I remember seeing this as a double bill with "That'll Be The Day", classiiiiic. I've bought the dvds now, so I can go down memory lane anytime I want.
Would anyone agree that the "star" of this movie, as portrayed by Dave Essex, is based on the late Brian Jones, founder of the Rolling Stones? Just a thought...
omg i love the film stardust!! i love david essex. !!!!
i watched 'that'll be the day' and 'stardust' for the first time the other day because my mum showed me. and now i have fallen inlove with david essex and the films are amazing :)
Does anyone know how I can buy a copy of this movie? I am trying to obtain a copy for my sister for Xmas. There doesn't seem to be anything here in the U.S. that I know of. Please help. Thank you.
@greekster10 Hi Greekster. I just spotted your request about the Stardust movie starring David Essex. If you go onto Amazon or play.com you can pick up both That'll Be The Day & Stardust as a set but I don't think they were ever released in the US format so if you bought them you would have to get them adapted from the European PAL system to the US format. Worth the extra though hon. Both films are amazing! Julie xxx
@MontagTheMagician possibly, but, this is 2 films (that ll be the day and stardust)that any muso from the early 60s can relate to.we all had a talentless singer who pulled the birds, while we struggled with the gear at the time to make good music
If anyone's interested, there were also novelisations of the two films, both by Ray Coleman. Second-hand bookshops might still have a few copies lying around.
Rather oddly, That'll Be The Day is told in the first person by Jim McLaine, while Stardust is a third-person narrative that for much of the time makes Mike Menarry (Adam Faith's character) the central figure.
The film was Stardust. The album was awesome. The movie was streets ahead of other rock musicals of its time. See the clip from That'll Be The Day with Ringo playing David's manager. God this brings back memories.
Great film - indeed the best rock film ever seen. David Essex is terrific - he really can act, and he is always highly watchable and even sympathetic - even though he's a bit of a bastard. Adam Faith is also excellent. AF and DE's scenes together in the movie are top-notch. Also highly recommended: THAT'LL BE THE DAY, the "Prequel", with DE as a younger Jim, and Ringo Starr acquitting himself very well as a younger Mike. Two British classics. Brilliant.
I'm trying to find this movie. Blockbuster, Hollywood, eBay, nor amazon has it. Can anyone tell me where I can order it? We get That'll Be The Day on the tele, but not this one. Would love to see the sequel. Peace, Carlie
They have this dvd on Amazon - its a double bill of the 2 films - new or used (I've just ordered my second copy - worn the first one out!!). If you loved the first you will certainly love the second! Enjoy, peace & love, Sandy
Oh i love this film so much but the only thing that spoils it for me is the rediculous wigs they put on David as they years are supposed to be going by and he is getting older, they look like the sort of thing you would get out of a cheep Christmas cracker
Your video clip is great and I've rated it as awesome. Please check out mine on some trading cards of 1960's chart topping stars: Elvis Presley, Adam Faith, Cliff Richard, Billy Furry, Frank Sinatra, Lonnie Donegan, and Shirley Bassey.
that'll be the day is availble on vhs us version but hard to find. request a search for it like I did. Somebody should make that'll and stardust a double dvd...
I saw this in 1974 as a 12 year old on the cinema when it was all the rage. It was an AA in UK which meant you were supposed to be 14. I was with an older cousin. The lady asked...is he 14? He said, 'Him? Yes.' I breathed a huge sigh of relief as I made it in. Then boasted about it as school on Monday. Great film at the time to see as a teenager.
I think the backing band is most of Brinsley Schwarz. The one with the beard is Ian Gomm. The tracks 'Let it be me' (apparently being sung by David Essex) and 'Shot of rhythm and blues' are on Dave Edmunds' album 'Subtle As A Flying Mallet'. As is a version of 'Da Doo Ron Ron', probably with DE singing over the backing used at the start of this clip. If I recall correctly, the band with Lowe in it might have been called The Electricians.
I think, along with Nick Lowe, it's Ian Gomm on guitar and Terry Williams on drums! Not sure about the sax...Cheers

How ironic that it's Dave Edmunds (and Nick Lowe) singing the tracks, but Dave is stuck in the back doing backup guitar. He was adorable!

No, at 0.6 seconds into the video centre stage is Nick Lowe playing bass for the girl singers. Essex plays bass with his band later on.

I've still got my copy of the double-LP soundtrack to this movie - and yes, Da Doo Ron Ron is on it, credited to Dave Edmunds and the Electricians.
