Hahaha it looks like you started getting lazy after about 3 inches of backcombing, the beginning looks tight the rest was kinda of meh, but great tutorial
i did get a little lazy. ^^ the reason being that this hair was super slick, and didn't wanna knot up well. while i'm sure that that's what you want in weaves, hair extentions, etc, (who wants to pay big bucks for frizzies?) it made the backcombing a bit of a pain. this video is edited, the full video is actually over 10 minutes long, and full of cussing. @TLRoss75 I had to cut them out after a month (they were looking pretty good about then) cus I had to do an intensive job hunt, shit sucked =/ Im gonna start growing my hair out again and try again though once I start uni again.
@seattle0sound ohh that does suck! I can see me doing that after awhile because I'm not patient enough to comb them out, though I've seen it done. Good luck!
I have really long thick wavy/curly hair and im trying to get dreads, how long do you think it would take approx for dreads to come in, assuming I use residue free shampoo and backcome my hair everyday?
I started my dreads this way. It is labor intensive however it is all worth it. As a black woman it is the best method to do. 5+ years later they are long and strong. All ethnic groups can do this. :-)
Omg... thanks for the vid. I was worried about using wax to start my dreads, and I saw your vid. My dreads look awesome. And no...people. Backcombing does not hurt.
@cikanine The reason for the metal comb is that it is stronger. Vigorous backcombing will eventually break a plastic comb. It can still be done, but you'll probably need more than one comb :)
ok so i want to get dreads, but i only want a few behind my ears(2 or 3 behind each),and well i think ill have to do them on myself after i do them how long should i wait to wash them. i know ill have to take care of them a bit more because not all of my hair will be dreaded, but how would that work? what do u think?
@greentape44 okay so dreads are supposed to be washed. keep them clean! its a common misconception and when i had them back in 5th grade people kept commenting on how dirty my hair must've been. they were wrong and you shouldn't make that same mistake. but as for the surrounding hair, i think it could get jumbled up in your dreads but a couple behind the ears would look kinda cool :D good luck!
@12ilovesky like half the length, it shortens quite a bit, which is why im giving it like another 6 months before i start to get dreads, my fringe is only halfway down my nose at the moment
I had to look up "pomb" to see if it's an actual tree....all i found out is that it's a slang term for vagina. Sooo, it'll look like a vagina tree? im thinking about getting dreads soon. the thing is, i completly shaved my head in january. long story. but i havent cut it since, and i was wondering how long i might have to wait to get my hair long enough to do this. if it matters, i got thickish wavy brown hair

I'm white but I've got pretty curly hair, sort of like Bobby Ellworth's (from Overkill) or I guess Kirk Hammet (from Metallica) or Serj Tankian. Would my lock up pretty fast? How and how often can I wash it?
Are you suppose to let some hair go as your backcombing, like let some go threw your fingers, instead of just holding tight onto the hair and not letting any get away and backcombing.
Maybe I'm too stupid to do this, but in the end when I twist my synth fluff, I tend to have tiny loops everywhere on the sides... How can I avoid them?
My curly self and most "white" people I know with straighter hair have to comb with fingers or something everyday or we get these things called knots which, in my case, try their darnedest to turn in to lovely tubes that look an awful lot like dreads. If human hair didn't knot and tangle, beauty supply stores would be out of business and detangling sprays wouldn't have been invented. Peace. ^_^
ppl whats childish about this Question I asked him
Question how would a white person start locks from a hair length of 3 inches or longer, i mean lets get scientific...straight follicle hair grows and grows straight FACT!....the roots of your stratum base follicle grows straight too FACT!.... where in this trying to dread your hair does it lock??? please explain scientificly if your hollow head is capable of this...
dude its natural for any style of hair to lock if neglected. obviously now there are more efficient and clean ways of doing it, but no matter what race, it works.
Can you provide facts to support your lint idea? I'd love to see your scientific facts for this. I await your reply with great gusto.
Personally I think its something you heard or something you made up. Yes lint and other fibres can help but its not the primary thing to generate locks.
you want me to answer your Questions and you never answered my first one. use your brain pinky. LuLz!!....., just keep doing what major of every other white person does and make your dreads, thats how I know dreadlocks arent keen(natural) to white ppl b-cuz 98% of ya either had to backcomb, croche hook needle threw locks, tie in knotts to get locks , and if ya so called claim to go natural you had to alter it at the first stage of growing, and if ya went natural it doest look locked & its not.
Amongst or your LuLz and other nonesense I cannot see a single question short of "Who said the hairstyle was limited to black people". No hair style is limited to any single race. If you would care to re-itterate your question without childish words I will gladly entertain them with an intelligent answer.
yea its obvious i made you look stupid and you lost this one.... now your just being rambunctious. and since you have no answer for your redemption you have to say you can't understand me b-cuz I type "LuLz" and other minor slang words U dumb ass LuLz but if u didnt understand me why did you respond and reply to comment that wasnt ment 4 U. your making yourself look stupid by trying to play spell check when YOU SPELLED RE-ITTERATE WRONG! LuLz.. your doing all thys to change the topic. U lossed
This isnt a spelling test. And again with the losing stuff. I'm bored of this now. Its been all day and you won't even speak a regular for of English, instead you speak spastic so I'm just going to ignore whatever you say. I'm tryiing to give you the information you asked for and I asked civilly so I will assume you are too immature for anything like an intelligent conversation. Good day sir
Like I said, black people (and asian people, indian people, any people who lock up) rarely start their dreads naturally. Most of the black people I know start off with twists, which take several months to turn into actual dreads. So, what's the difference?
like i said you respond with all emotions and no scientific facts, you couldnt answer my question ....... i win.... now respond to me again crying .. waaaaaa waaaaaa LuLz...
look ignore my first comment b-cuz I am a asshole but i do believe anybody can have locks its just that you ppl have little or no knowledge about locks, why?? b-cuz ya still call locks "dreadlocks", 2) ya dreadlock history only goes back to rastafari when that rasta movement came from ethiopia and beyond (Haile Selassie), YOU LACK THE POWER OF WHAT LOCKS ARE AND THE KINETIC VALUE OF IT.
i agree that we should come up with a new term, because there is nothing at all "dread" about my hair. I'm all for simply calling them locks, and most of the time I do. but the fact is, dreadlock is easily recognizable, and alot of people use it.
Now you know nothing about me, you have no idea what I've been though in life, and you have no clue what MY locks mean to ME. But yet you assume much, based on nothing more than my skin color. youre no different than any other racist out there.
haha wat a bunch of loser trying to be black , making their hair look black and coilly back combing it giving it a afroish look, then ya turn around and say ya not copying black ppl hair styles, NOW SINCE WHAT I'M SAYING IS TRUE THUMB ME DOWN AND GIVE ME NEGATIVE COMMENTS.
While the style we know as "dreadlocks" is significant to many black cultures, it is in no way limited to only black people. Non-Black people have been wearing their hair this way for THOUSANDS of years, long before rastafari, baye fall or any other modern day black movements. This Isn't to say that black people didn't were locks long ago as well, only that it was not limited to only black people. you are welcome to continue spewing your ignorance if you like, but it doesn't make you right.
who said the hairstyle was limited to black ppl ???. the fact remains that whyte ppl cannot get locks you have to make them technically you never can have locks b-cuz with whyte ppl locks you can put fingers, crochet needles, ect threw them. real black locked locks u cant do that atleast not with my locks, and whyte ppl do just for the hairstyle there nothing spiritual with it with ya, why because its not in your culture, but technically it is because black culture is where u come from anyways
"who said the hairstyle was limited to black ppl" You implied it by stating white folks are "trying to be black." Your words, not mine. And secondly, backcombing is only one way of achieving locks, White hair (as well as other hair) will lock up on its own if just given time and patience. In fact, I don't know many black person who have "natural" locks anyway, most have to pay a loctician to twist it and fill it with gunk, and dont do it for spiritual reasons. Your argument here is worthless.
When you don't comb your hair and it gets knotty...THATS WHAT DREADLOCKS ARE. Its the simple process of the hair follicles locking together, multiply this over 2 or 3 years and you WILL get locks. Crossing cultures makes things interesting. Hell even rock and roll has its roots in African slavery and now Americans churn it out by the bucketload and it makes them feel 'American' . Expand your insight and you will look more intelligent. Shame people still have the same view as yours but heyho.....
Question how would a white person start locks from a hair length of 3 inches or longer, i mean lets get scientific...straight follicle hair grows and grows straight FACT!....the roots of your stratum base follicle grows straight too FACT!.... where in this trying to dread your hair does it lock??? please explain scientificly if your hollow head is capable of this...
nobody owes you any explanation. I'm positive that even if you're provided with the facts you'd still come back bitching. I mean, ALL you'd have to do is visit the site and you'd find MANY white people who started their locks all naturally. If white people don't brush their hair, can your genius mind guess what happens? It starts locking up! But you'd rather just be pissed off than bother taking the time to see the truth. Better to brush off that hate you carry before it's eats away at you...
Lol should probably learn more about yourself if your doing it for yourself because you spelt dread wrong. Just admit your wanna look like your friends
Nobody's trying to look black, my Celtic ancestors were known for having "hair like snakes" back before Christ. Also lots of Indian holy men called Sadhus wore them, and still do today. So yeah.
very nice! wanna get dreads too for a long time but i dont know how to do it with my hair i dont have the same style hair as that piece of hair i have a sort of afro and those dreads look bushy is that good or will it goo away
im gonna back comb it like in this video, but im also gonna twist it while backcombing and palm roll while backcombing. Like twist it, backcomb, palm roll, back comb, all in same locations to get it rly tight and tangled :)
I don't know anyone who's damaged their hair due to backcombing, and we have an entire website full of people who have backcombed to start dreads. Maybe if they backcombed really really tight (so tight you pull your hair out, but why would you do that?), or if they attempted to backcomb repeatedly (some people think you need to, but you don't!)...but I don't know of anyone who has had a problem with it so far.
This can damage your hair, but most can handle it :)
At least it's good that you don't use wax! Im planning on getting ma hair backcombed soon, but my hair is only 4" now, and maybe like 5 - 6 inch when im getting backcombed, isn't it harder to do with shorter hair? I got caucassian / curly hair. Slightly afro sometime :P
mines kinda the same. atm mines like 5 and a half inches maybe? idk i dont have a method to measure it atm :P but im planning to get mine done over Spring Break. im only worried about my dreads shrinkin up too much after theyve locked up :(
backcombing short hair is a bit of a hassle. You could always go the patience method (what some call "neglect" but I feel that term is wrong) and by the time your hair is long enough to backcomb, you could have some nicely forming locks.
Wispy ends are beautiful...I wish I had more. If you want wispy loose ends, then yeah, just these those last strands alone. And make sure you come by our forum with pics, because i would LOVE to see it!!
I'm sure alot of people think they could "dred" better...but you don't have to...that's MY point. you can make them super tight and have them sticking out at all angles, but it hurts more like that...and the end results are EXACTLY the same no matter how tight you backcomb, so there's no reason to go through the the extra pointless trouble. and I'm speaking from experience.
Actually, palmrolling doesn't seem to help much with the dreads at all. But after you backcomb, it will make all those little stray hairs not stick out quite as much. That's all I did it for, just to lessen the fuzz. :)
glad my hair locs all on its own just like JAH intended. PEACE

Waxed dreads are bad dreads.
Backcombing + palm rolling makes great dreads on their own, but the dread product companies want you to buy their stuff, without revealing the dangers of what wax can do to your hair -_-
DagGirl 2 years ago
its not really a danger.
theres no danger using wax
its just that with wax it doesnt really knot quickly
it could take a year or more
AND using wax is NASTY thats the main reason people dont use it.
after u got ur dreads and its locked the locks have chunks of wax in it that can collect dirt and shit.
its not really a danger just nasty.

what do backcombed dreads look like after there done any pics
manhattenproject09er 2 years ago
I'm white but I've got pretty curly hair, sort of like Bobby Ellworth's (from Overkill) or I guess Kirk Hammet (from Metallica) or Serj Tankian. Would my lock up pretty fast? How and how often can I wash it?
Metallicazack 2 years ago
Are you suppose to let some hair go as your backcombing, like let some go threw your fingers, instead of just holding tight onto the hair and not letting any get away and backcombing.
Thanks!
BrucesReptiles 2 years ago
I think Twist&Rip would simplify the whole concept of "making" locks, and it doesn't involve any tools except hands and enough length of hair. :-)
eyeheartchrist 2 years ago
Maybe I'm too stupid to do this, but in the end when I twist my synth fluff, I tend to have tiny loops everywhere on the sides... How can I avoid them?

You'll lose about 1/3 of your hair length.

is a flee comb like a comb for animals could u probally get them at wal mart??
BadmanRecords 2 years ago

(my point exactly dummy) made U look stupid again
41fevaoaklandyada 2 years ago
dude its natural for any style of hair to lock if neglected. obviously now there are more efficient and clean ways of doing it, but no matter what race, it works.
SonnyBean4 2 years ago 2
Can you provide facts to support your lint idea? I'd love to see your scientific facts for this. I await your reply with great gusto.
Personally I think its something you heard or something you made up. Yes lint and other fibres can help but its not the primary thing to generate locks.
ShadowEater120880 2 years ago
you want me to answer your Questions and you never answered my first one. use your brain pinky.
41fevaoaklandyada 2 years ago
Amongst or your LuLz and other nonesense I cannot see a single question short of "Who said the hairstyle was limited to black people". No hair style is limited to any single race. If you would care to re-itterate your question without childish words I will gladly entertain them with an intelligent answer.
ShadowEater120880 2 years ago
yea its obvious i made you look stupid and you lost this one.... now your just being rambunctious. and since you have no answer for your redemption you have to say you can't understand me b-cuz I type "LuLz" and other minor slang words U dumb ass LuLz but if u didnt understand me why did you respond and reply to comment that wasnt ment 4 U. your making yourself look stupid by trying to play spell check when YOU SPELLED RE-ITTERATE WRONG! LuLz.. your doing all thys to change the topic. U lossed
41fevaoaklandyada 2 years ago
This isnt a spelling test. And again with the losing stuff. I'm bored of this now. Its been all day and you won't even speak a regular for of English, instead you speak spastic so I'm just going to ignore whatever you say. I'm tryiing to give you the information you asked for and I asked civilly so I will assume you are too immature for anything like an intelligent conversation. Good day sir
ShadowEater120880 2 years ago 2
Like I said, black people (and asian people, indian people, any people who lock up) rarely start their dreads naturally. Most of the black people I know start off with twists, which take several months to turn into actual dreads. So, what's the difference?
ladyjeebus 2 years ago
I think you need to look at the structure of hair and how conditioners (especially the ones containing silicone) do to the hair.
Incidentally all this "lulz" "b-cuz" stuff makes you sound really immature.
ShadowEater120880 2 years ago
like i said you respond with all emotions and no scientific facts, you couldnt answer my question ....... i win.... now respond to me again crying .. waaaaaa waaaaaa LuLz...

some hair styles are just...eh..
hypermetalsonic 2 years ago
Each to their own eh. Makes the word an interesting place :D
ShadowEater120880 2 years ago 2
look ignore my first comment b-cuz I am a asshole but i do believe anybody can have locks its just that you ppl have little or no knowledge about locks, why?? b-cuz ya still call locks "dreadlocks", 2) ya dreadlock history only goes back to rastafari when that rasta movement came from ethiopia and beyond (Haile Selassie), YOU LACK THE POWER OF WHAT LOCKS ARE AND THE KINETIC VALUE OF IT.
41fevaoaklandyada 2 years ago
i agree that we should come up with a new term, because there is nothing at all "dread" about my hair.

41fevaoaklandyada 2 years ago
While the style we know as "dreadlocks" is significant to many black cultures, it is in no way limited to only black people. Non-Black people have been wearing their hair this way for THOUSANDS of years, long before rastafari, baye fall or any other modern day black movements. This Isn't to say that black people didn't were locks long ago as well, only that it was not limited to only black people. you are welcome to continue spewing your ignorance if you like, but it doesn't make you right.
ladyjeebus 2 years ago
who said the hairstyle was limited to black ppl ???. the fact remains that whyte ppl cannot get locks you have to make them technically you never can have locks b-cuz with whyte ppl locks you can put fingers, crochet needles, ect threw them. real black locked locks u cant do that atleast not with my locks, and whyte ppl do just for the hairstyle there nothing spiritual with it with ya, why because its not in your culture, but technically it is because black culture is where u come from anyways
41fevaoaklandyada 2 years ago
"who said the hairstyle was limited to black ppl" You implied it by stating white folks are "trying to be black." Your words, not mine. And secondly, backcombing is only one way of achieving locks, White hair (as well as other hair) will lock up on its own if just given time and patience. In fact, I don't know many black person who have "natural" locks anyway, most have to pay a loctician to twist it and fill it with gunk, and dont do it for spiritual reasons. Your argument here is worthless.
ladyjeebus 2 years ago
When you don't comb your hair and it gets knotty...THATS WHAT DREADLOCKS ARE. Its the simple process of the hair follicles locking together, multiply this over 2 or 3 years and you WILL get locks. Crossing cultures makes things interesting. Hell even rock and roll has its roots in African slavery and now Americans churn it out by the bucketload and it makes them feel 'American' . Expand your insight and you will look more intelligent. Shame people still have the same view as yours but heyho.....

nobody owes you any explanation.

Nobody's trying to look black, my Celtic ancestors were known for having "hair like snakes" back before Christ. Also lots of Indian holy men called Sadhus wore them, and still do today. So yeah.

LOL, India is where it originated, not from africa.

WRONG. They said one of the earliest man with locks is from India. That doesnt mean they originated in India. Nappy hair is universal.

hey, want to get dreds soon, i didnt see palm rolling in the vid.
dont you reccomend it?
also wondered how they would look just palm rolling without twisting and ripping and any other method?
Thanks in advance
g51281 3 years ago
im gonna back comb it like in this video, but im also gonna twist it while backcombing and palm roll while backcombing. Like twist it, backcomb, palm roll, back comb, all in same locations to get it rly tight and tangled :)
MYsketchedFANTASY 3 years ago
I don't know anyone who's damaged their hair due to backcombing, and we have an entire website full of people who have backcombed to start dreads. Maybe if they backcombed really really tight (so tight you pull your hair out, but why would you do that?), or if they attempted to backcomb repeatedly (some people think you need to, but you don't!)...but I don't know of anyone who has had a problem with it so far.
ladyjeebus 3 years ago
This can damage your hair, but most can handle it :)
At least it's good that you don't use wax! Im planning on getting ma hair backcombed soon, but my hair is only 4" now, and maybe like 5 - 6 inch when im getting backcombed, isn't it harder to do with shorter hair? I got caucassian / curly hair. Slightly afro sometime :P
jonaso0601 3 years ago
mines kinda the same. atm mines like 5 and a half inches maybe? idk i dont have a method to measure it atm :P but im planning to get mine done over Spring Break. im only worried about my dreads shrinkin up too much after theyve locked up :(
MYsketchedFANTASY 3 years ago
backcombing short hair is a bit of a hassle. You could always go the patience method (what some call "neglect" but I feel that term is wrong) and by the time your hair is long enough to backcomb, you could have some nicely forming locks.

vid kind of sucked mang...i can dred a lot nicer than that. when you backcomb you have to start from the base more
streetsk8r609 3 years ago
I'm sure alot of people think they could "dred" better...but you don't have to...that's MY point. you can make them super tight and have them sticking out at all angles, but it hurts more like that...and the end results are EXACTLY the same no matter how tight you backcomb, so there's no reason to go through the the extra pointless trouble. and I'm speaking from experience.
ladyjeebus 3 years ago
thanks so much!
upgrademenyu 3 years ago
Quick question. After you go through that process, palmrolling is a good idea just to finish it up, right?
musicnspeed 3 years ago
Actually, palmrolling doesn't seem to help much with the dreads at all. But after you backcomb, it will make all those little stray hairs not stick out quite as much. That's all I did it for, just to lessen the fuzz. :)
