  • What's a neck reset?

  • Who cares about quarters? The action is high so adjust it. This video is a bunch of complaining.

  • $1200 is crazy money for a guitar that needs a complete overhaul. Easy decision though, you spend the $400 and get it done. It's a beautiful instrument overall.

  • "Ripped off?" It's 40 years old and needs a neck reset. That's standard luthier stuff. I would not trust this "expert" with my guitar for the work though.

  • Hey Davey,

I recently bought a fender jazzmaster classic player off ebay and ive noticed that one of the saddle screws is missing, so the saddle is only held in place by the string itsself and is buzzing like a bitch. Any ideas where to get these little screws? Im annoyed as the guy said it was in 'perfect condition'

    Cheers!

  • @SnappingTurtle90

    all parts

    parts are parts

    stewmac

    fender

  • Shove it in a humidity case for about a month. That might take care of the warping and the neck.

You don't mention where he bought the guitar location-wise. If it was up north, then it no doubt has been dry for a long time. I use humidifiers on all my acoustics from Nov-Apr.

  • First he got ripped off, and then it is "not bad".

  • Hey Dave....have you seen the Evertune bridge? Got any thoughts on it?

  • @baman0410

    i'll have a look :)

  • you are a chode

  • @MasterTomatoes

    Thanks for the support !!!

  • I know nothing in regards to guitar building\fixing but couldn't you shim the bridge to compensate for the action? My action is really high and am hoping to shim the bridge, is there something I should know about the neck?

  • I'd demand my money back and if I couldn't get money back I'd definitely give a seriously bad review to the knucklehead who sold me a damaged piece of crap excuse for a good guitar

  • where in canada do you live? im in NB...

  • Play it for us.

  • "I just feel so terrible for The Dude."

    He he.

  • I have the same guitar! But mine is actually real haha Dad had it from the 70's

  • ok, it's a nice guild. as usual with guild's you need to sand the bridge down to get the strings lower. it has a nice top.

  • This guy's a fruitcake...

  • @69schil

Then why did you watch and take time time to comment

  • @davey4557 Because I like fruitcakes...

  • @davey4557 because fruits cakes evoke a stong reaction.

  • another fuckwit...

  • @MrHopgoblin

another arsehole that hides behind Channel not available?

  • @mattachu26 it's crap the strings are shit so i got new string and it's still shit

But who cares it's only 30$

you live and learn right :D

  • Great info.. Thanks..

  • That looks pretty good compared to the guitar i bought off ebay...at least yours is a full size....seriously check out my video.....ebay scam ripped off by a midgets...that sucker took me in good and proper

  • i just ordered a 30$ guitar off e-bay and boy do i have a bad feeling about it

  • @yubasa1992 let us know what happens

  • Davey buy one of these I did. Cost me $400 US. Sounds like $4000 US. First I asked How can they sell so cheap. Then I realized, How can Gibson ask $5k for a hundred bux worth the wood! product (DOT) madeinchina (dot ) com/2011-200-ACOUSTIC-ELECTRIC-GUITAR-OF-MAPLE-VENEER_13340018 (DOT) shtml . replace the (dots)

  • There's a type of novice guitar buyer that thinks any old thing made in the 70s that's been left next to a radiator for 30 years is a 'vintage investment' and will pay well over the odds for complete junk.

  • Never buy sight unseen, you are just asking for the prod................

  • Why can't people figure out that this guy repairs guitars. He didn't buy it himself!

  • @MCinSquare

most are fuked in the head?

  • @MCinSquare i would never take my guitar to this guy, he obviously doesnt know crap about guitars.

  • @MCinSquare i would never take my guitar to this guy, he obviously doesnt know crap about guitars.

  • @rwbrdms1

What makes you so high mighty and knowledgeable ?

Please show us your guitar repair videos, so we can see how much you know :)

    Thanks for the support !!!

    Cheers !!!

  • @davey4557 Well, your making a huge deal out of how high the action is. If its too high, then adjust it! simple. but you rant and rant about normal things that happen as a guitar ages. theres a truss rod, they make new nuts and saddles every day. its like if it was a flat tire, youd take 2 hours to talk about it when you should just fix it.

  • @rwbrdms1 yes boss i'll get right back to work boss I do this for fun boss it's like TV only more fake sorry if the drama got to you next week i'll display my acting range by playing the role of someone who actually gives a shit lighten up it's a gag a joke :) Cheers !! sorry it made ya comment
  • @rwbrdms1 I agree with you. this is silly...

  • @racingtulip thanks!

  • @MCinSquare lmfao i was thinking the same thing!

  • We have a saying in England. All the gear - no idea. A gifted amateur - getting better I'm sure. You still have a lot to learn.

  • go to a guitar store and try out the instrument you like to buy, sometimes you find guitars much cheaper then some "high end" and they sound even better, and going to a guitar store is like you are going to a candy shop ;)

  • The buyer's luck is already bad enough. And then you're going to "FIX" it for him?? LOLOLOLOL

  • Most all Guilds are like that. Funny I say Guild to some people and the first thing they say is "high action".

  • What do I need to do to my guitar if I get a dead noise on the last fret? It doesn't matter how hard I push it down, it just wont make a noise. Someone told me something about fret leveling?

  • Is there any way to successfully relieve the "belly-up" in the body? It seems that if you have to reset and shim the neck, that you're chasing the actual problem, the fact that the bridge is acting like it's on an elevator, and is rising away from the neck!! Don't know if there's a way to slowly clamp down with pressure to get the body flat, and/or get it to stay, but it almost seems like this would make more sense if it's possible or practical.

  • @mageedis

    no :(

I am looking at it for the guy who bought it.

    I'm the bass player

  • the jack on the back says barcus-berry..thats probably a barcus-berry soundboard transducer inside, they are top of the line for that sorta thing...i would'nt of gave 1200 for it,but he's in chest deep...so he might as well fix it..till he's up to his neck, its a vintage guild...so it might be worth it...he's got nothin to lose now,but 3 or 4 hundred more, and then he might be able to say "this old GUILD is the shit!!...i love it!...old guitars are the best

  • that guitar is not worth 1200 in mint condition. Only a fool would pay that. It's like one of the lower end models offered by Guild at that time.

  • I respectfully recommend you rethink comparing someone's physical ill-health to someone who overpaid about $750 for a guitar. Bad physical health is sometimes irreversible and can negatively affect an entire family. All that guitar buyer did was overpay for an inanimate piece of disposable merchandise. It's a guitar, not a living human being. Just sayin.

  • @93or97 That's not the point.. The point is that he feels bad that he has to tell someone bad news.. Which is what a doctor would feel if he had to tell someone that their family member isn't doing well... And by the way, he paid $1200 for it.

  • @xKtulu An MD is qualified to describe what its like to give bad health news to a relative of a sick person. A non-MD is unqualified for said purpose (presumably you and the author are not MDs). How seriously to you take the description of resetting a guitar neck by someone with no such experience?

What is inaccurate about writing the buyer "overpaid...$750"?

  • @93or97 You're missing the point you idiot. The point is that he doesn't want to break the bad news to someone.

  • i have that same guitar less than 3 ft beside me

  • you seem to get ripped off a lot. Stewmac did it to you and now ebay stuff. no offense but i guess buying online isn't your area lol

  • @sirgreggins8824

    not me

the goofs that bring these to me for help got burned

  • lol my friend wants to buy a guitar on ebay.... i told him "good luck"

  • Problem is the person who sold it might not even have known there was a problem? Then again could be someone dumping it down onto the first unfortunate sucker with some money and looking fo an vintage Guild? Hard to say.

  • At the least tell me he trashed that guy's account with bad feedback. I would have had to have some kind of return or GREAT price. Thats why I buy on e-bay is for a deal and would NEVER buy an acoustic on e-bay especially used. I bought a Parker Nitefly Mojo in beautiful blue burst on e-bay, sold in stores at $2,899. It had a terrible setup on it as far as super high action with the truss rod too tight, (prob why the action was high, to counter the buzz). WONDERFUL GUITAR once setup, $1100.

  • @willeng84

    sweet !!!

  • Davey, I like you brother. Your a really good guy and a hell of a guitar tech. The first few video's I saw I was weary of some of the things I saw but in reality I started watching videos of you working on guitars you didn't really know like the parkers. After watching more of your videos I came to see that you really know what your talking about and are willing to help fellow guitarist, I set up all my friends and relatives instruments because I love it. Love the vids man.

  • Did the guy fix it

  • @KreatorOfDeath1985

    it is dead

no repair for a twisted neck :(

  • @davey4557

At least he can use it as what ever he wants now, a hammer, a table, a hat, a bird, an airplane....firewood.

  • @davey4557

Dont you takeit off sand the finish off, steam it for a bit then clamp it down straight?

  • @KreatorOfDeath1985

    twisted is twisted

    it's a goner

  • @davey4557

    Hammers can fix anything..........

  • 'Vintage' guitars are often WAY overpriced on eBay for what they are - especially ones from years everyone knows the big names churned out some lemons.

  • I got a stinking guitar on ebay and it stinks!

  • Did not watch the video but there are a lot of comments from people who seem to know nothing. Old Guilds are well worth repairing. All guitars will need a neck reset sooner or later. There is also a delicate balance setting action, saddle, nut, neck little by little on each part. Shaving a saddle is a stop-gap. Martin guitars have some mystique but they made crap in the 1970's. Forget Taylor. Learn about building guitars then comment.

  • when you buy a guitar on ebal you roll the dice and take your chances

  • i've had some success shaving down the bridge itself to get the saddle lower. any thoughts on why this is no good? i promise i am not going to try and insult your answer. i just respect your opinion.

  • @me86680

some bridge plates are too thin too shave :)

    otherwise ya

    go for it

  • @me86680 It can affect the intonation. When the neck angles upward over time, the notes begin to play sharp. Shaving the bridge will lower the action but the notes do not stay in tune when played up the neck.

  • @me86680 guilds tend to have nice thick bridges. I think you could shave it down

  • i'll give you a £1 for it.

  • that's a $400 or $500 Tops!...I wouldnt even fix it..There's one on craigslist for$150 Sucker!

  • @scottschmitt1

    like I said

    ripped off on ebay

  • I have had a number of poor quality purchases on ebay, (and a lot of good ones) although perhaps nothing this bad. In one case I was away and was only able to verify that the guitar arrived. It was too late to leave bad feedback when I saw what the **** had sent

  • It's mahogany.

  • Davey, have you learned yet that flat-top guitars really aren't flat? Go watch Taylor's video on humidity, Bob Taylor talks about arches in guitars, what you're seeing doesn't appear to be belly-up, it looks like it's just properly humidified, at least right there anyway! In all these older videos with dreadnoughts like this one you're always saying it's belly-up, but if it's how I'm seeing it in the video, it's not.

  • How many quarters SHOULD fit under the twelfth fret? I wish I could fnd some to teach me Luthiery.

  • It might be set up for slide :P

  • I think your funnier than hell,I have been watching your clips most of the morning, keep posting,I will help you with the haters,J

  • Hello Dave .. I have a question .. I have a sweet '70's era Guild D-35 for twenty plus years now ... just this last week I was really doing heavy strumming ... and lo and behold ... I was hitting in front of the pick guard and I did a Willie Nelson number on the surface in a two inch diameter area ... the finish is gone .. I can see bare wood now .. any tips on what I can do .. or should do .. about it ? What a shame I got careless after all these years ..

  • @funguy4utube

the open grain will dry out the top over time

get it looked at and at least retouched to seal the open wood

  • @davey4557 thanks for the advice ... and so fast too .. nice !!!

  • before you call this man mad, you shouod check out his other videos, i'd say this man knows what the hell hes doing and talking about and as far as e-bay?? i wouldn't buy a jar of pickles from them

  • its heartbreaking when your ebay purchase turns out to be a lemon, im sure some sellers set the action really high trying to cover up a warped neck, i had same problem with a lag arkane electric but i only paid £90 for it. i was considering sanding fretboard back slightly and refretting as i am poor, any thaughts?

  • Really, its not your spelling. Just your lack of knowledge and lame sense of humor!

  • @stive828

    ya well smell ya later

    thanks for the support :)

  • @stive828

please MR knowledge tell me what you know?

  • How long have you been working on guitars? Take a minute to review your tonewoods...Do you know what a tonewood is? Have another beer - it clearly has a solid mahogany back and sides, not rosewood.

  • @stive828

    ahh fuk you

oh sorry did I type that :(

my brain said one thing my mouth said another

    sorry :(

please point out all things wrong

you can be my quality control spell check monkey :)

  • @stive828 you're right

  • @stive828 that is definitely not mahogany

  • @jw2113 The Guild D 35 IS a mahogany guitar the only rosewood on that guitar is the fret board and the bridge

  • Comment removed

  • It's not worth fixing. If it was a vintage Martin I'd fix it.

  • I've bought 2 guitars off ebay and I was lucky! One arrived in a black bin liner ffs the postie said they had second thoughts about delivering it! It was great, bless you Royal Mail! The other was in a very neglected state and took me a week to sort out it was borderline send back time. So be warned ebay is variable even when they treat sellers harshly. Pity my poor Brother in Law though he bought a Gibson...it never came at all!!!

  • I was under the illiusion the neck is checked by using a straight edge and measuring the gao between the level and the fret board on about the between 7th and 12th fret,I pmaybewrong though

  • @rhysvw

    I can tell be EYE

you can use a straight edge, that may not show you its twisted :)

a neck can be straight and also twisted like a propeller at the same time

  • @rhysvw your right, this guys a nut?? a neck reset? the guys mad, i wouldnt trust this dick to tie my laces let a lone do a neck set!!!

  • The guy who sold it is a bullshit conman asshole. Snake in the grass, not even a snake in the grass, he's the snake SHIT in the grass.

Anyway, your neck reset cost is a bit cheaper than the one I paid for. It cost me

$700 for the reset, guy did a great job, I paid $400 for the Guild D25M, so I least I knew what I getting into.

  • The guy who sold it is an bullshit conman crook asshole. Fuck ebay

  • Couldn't you pull the saddle off and remove some material off the bottom of it instead of a neck re-set?

  • :D ....OMG...I feel sooo bad watching this...drama...your escapades...I meen how do you tell someone that his or her precious is no good....I meen...AT ALL !!!

I realy enjoy your videos on "..neck resets.."

    Cheers...

    Johnnie auf Schweden

  • @VonDreadnought

Thanks for the support and the comment

  • F*ck e-bay!!!

  • i think thar would be a strap bolt

  • I believe that D-35 NT is Mahogany, I have the same guitar 86 model and it is mahogany back and sides. spruce top.

  • you forgot to tell em about the old ground down bridge to lower the action trick

  • How much do you chardge for a neck reset? How much do you charge to glue a loose bridge?

  • @burntvalve86

neck reset can be from $500 to $1000 depending on the guitar and how well it comes apart

bridge reglue is usually about $90

  • @davey4557 ...that my friend is why i learned to do all my own work

  • You are hilarious!

  • @sparks158

    Thanks

    and Cheers !!!

  • I feel you pain for the sucker.

Also, don't buy a pawn shop acoustic unless they let you remove the strings and make sure the underside of the bridge inside there isn't shattered.

  • Just got a crafter off ebay and the guy switched the strings for electric guitar ones and the truss rod needed adjusting, but I had that done and bought some .12s and it plays really nice. Bit sneaky of him really though, all the strings were buzzing badly before the truss rod was adjusted.

  • @MilitantBlackGuy1

ebay is like a roller coaster ride for consumer anxiety

like shit at the store ain't shitty enough

    LOL

  • Also, the lil epi Ive decided to go ahead and order in some sheilded wire proper guage. Im going to wait till that Gibson THree way shows up from GCenter or Muscians Friend and remove it all, disconnect it place it all back on a jig and wire it using the proper wire and parts. However, for all the screw up on this my first electric re-wire, it doesnt sound half bad in person.

  • The one Im talking about it was obvious that the neck was twisted it was that bad. It belonged to a frat brother and he thinks that it happened because he stuck it in storage missing three strings and rain got in and ruined it. But, it wasnt a much as Loss as that Guild. His was a cheaper model like a Ventura Jumbo I think.

  • Man, thats a shame. Only choice would be to purchase a new neck. Ive seen only one guitar with a twisted neck before and it was due to water damage in a storage bin. The rest of the guitar was in decent shape.

  • @Davesintexas

the poor thing was left for shit at some point

    too bad :(

  • Did the guy actually pay for the Reset? Ive just finished re doing all the electronics in my lil Epi Special. Spent just under $300 dollars to replace everything and add a second tone and volume and Duncann Pickups. Reason I did it was to attempt to prove that even the CRUMMIEST Guitar can sound good if properly supported. And once it plays, if it does and plays well, I might spring for Tuners etc.

  • @Davesintexas

The neck was twisted upon closer inspection

    the guitar is fuked

  • i got ripped of zakk wylde les paul for £310 BRAND NEW when i confirmed payment over paypal he had 100% good feedback 26 brilliant comments now i cant get hold of him its been 13 days since it "supposdly" got sent out but its bullshit now i need to see if i can get my money back as he gave me fake details

  • @greenday2k8

    Bummer

I hope you got paypal protection !!!

  • If you're going to buy a guitar, buy it from a music store.

  • Whats the quarter 12th fret trick?

  • @Lostsolider

no more than 1 quarter should fit between the 12th fret and the strings

  • You give alot of good info on your vids.

  • @steppenwood

Thanks Again for Looking and commenting

I'll keep making em if people keep watchin'

  • That guy who bought it will end up owning it and have to like it. I'm sure the person that sold it knew fully well he was selling a lemon with juicy tricks. Too bad cause the trick is that its vintage and has decent appearance.

Ebay risks. A friend of mine is a ebayoholic he said first check the sellers ratings and how much they've sold to validate if they have a history of good feedback for their deals.

  • what a shame to have such an instrument be toasted like that one is. if the neck is twisted as it looks from over the bridge its going to take a lot of work to make it right again but i have seen the Martin you resurrected and that was amazing to see afterward. Good luck if he decides to have you save what money he has otherwise waisted on it like it is... Cheers!!!

  • @NickedBlade

    it's a project guitar

too much work with no guarantee

the twisted neck is pretty much the kiss of death

  • @davey4557 Yeah, I agree with that but, it would be a shame to dump $1,200 into the fireplace. if he decides that have him get in contact with me because I would like to know if he has any more unwanted money to get rid of with out anything to show for it :) ...LOL!!!

  • @NickedBlade

He's gonna keep it like it is !!!

    LOL

    what else could you do?

  • @davey4557

Instead of resetting the neck, could you not just shave the bridge down?

  • @davey4557 Oops, just saw y our comment that the neck was twisted, that's a whole different ballgame. Disregard my last comment.

  • @LFWOL

Upon closer inspection the neck is just plain twisted. It's a goner !!!

  • @LFWOL

    I agree

It's a project guitar at best

  • If you use an Albanian quarter, it would be fine at the 12th fret. Seriously, a D35 is a great guitar. It's got a rich, loud sound!!! Guilds are my guitar of choice.

  • @BarneyFife00

It's a shame to see stuff get left for dead like this ...

  • i have a wood stove you can use to fix that P.O.S....lol

  • @squidskunk

    I have a fireplace

    LOL

  • The stupidity in me sometimes makes me tempted to buy a guitar on ebay w/out trying it. And then my wisdom calls me a dumb ass if I do it!

  • @sc12100

It can be a good experience(ebay), but this is a pure rip off. this cool vintage guitar can be saved with a lot of work

  • @davey4557 Ebay is great. But you do take a risk when it comes to buying used gear that depends on its own function in order to work. I just don't think I could by a guitar on ebay without trying it out in person. But hey, thats just me though and Im sure other people do it and haven't had a problem except on a few occasions like this. Great vids!

  • put a big old nut in that guitar and play her with a slide

  • @herrfilm

I'd rather do a neck reset. This would be a greta restoartion if the guy had not paid top dollar for junk..Now he's out of money and can't afford repairs

  • Comment removed

  • @herrfilm

    The neck is TWISTED :(

    It's toast

  • @davey4557 twist and shout

  • @davey4557 In that case "Saint Dave" of guitars will have to come to the rescue. Perhaps he can do a trade for you. Paint your house, wash you car, do your laundry, cut your lawn, etc.......

  • @davey4557 did some looking on the net and $1200.00 is about $400 to much. You can get a 70's D-35 for about $800.00 from a used guitar store. They have a few available online. ????? Its a "slide-guitar"

  • how much did he drop on this anyways on ebay? I dont have any idea about guitars lets alone the prices!

  • @TriCityJDM

I think he told me he paid $1200

    poor bastard

  • got the 11 o clock shadow
