I had a Mayan cichlid many years ago, when I still kept fish. He attacks everything that moves near the tank, including toy fishes, fingers and even me when I bent lower to look at him XD
When he first arrived, nobody in the house knew what kind of fish he was (we caught him in the sea between Singapore and Malaysia, maybe an aquarist dumped him there?), so we were surprised when he made himself king of the tank. Damn, those were some good years with that fish...
Hey I got a male in a 75 with a red tail cat 4 jewl cichlids a female jaguar 2 dino birches and 3 jack dempseys all I need now is a female mayan o and mine keeps to his self and is really shy but runs the others away from his log
@kierankillerfish Thanks for the comment, though if you read the posts before you would have read that he is in a quarantine tank in the video, waiting for his tank to be sorted, plus the reasons for this. Not going to post all again lol
@dirkgonthier101 No substrate because its a holding/ quarantine tank for new arrivals, same answer for the decor because this reduces the risk of any thing else being the cause IF there was a out break of ich or anything else on the fish being quarantined. Small aquarium because its temp why he is monitored for 2 weeks, as for no compagnion...... i take it you know little about these fish?? You put absolutley anything else in with him and he will just kill it. This was proved by his previous..
@tropicalimports: Well, before yesterday nobody could read this info. All the viewer had, were the images as presented. And, based on the images, it was a poor fish. You should learn to inform your audience correctly. I have my doubts by your claim that this fish can't be held with some compagnion. I only know of 1 cichlid where that's the case (Nandopsis haitiensis, but even he can be held as a couple) and in literature your cichlid isn't considered so agressive, but soit.....
@dirkgonthier101 No and nobody else jumped to conclusions either!
You can doubt my "claims" all you like. But as you say in your post below, and I quote "But, I don't keep any Central-American cichlids (except Vieja argentea) because of their agressive nature"...... so you have no first hand knowledge of this species, only what you read and as we all know, referrance books are in most cases influenced by the thoughts and ideas of the writer and not always 100% accurate.
@tropicalimports It is not because I don't keep any Central-American cichlids (except Vieja argentea) that I'm completely ignorant about these fish. Because, Eric - my friend, working in the aquarium-business for 35 years and the owner of 25 tanks - has kept this species together with the Parachromis managuensis and another vicious Central-American cichlid of which I forgot the name (but will ask him the next time I see him). And, that went without a problem.
@tropicalimports There are just two differences between you two. For fish who are this big, a 3 f. tank just isn't enough. Eric kept his C-A. cichlids in a tank of 4 metre by 1 m. by 1 m. Total capacity: 4000 litres. And, he put the three couples together since their youth. But, I've told you already that it would be difficult to put another fish by yours because he's an adult. And, you have the disadvatage of holding him in a way too small tank to put another fish with him.
@dirkgonthier101 He isnt in a 3ft tank so I dont know where you got that from.
Listen, here are the facts about this fish ok, now pay attention please...... this fish was purchased by a friend of mine at approx 3", he kept in a 350 litre tank with silver arowana, ornate bichir and sengeles bichir. Then when he sold his tank on due to moving my brother had this fish and it went into his 7x2x2 tank at a size of approx 5". It was all fine untill it got to adult size and it just started........
attacking his other fish, it would bite the eyes out and then kill them. So he asked me to take it from him as I have 21 tanks.
It also killed a Black rhom piranha that got in with it and it will attack absolutley anything that goes near the tank, including meself or my dog when he sticks his nose near the tank! So regardless what Erics done this particular fish doesnt tolerate anything else.
Fish, unlike humans cant read books so dont know how they are ment to act, same as my piraya that eats
dead lance fish, if you read any referance book you will see it says that Hydrolycus scomberoides will not accept dead food. Yet mine does! So you see the point is reference books are books or reference, not books of facts! The difference being facts are set in stone where as reference is a general guide.
@tropicalimports I have no trouble believing that your fish is agressive. However, do you have a tank, large enough to keep him together with the Parachromis managuensis and a P. dovii? I doubt it. So, your claim that your fish can't be held together with other fish remains unproven. It's no wonder that he killed a Pirana. As long as it is a fight of one against one, cichlids will win it from any predator. I know only of one predator who's able to fight cichlids off, the Wolf-fish.
@tropicalimports I know that there exists a difference between books and the real life. The only thing I don't understand, is why you keep on saying it to me, because I made reference to books in only one sentence of all the sentences that I wrote to you. :)
@dirkgonthier101 ..... owner who had to move him from their tank because he was ripping the eyes out of the plecs. So had to put a divider in a tank with a black rhom piranha of greater size, this happy fella smashed his way through the divider and killed the said black rhom. So the only poor fish in this conversation would be the one you want to add in with him!
He has since been moved to his own 4ft tank, with nice black gravel, bog wood etc. So before you jump, next time look to see how far!
@dirkgonthier101 Although, I admit, it will be very hard to find a compagnion now he's an adult. For your information, I keep cichlids for over 20 years in 4 tanks (2x 900 liter + 1x 1500 liter + 1x 2000 liter). But, I don't keep any Central-American cichlids (except Vieja argentea) because of their agressive nature. Anyway, I hope that his living conditions have improved and I suggest (if I may) that you make a new video. My best wishes. DG
@dirkgonthier101 Saying you have kept cichlids for over 20 years doesnt prove anything Im afraid. Especially when you say you havnt kept the species of topic, or many others from the same region.
Ive been a fish keeper for 16 years and I never stop learning, even about fish Ive kept several times. So I certainly dont concider myself a expert in any shape or form but I do understand the facts, and in this case the facts are this fish is VERY aggressive, be this a individual case or not?
i fuckin hate those fish
