  • Correction... My father has told me that he and Andy are the same age. So that would put this video in the 1958 time frame. Not 1960.

By 1960 Michael Abene was playing for Maynard Fergusson.

    Apologies

  • For what it is worth most of the players in the Newport Youth Band from this time went Pro. Ronnie Cuber, Mike Abene, Andy Marsala, Eddie Gomez, Alan Rubin, Larry Rosen etc...

These are all major names in Jazz over the last 50 years.

The Newport Youth band is like a rolodex of jazz greats...

  • This kid Andy Marsala is not just good for 16, he is smokin' hot by ANY standards. And he looks so cool just calmly matching Canonball lick for lick like it's nothing. When he first launches into his solo, the way Canonball turns it's pretty obvious what he's thinking..... "holy crap!!"

  • Thanks man! It's incredible!!!

  • dang, that kids holding his own against cannonball, both are amazing,

  • Damn, that's all I have to say!!! That was beautiful, 16 year olds that play like that are 1 in every generation...

  • This video warms the heart!!

  • What is this tune called?

  • wow did this kid become a pro?? he is good

  • The tone quality of the young guy is almost the same as Julian's which is amazing. But Julian's sound is fatter. Overall, the technique that this guy has incredible judging from his age when he performed this.

  • The video is a gem; too bad sound quality is not so good. I studied at Berklee, later with Oliver Nelson, Joe Daley & played in Chicago and New York. Can honestly say that I never heard a 16-year-old player with chops like these, and Cannon is incredible. This isn't a competition, but rather a celebration of great jazz. Newport Youth Band's smokin.

  • Wow, really great! Lucky kid with a great practiced skill gets to play with Adderly, who clearly digs the kids playing. of course Cannonball is the master, but this kid is chasing him for real. Fun.

  • what a great footage,,Cannonball in great shape at full speed and inspired by this young incredible player,,,older cats playing and at the same time teaching the younger talented cats,,,it is great ...

  • thats my dad andy marsala!!!!

    :) he'll be 65 on june 30th

    -jillian marsala

  • Wow! Jillian, your dad was some player at 16!

  • indeed!

  • hy Jilian , tell us more about your dad !

where he lives , what does he do with music now ?? some cd's where earing him ??

    congratulate him please.

  • Did he keep playing the sax? He sounds great!

  • what has happened to this kid andy? i have never heard of him before.

  • Yes, America is so "dumbed out" now that you can only find kids wearing winter parkas when it is 80 degrees out. For shizzle, my biz nizzle.

  • when was this?

  • you guys are crazy. That kid is BURNING! Hes 16 and smokes most sax players i know over 30 in the bop language. its not a competition. cannonball loved the kids playing.

  • cool but he cant swing like the masters

  • congratulations nyshoefly!!!!!!!!

  • Geez, can someone make a positive comment about this? Andy was 16? What an incredible player, obviously studying Cannonball pretty heavily. Docsax' comments are right on...wow...I'm incredibly impressed. I doubt it was intended to be a competition to be honest...I don't think one could set a score to this. (Oh man, every chord tone is worth 2 pts., everything tri-tone sub is worth 4, pshhhhh)

  • I think people 2day have 4gotten it was harder to learn your craft back then. There was no aebersold play alongs or hundreds of music courses like we have now. To play at that level back then age 16 was awesome. As an aside, i believe when bird was woodshedding, he used to slow down his 78 deck and play along to Pres, analysing every note!

  • see the cool thing about this video is that it shows that marsala, obviously a prodigy is really freaken good with his licks and stuff, but then cannonball comes in with his shit and just slays the hell out of me, because not only can he play all those bop licks just as well, but he creates phrases that are really melodic and good like at 2:05/2:06. it just totally emphasis how good these masters of jazz actually were

  • Wow, incredible. What ever happened to Andy Marsala? I did a quick google search and learned that this band also featured young versions of Eddie Daniels, Ronnie Cuber, Al Cohn, and Eddie Gomez.

  • Some folks need to lighten up here, I play in the Basie Orchestra, that kid was 16 and he was playing his butt off, it's really hard to play at that level at 16, and worst yet to play beside Cannonball. And blacks and whites have been playing jazz together since it first began.

The kid could play. And Cannonball is one of the masters. Cannonball is clearly the mature player here, but for 16 that kid was very advanced. Good stuff.

  • For you people that think this kid is even close to Cannon please don't go into the music business. He isounds good but he sound like a boy next to a man.

  • great.

  • yeah but that kid can't touch cannonball's sound

plus Cannonball can consistently play this well over all keys and other changes probably by ear.

where as this kid was probably practicing these changes religously when he heard Cannonball was going to playing with him at the Newport Jazz Festival.

  • yeah that's how man! completely over the line!

  • I thought Cannonball was unbeatable, but I think Marsala won!

  • I dont think so .I thought cannonbal tore him a new you know what.cannon laided back on him a little

  • although cannonball may have outplayed him, that doesn't matter. The commentator noting cannon's approval means that he loved this guy's playing. Cannon's face says it all during marsala's solo: he's smiling. He know's the kid has worked hard, he's pro for his age and Cannonball respects that.

  • Grande Cannonball!

  • this is a real treat!!! thank you so much. Please keep this up there.

  • Great!! Love to see white and black people together sharing art. That's a lesson for everyone.

  • ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE!!

  • Thanks for sharing this fantastic video.
