@khhnator X3 or rogue likes with only 1 life! But in all honesty there used to be different kind of games for different players being developed, now the big companies only produce badly rushed console ports with hand holding. When they used to produce alot of different games and experiment with gaming ideas. Now theyr just afraid of trying anything new that will reduce their potential profit (since companies think potential profit = normal profit for some reason).
@khhnator The issues go deeper then that. Investors want security for their investments -> gaming companies want profit (and happy customers in rare cases) -> the masses that by games now are add and will rather write on forums on how the game is too hard instead of trying to learn from their mistakes and become better players -> the money paid goes back to the investors. This is the cycle that has to break. And i remember the old duke 3d arcade machines! so much fun! X3
Modern games are simply turning into passive and linear, graphics and special effects driven, hollywood scripts in game form. Along with infinite health and ammo, and everything.
@junkrika Yeah, but its the new market: kids with 1 s attention span that wants splosions and sparkly things and achievements for walking 1 foot and opening a door. The oldschool gamers are thrown in a ditch like used rags and now those oldschool gamers play good quality indiegames or actual good big games. Guess what the big companies buy up now? thats right indie games! cause they cant think of good ideas themselfs anymore besides "Modern diablo 6 the pandaren syndicate of cataclysm"
The problem with checkpoints is bad and/or inconsistent placement. I remember playing Fear and getting stuck at a point where there were three major combat encounters between checkpoints. It's not as if they immediately followed each other, either. There was a sufficient lull between each where a checkpoint could have been placed.
@dwkjo true aswell. Checkpoints can be used in a good way, but most games i played are just like the developers threw darts randomly when they placed them. In fact sometimes checkpoints are better then normal saves if one has save-every-3-min behavior like i do so i can revert any decisions i made during the last 30 min. But overall i like saving manually more, just incase the checkpoints bugs out or something.
@khhnator Which is why its optional to save, checkpoints are automatic.Theres many people that play doom no-save. I save alot cause i wanna rp in games and things doesnt always go the way i want it too (due to bad game design and bad writing by the developers deviating from my own view on what would happen in certain situations)
So you *have* to find obscure secrets and navigate squished up and poorly laid out dark tunnels? I see why this wasn't made by the iD team.
I made a massive three level PWAD when I was younger. It had some interesting ideas, but I played it again the other day and it's just too obscure - too many things triggering other things that aren't obvious. If I knew then what I know now it'd be designed to show you what the result is (e.g., through a window or whatnot). But in a commercial package? Hmm.
I knew you'd pull through. Now you have ALL the health you need to grab that gold key.
...
But what the hell triggered it to show up in the same room?! Man I finished this game, and looking back I can't fathom how as I'd NEVER put up with these maps again!
@BlooditeDrakan Tbh its what i play when i want to relax. Just get some duke 3d/doom custom map packs and let my guns loose. So much better level design then modern games tbh. *cough* one way corridor shooters *cough*.
This is the reason I like old fps, the devs didn't give a f*ck how many tries it would take you to finish a level as long as it's possible in 100 or so tries they ship the game.
Kinda sad now that we're in the era of checkpoints every 100 or so steps and regenerating health.
@berzerkerbg Checkpoints? He can save the game whenever he wants.
Regenerating health was added to make gameplay more smooth and continuous, as opposed to breaking the gameplay up with Doom-style Hide-and-Go-Seek of healing items. Why is that sad, exactly?
@Mestherion If i want to save, i save my own game. Checkpoints just...casual so it screams... Ill just let this dialogue prove my points: "IF you die and forgot to save (if the game even has a normal save function) you dont loose progress! let me hold your hand and give you full health after 10 seconds aswell, we cant let you die. Oh and here are some infinite ammo boxes (duke nukem forever)! Oh you still died well no worries you dont weapons that badly! here is a BFG 9000 for free"
@Mestherion What im getting it as in summary: Modern games hold the player hands to the degree that your not even playing a game anymore. Scrounging for medpacks? If i start doing that i start playing smart and strategic instead of lowering the difficulty. Regenerating health is as gamebreaking as god mode. just stand behind cover for 10 s and there i have a halo style shield again. Fair/and sometimes unfair challenges makes players better, handholding = just bad gaming design.
@MrYaotubo I'd argue with you further, but it seems you are beyond reason. You bring up Halo's shield but ignore the fact that Halo is bloody hard on the highest difficulty setting. So apparently, that shield really doesn't do as much as you think.
@Mestherion I did play halo myself, and i used the term *halo shield* as a term coined by the internet of the effect shields/hp regeneration has. And i agree on not discussing it further with you, we are both dead set and theres no point in continuing this discussion any further with you.
@berzerkerbg Dont forget invincible walls that are composed of air and maybe a 1 foot high fence. Oh and levels that just give you guns in the right situations. But yeah i agree with you! Oldschool needed a measure of patience, add kids (no offense to people with this issues that hampers them in real life) are just ruining gaming in general because they are somehow the majority of the market, in this push button get sugar/instant gratification generation with add patience.
@berzerkerbg I play *path of exile* (beta as of now) and its what diablo 3 should have been. Diablo 3 is so casual it hurts my eyes to look at it. Free respeccs in town, rainbows... -.-* they just ruined the name "Diablo" from gaming history with the casual (and probably also console ported when they get to it) *new and improved* diablo 3
Look at that automap. Evilution is full of intricatly designed levels.

medipacks?!?!! health bar? you are such casuals
in my time we did not have such handhelding
we had 3 lives! and one hit you were dead!
if you were good you would get one extra life at 10000 points and another 30000 and that was it!
and when you died to redo the same stage all over again
and you had to do it in public while standing up!

I find it inspiring to not restart the level when completely dead and getting the card in the end, painful but manly. Very manly.

The BFG would probably come under more usage if it had it's own ammo set. As it is, I think Kikoskia's saving his cells for the plasma rifle.
