@win2kpro Even theo TheSeventiethSeven's "fuck ton" answer was quite sufficient, i thought i might elaborate. The KC-10 is capable of fuel flows of over 1000 gallons a minute, or over 6,500 lbs of fuel a minute :)

and what we learn form this is british pilots > american pilots at formation flying as our refuelling method relies entirely of the skill of the pilot to line up with the drogue to get fuel. With this, the boom is guided into the plane yet they still fail?

@willwoodhouse If anything it would be the opposite, because a drogue can move around more freely than a boom. So once a drogue is hooked up, the pilots can wiggle around more than if they were connected to a boom. It doesn't really matter though. Air refueling no matter what method is extremely difficult and proves just how precise air force pilots have to be.

@willwoodhouse Yeah, just the opposite. A drogue basket is alot easier to capture as the pilot and the basket can move around more and still transfer. The boom capture needs much more precise stick inputs. Mate, with parliment shredding your military pretty soon you won't have any aircraft to refuel anyhow.

I think it's because the A-10 was moving too high, if he kept it in he could've damaged the boom and the A-10. Just a guess.

They either hit the outer refueling limits, causing a disconnect, or just got a disconnect. Either way, the retracting of the boom is auto.

there is no way we can slow the -10 down to refuel a helicopter. Second, the helicopter would never be able to make it through the jetwash from the KC10 or get high enough. A10's and C130s are the slowest aircraft we refuel..C130's refuel at around 190 kts and that is pushing it

The connection point is pretty much right in front of the pilots view so atleast he can see what he's doing, unlike with FalconAF.
