I saw sakai in napa recently. He was at opus one winery - the robert mondavi/Baroness Rothschild winery. He was wearing a beige suit and was with two other japanese guys. He took two bottles of wine home. A 2005 and 2007 cab...Both were too young to drink now...wait 5 years and decant properly and you will have a nice glass of wine. Both bottles retail for about 250-300 dollars a bottle.
Chen-san beat him once (Mr. Iron Chef). Sakai-san beat Chen-san twice (2000th dish special and King of Iron Chefs). Sakai-san also had the largest number of wins as well as the longest winning streak (winning percentage goes to Michiba-san). I do like Chen-san as a close second (with his sunny and humble personality), but Sakai-san with his precision, wittiness, calculations, artist's touch takes it in my book
Speaking of Michiba-san, I just saw him on tv here in Japan recently, in a low-budget commercial for rice. It was a bit sad to see him in such a lame situation as I always thought of him as a bit of a titan.

Regardless who the cook, chef might be, it's a matter of individual taste. While a person enjoys this type of dish, another person may not.
I have a very strong feeling that the panel who the chairman picks, already knows that they are under instruction to pick the Iron Chef as the winner.
The judges in iron chef america doesnt have any culinary critics in most of the shows from memory and another thing is that they dont reflect the main ingredients. They use all the spices but i seldom hear the judges say those stuffs exentuate the main ingredients. It just taste nice....fudge! even a pack of instant noodle can taste nice....
The battle against Seigel was a good one, but I can't say the same about the one against Flay. I never tasted the food so I'm in no position to complain about that. However, Sakai was rated lower in presentation after putting in such intricate work while Flay overfilled his coconut shell and even originality after making trout ice cream while Flay stuck to familiar grounds.

I'm not hating on Flay, but Sakai is way WAY WAY more skilled than Flay. Even Flay said that Sakai is like the master chef. Flay knows how he stacks up with Sakai and Flay respects Sakai because he is truly indeed the best of the best.
Lol. Your just another Flay hater teodocio. Flay beat Sakai and beat Morimoto in a rematch. Who cares if Flay can't peel faster than Sakai? It's just peeling, but then again you Flay haters always find something to hate about Bobby Flay no matter how trivial it is.

makes me so pissed that bobby flay is suuposedly an iron chef too. no way any of the american iron chefs have even the basic skill masterd like Sakai. let me see Flay peel anything without an assistant.
i wish i could download all the actual iron chef japanese episodes, seeing as how i can't seem to find any episodes at any store to purchase in the u.s. Unless someone here can show me the light!
