Great recording of one of my favorite pieces. Horszowski however, great pianist though he was, was certainly not Horowitz's teacher. They knew each other (Horszowski was 11 years older) and may have played for each other, but as far as I know Horowitz's only real teacher was Felix Blumenfeld at the Kiev Conservatory - within a couple of years of his graduation, Horowitz was an international star.
I learned to love the clarinet after hearing Kell doing Mozart quintet in A Major. He gave lessons to Benny Goodman. Later I learned that he played with upper lip between teeth and mouthpiece.
@Many clarinetists play with a "double lip embouchure; I did not find it made much difference and my stamina was much less; I felt more "secure / certain with the single lip I gad been using.
Sidney Forrest at Peabody used to teach a double lip.
This is a great lesson for all clarinettists to stick to their own sound and try not to play up to the piano, which can overwhelm the performance. Really great stuff here, Thanks for the posting.
Do you by any chance have Kell playing the Saint Saens??? I have been looking for it for ages! I've seen the lp years ago, and I am pretty sure it never made it to CD...
Kell's feathery sound with ample vibrato has been controversial for years. (Less so nowadays as many younger players don't even known of him). He was SO famous. Many thanks for this upload--a recording I had never heard.
Bahh! This is absolutely beautiful! What happened to good clarinet tone? I am tired of this homogenous crap that all the famous folks are playing. This, my friends, is genius.
After a re-check, you are absolute right, It's murray perahia... But I can't change the header. I tried to change it and it gave "check your description". So, everyone reading this message, Pianopera is right.
Thanks for confirming. Of course, Horszowski knew Horowitz well, they had dinner together quite often (together with Wanda and her father Maestro Toscanini),
Btw, this recording was made on Januari 16th, 1949.

I prefer karl leister. Although his heavy use of vibrato is intresting in a way.

Kell was my teacher's (Alan Hacker) teacher. I have only recently taken a real interest in him. What an individual!

very nice recording!
But where did you find that information that Horszowski was the "piano teacher" of Horowitz? Simply not true!
