@geoago We have Tejas for that. Gripen may or may not win. Its biggest problem is limited range and limited payload compared to double engined fighters. Its best merit is its turn around time--10 mins of arming and fueling and its again in the air that too after landing on normal roads.

Tejas is a Light Combat aircraft(LCA) and the grippen is a multi role combat aircraft (MRCA)..both serve different purposes so don't compare

This is/was the original choice of the IAF. Before the Indian Goverment tried to get competitive bidding thinking it would lead to price slashing. IAF should insist on this plane as it meets their requirements. If only the US will not throw a spanner.

Sorry, the strategic requirements of longer range, payload etc are already being addressed by the SU 30 MKI.

The IAF wanted a lighter fighter to fill the gap between the SU 30 MKI & the delayed LCA.

Please note that strategic strength and depth also includes sheer numbers viz having enough aircrafts on both fronts (China & Pakistan).

Euro Fighter, Rafael & FA 18 Super Hornet are just too costly.

Not just per unit cost but also logistics, personnel training, spares and support systems.

When I said longer range I meant longer than LCA and Mirage-2000, If you look at the requirement (talk to d pilots) its twin engine which is required! you can confirm it frm IAF!

Secondly, as I said don't go by quoted price on wikipedia etc..The price quoted by EuroFighter is fixed which includes partnership into the program plus T-3 transfer to HAL! Prices of other jets r highly deceptive!

Logistical, personal will be taken care of BAE (Jaguar, HAWK) & EADS.MIG-35 in comparison is stone age!

If you need to know the requirement, you should talk not just to the pilots but also the guys who actually plan and design the operational & Strategy doctrine.

Better range is not such a stumbling block in times of air-to-air refueling. And maneuverability is a moot point in todays BVR warfare environment.

Prices are highly deceptive but Geo-politics is even more so
