  • Emmylou, from a time when she still could sing.

  • @MrRazorblade999 are you tone deaf?

  • @MrPhuqueu Nope. But you gotta agree her voice has changed very much since 1976?

  • I love this music and listen to it all the time . I miss these simple times so much

  • Check out Levon Helm sidling up to Emmylou Harris afterwards. Levon, you dog, you. If cool were people Levon Helm would be India.

  • There's a reason why they call this group "The Band". Singular, one of a kind.

  • I was 17 when this came out. I've had a crush on Emmylou ever since.

  • these guys have a thing with sad songs.

  • Ya know what makes this song even more wonderful? For a literature geek like me anyway. . .is that Emmylou looks just like Evangeline is described in Longfellow's poem.

  • This is truly one of the best songs ever. Thanks for posting.

  • Can imagine her waiting on the bank.sad song indeed,

  • the more you listen to The Band the more you are inclined to agree that they are a musician's band.

  • emmylou lost the love of her life, giving her tunes that sad, haunting quality

  • Love this stuff ... The Band members playing other instruments ... Danko sawing the fiddle mountain style, Levon on the mandolin .... great vocals all around ... Emmylou is the voice of God.

  • Levon Helm IS THE MAN!!! Read his book This Wheel's On Fire and get an insight into what makes successful musicians out of good or even great musicians.

  • i love this song

  • The greatest "band" ever.

  • Levon always struck me as a man that could fix your fence.

  • Beautifull song...in my foulest moments I would block the music and focus on her nipples getting harder throughout this song.

    I love this song.

  • Plain and simple . REAL musicians.

  • @gf45100 Wouldn't you?

  • @gf45100 He learned that from his ol bird dog back in Arkansas. Wow just thought of how they would sing Ol Red. Man I miss them.

  • The Band is certainly one of the most talented groups of all time.

  • What a great song and performance... Thanks for posting.

  • Definately a bass overdub because no one but Rick could be playing that way and he is playing the fiddle too!

Emmylou is the most lovely mammal of all time. Nobody else even comes close. Always loved how she wore a blue dress for this.

I saw the Band three or four times and always got knocked out by them.

I used this song to launch a boat that I built and will build another boat named "Emmylou." I'd like to name one "Evangeline" but that ain't lucky!

  • @GriffonKeeper Have you hears her do the Beatles' "Here There and Everywhere"? Gives me goosebumps.

  • spooky good

  • manuel looks hilarious behind the set. first time i was like, what the hell? is he even playing?

  • the very best song ever

  • From the soul - to the soul! Pure:)

  • From the soul - to the soul! Pure:)

  • Scorcese has a lot to answer for, for fucking up the filming of The Last Waltz. This is an exception.

  • simply a gem

  • Fantastic, she is CLASS, love Joni too.

  • another classic from the walzs I can't say anything else. Watch "the waltz"

  • Brings back great memories. Man did they play the sweetest music!

Emmylou Harris just blends in so perfectly. Glad I was around to hear and buy their 33's.

  • THE BAND. and thats all you can say.

  • and heres Richard playing drums..

    Rick on fiddle

  • Anytime I hear Emmylou Harris, it makes me crave cornbread. Whenever Levon Helm sings, I get to wantin' a glass of good whiskey straight up. Thank Goddess "Evangeline" gets me crazy without all the calories!

  • What a gem I have discovered here! It seems Emmylou just can't sing a bad song with anybody. Do you agree?

  • @mclenptp

    I agree.

  • great song

  • @TheLazZzar

You're a damn liar.............and if you are telling the truth then you are the most tragically undeserving lousy son of a bitch that ever lived.

  • Oh Lord, did I have a crush on Emmylou back in the day. Oh wait, I still do. :-)

  • @newmusicentrepreneur

    Yep! I understand!

  • Absolutely spectactular!!! Levon Helm has always been an inspiration to me, but these guys together and with Emmylou is just magic.

  • la voix de la chanteuse m'a touchée,elle ressemble aussi ,même physiquement à Joan Baez quand elle était jeune (1970).la chanson est aussi belle et le groupe est bien compact.

  • I love the old folk-pop musc.

  • Why desactivate the share button? This is not the spirit of Youtube...

  • ELH i realy love u

  • Loveley, lovely, lovely...... Mickey, Macedonia

  • Ditto, Cherokee

  • Rick Danko was just a sweetie. Sad he's gone...

  • @CherokeeBPM I think it was this post someone sent me a private message claiming Richard is gone, but not Rick...LOL...someone is behind on the news...

  • Just AWESOME.

  • Levon is the greatest performer of all time. Luv u Levon

  • The voice of an angel.

  • Venue is Winterland Thanksgiving 1976

  • i can hear angels singing!

  • what is truly Amazing about this song, is that none of the members of The Band are playing their first and foremost instrument. For Levon it was the drums, Rick the bass, Richard the piano, Robbie the electric guitar, Garth, the acordian? Come on. It just goes to show how much diversity these guys had, and you can't really see that in modern music. That's why I love these guys.

  • @demetriuscastor so very true. each one of them is a true musician.

  • i love the way danko plays fiddle

  • Hell Yea! Richard on drums, Levon on madolin, garth on acordion, rick on fiddle! and of course robbie on guitar.

  • Hell Yea! Richard on drums, Levon on madolin, garth on acordion, rick on fiddle! and of course robbie on guitar

  • These guys changed the entire musical scene of the time, They burst on the world and just took it over. Everyone was affected, even Eric Clapton was moved, he started

in with Bonnie,Delaney, and friends as a direct result. They were one of THE BEST bands of all time, I love these guys, Saw them at Watins Glen in 73, and since, at little

clubs. HOT TIP listen to everything they recorded.

  • I have been looking for this forever!!! I watched this with my mom when I was like 7 and became obsessed with it!! I lost the vhs and had to buy the dvds and then found this!

  • makes me proud to be a cajun, i love the story of evangeline, its so sad though

  • If I ever a Daughter have, her namebr this!

  • Emmylou Harris is hot.

  • @InsanelyINsane you know what is nuts? she is even delicious now in her sixties. oops I just dated myself...as if!!!!

  • @InsanelyINsane Emmylou is still hot....

  • @sgtpep5 Yes, yes she is...

  • @InsanelyINsane Emmylou is obviously an angel come down from Heaven. :-)

  • Evangeline is a christian name coming from evangelist, and Christian is a name too.

  • Thirty-four years and I still can't find out what was so special about the way Emmylou sang, The Band played, and Robbie wrote songs. I'm still amazed.

  • ITS NICE

  • LAST WALTZ- WOW

  • Awesome

  • omg, my names evangeline(:

    this songs about me. shame.

  • the genius of Scorcese... showing the first fifteen seconds of how easy these musicians turn back into regular people; almost as easy as them creating such beautiful harmony

  • Hm. Only just now noticed the bass overdubs here. Wonder what the rough cut sounded like.....still, frickin' amazing song. Really need to listen to Emmylou more than I have...

  • love it love it just love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very under appreciated gem.

  • Perfect blend of vocals and music. Love the harmony.

  • a cross between a waltz and zydeco

  • Emmylou Harris has perhaps one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard - and the The Band were in top form in that Last Waltz !

  • nice voice but she needs a serious makeover

  • love how they all switch instruments so easily.

  • Belle mélodie!

  • I've been madly in love with Emmylou since the first time I ever saw The Last Waltz. I was 21. I'm 53 now and still got a mad crush on her. hmmm, now that I'm divorced....LOL

  • lolz thats my name 2! :]

  • Queen of the Rodeo forever. Emmy Lou xxx

  • LOL, I doubt anyone would say Richard is one of the most technically skilled drummers around, but he's got a good feel for the instrument. He does a good job on Rag Mama Rag, too. I wonder how he would have turned out if he had devoted himself to that instrument. But, as Ringo once said to Keith Moon, "We've already got a drummer."

  • They worked on the lyrics and music up until the last minute before filming...this was the last time they were all recorded/filmed together.

  • The Band with Emmylou Harris / The Last Waltz Suite - Evangeline

  • quite possibly, musically, the greatest band ever.

  • @dsf35 I second that motion.

  • @dsf35 .....without a doubt.

  • @dsf35 , Other than musically, how is music judged?

  • @dsf35 by musically I mean every single instrument and band member is always letter perfect.

  • @dsf35 oh, indeed...indeed...

  • quite possibly, musically, the greatest band ever.

  • I want two things: a time-machine, and Emmylou.

  • This song is amazing!! Again, the Band so underrated!! They deserve a lot more credit!! They were amazing!! I wasn't even born yet when they were together, but I would have loved to go see them!

  • Rent The Last Walz! It's a fantastic musical experience with many famous singers joining The Band. Martin Scorsese's soulful biographical masterpiece, soars as their triumphant exit & tribute to a golden era of great musicians. 34 years old, yet it's fresh, clear and good-sounding, rivaling the latest productions of anything today.

  • @SIMKINETICS

The band is way before my time. I've seen this movie several times already. It still makes me want to cry, of joy! I appreciate talented musicians & GOOD music!! The Band deserves more credit!

    That doesn't exist anymore.

  • @Ergreenthumb Kudos to you for finding & enjoying old gold. I bought 'The Band' album in 1969 while living in Germany, & still have the vinyl! Imagine our hippie parties back then! There was musical magic in those days. 'The Last Waltz' graciously captures that era of music & many of its great musicians inside & outside The Band. It makes me cry too! Such beauty! Such goosebumps! Such a long time ago.

  • brilliant song

  • hi agian

  • It almost seems that Rick is afraid to sing his parts when he's surrounded by this much otherworldly talent.

  • so beautiful.

  • SO how does it get better than the Band and Emmylou in their prime?

  • united states folk music catches the band (mostly a canadian group)

  • @medievalguitar2 thats because Evangeline was from the Maritimes ,a french ocupation area, eastern Canada, but were forced south to Louisianna

  • @vaughnsalem Acadians=cajuns.

  • woodstock resident and frequent attendee of levon's rambles. evangeline with emmylou and the band has long been a favorite. pure americana. i was just gifted with a grandaughter named evangeline. a blessing indeed.

  • I forgot how great The Band was. These guys are just unique. And Emmylou Harris' voice is from another world. Best band that mixed blues, rock and country. They really created a unique sound.

  • being of acadian heritage..this song is not only worshipped by their words..but the musical arrangement & the harmonizing sends shivers thru me,,,,,CLASSIC!

  • A Song that keeps you alive!

    Simply amazing

  • That is one beautiful accordion.

  • Richard Manuel on... drums?

  • @misteravocado5 Yeah he was a GREAT drummer from what I read in Levon's book "This Wheel's On Fire"

  • love the internet-haven't heard this song in 30 yrs or so,awesome!

  • Gram Parsons died a few years before this concert but he and Emmylou make some great music ...too bad he never lived longer, wonder if they would of kept working together

  • the last waltz looks like a proper music video.. yknow? the performances are studio quality and the camera work is so fluid

  • @elstroshitnonstop Yeah, but Emmy Lou Harris isnt in her freakin underwear.

  • Levon and Emmylou harmonizing is one of the most beautiful things ever put to vinyl...too bad they didn't do more songs together, it's magic.

  • Great track. Blatant bass overdub though.

  • @JBriggs1987

Didn't even notice until you mentioned it, but yes indeed. Alas.

  • @JBriggs1987 True, but the three people in The Band that played bass (Levon, Rick—obviously—and Robbie all have studio credits on bass) were all needed for other parts for the video. Not meaning to pick on you, but would blatant guitar, fiddle or mandolin overdubs be any better?

  • @redbirdjazzz I see what you are saying, I only mentioned it because there is no bass to be seen in the video, wheras the fiddle, guitar and mandolin can quite clearly be seen being played (whether it be live or overdub, they are present). But nobody can be seen to be playing bass. Which I find strange, as the bassline is so good in this song. Thought Robbie or Martin might have at least wanted a bass present on stage, for authenticity if no other reason.

  • superb performance-the 60's and 70's were excellent for many genres of music. unfortumately, quality songs like this one went from few and far between to almost non-existent these days.

  • la escuche por primera vez en la pelicula de scence of the woman en la escena de al pacino sentado tomando un trago...genial cancion!!!!

  • Zigzag,

I agree... her dress is not the most flattering thing I've seen her wear.

But this is Emmylou, and (without being bold or disresectful), she always looks good.

But she sounds even better (and I think she would take that as a compliment), especially as an accompanist.

There are few performances which surpass this one... a powerful song sung by very powerful performers.

  • The Low Anthem played this tonight with Brown Bird. Mind blowingly good.

  • So beautiful, everything. The song. The movie. Emmylou.

  • What I would have given to be her on that stage with those guys!!!!! Too bad I'll never sing that well. Levon.... you can do anything.

  • Great song - awful dress.

  • Like one of you guys said, makes me wish for another time & place.

Have got the dvd and cd of the concert and play them all the time , FULL BLAST.

Thank god my kelpie has good taste in music too, she really digs it.

One day she'll learn to sing and join in with me !

  • then don't fucking watch it get the fuck out of here bitch this is my history

  • @gassyjeff Okay, well in that case, fuck off.

  • the greatest combination of musical and cinematic talents i've seen and heard, emmylou's loveliness is the icing on the cake.

  • what a doll an singer

  • The Last Waltz is a remarkable film about the unhappy exiting of a most remarkable band... The Band.

But this song was the highlight of that outstanding evening... Emmylou nails it, and Levon is right there with her, note for note.

  • Rick danko is from my home town

  • I saw this movie with only a DVD, very pretty. Nice-nice Martin Scorsese. Emmilou Harris is lovely here

  • Rick starts of real sweet, gets a little mean, and then Emmelou Harris takes over. Just when you think she owns it, Levon does the next verse with her backing it 2nd verse. Then Levon harmonises and Emmelou sings on. These ppl are just great.

But why is her name not mentioned in the edit area?!

  • she wasnt actually at the last waltz event. this was "filmed" later

  • It my ringtone too

  • Thanks for posting, Great video!!!

  • At 2:40, Garth sings 'way' in 'away', accentuating the end. Martin the director caught it and got it on there. Love this song....love it!

  • Good catch, but that's Richard Manuel.

  • I've listened to this a hundred times and never heard that before. Cool.

  • @TallRingo

    You know....thats Richard...

  • Manuel and Danko have passed on

  • i love this tune.

  • What a song!! I never thought there is this song titled 'Evangeline" w/c happens to be my name also. Just like the song , so patiently waiting for the man I have promised to love. I wonder, do I need to curse the soul of Mississippi Queen as well?

  • You might wanna throw in a curse for Katrina for the gulf coast havoc she created---Great song though.

  • oh certainly... well I wish I could but sometimes mother nature just throws back what we do to her. Im glad you like the song..it reflects my mood when I listen to this song.

  • Curse and I'm sure you'll get what you truly want. I assure you.

  • one curse is enough evangeline

  • Emmylou Harris is sexy here damn...

  • whose drumming?

  • Richard Manual (Manuel) who usually plays piano.

  • "The Last Waltz" was an amazing film and am glad that I can enjoy it again. Pure grace.

  • i love The Last Waltz so much i have Levon, Rick and Robbie's autographs. i just had to meet them !!

  • Timeless. Robbie!!!

  • brings back some great memories

    thanks

  • As fresh now as it was then. A simple, precise tune sung by people whose voices are just so soulful, whose musicianship is beyond reproach. Faultless.

  • This is the best song of this incredible concert... perfect harmonies, clear lyrics.

Emmylou is so consistent... no wonder everyone wants to record with her.

  • emmylou harris the great singer country!!! have a nice voice !!!

  • to MrJsloan86, go buy the movie! this song is awesome. written right before this concert i believe.

  • this has been my favorite part of the movie since i was little-thanks so much!!

  • I think this is a very special performance because it's a song that has three lead vocal parts, and ALL of them are completely, 100% flawless.

Also, the way Levon sings "Bayou Sam, from South Lousianne" sounds insanely bad ass.
