I got a USA famicom version! All tex ar ein English and play in my NES without any problem! Besides that, these people didnt mentioned that there is a Sound mode cheat and Stage Select, also there is a secret post credits ending if you hold select and star
omg I did not know this! i am an NES and Contra fan and i never knew this much was different! is there a way to play famicom games on an American NES? maybe through game genie?
I like the Famicom version the best, because it gives a better feel of the original arcade version than the American and PAL NES versions. Sometimes localization is awful, like what 4Kids and Jaleco did.
Contra/Probotector series has always been about robots and machines for me. Propably becouse I been playing Probotector since I was a child. Now playing Contra just seems out of place. Contra or Probotector, no matter, still kicking so much butt.
contra was altered in the PAL regions as german had a law where in video games humans were not allowed to kill other humans or something like that, here in the UK there not to strict but the contra series was never as huge as it was in the USA
Yup, Humans have been replaced by robots in other games in Germany too like Turok on the N64.
Konami had intended to port US copies of Contra to the UK still (as other formats released it as Contra) But there were TWO versions of the NES in Europe (the Mattel version and the NES version) and only the NES version could play US copies because of region locking on the Mattel version, so they played it safe and released Probotector instead.
This isn't uncommon for Contra games, in Super C some levels are missing in the US release. Then there's the lack of the Konami code in the U.S version of Contra 3 and in Contra Hard Corps you actually get three hit points in the Japaneses version, WTF.
I misunderstood what I read in Contra 4 back when I made that post. Shortly after I really didn't notice a difference between the U.S and Jap home versions of Super C. In the Museum section under bonus content in Contra 4 it just says the title was shortened on the American home version of Super C to avoid accidental reference to the Iran Contra scandal.
Much like Chelnov (a.k.a. Atomic Runner), which Japan thought it was a reference to the Chernobyl disaster in northern Ukraine, but Data East responded in a television program that the name "Chelnov" was merely a relative of Karnov, the title character of one of the company's games, and was not at all influenced by the events at Chernobyl. However, the arcade game's plot was redone for its Mega Drive/Genesis release to avoid being sued again.
You listed Spider-man as one of the bad games, I fondly remember throwing my atari controller at the wall many times trying to defeat the Green Goblin :D Probotector sounds kind of neat with robots, wish we had the Japanese version though, the little stuff makes the game stand out more. I heard Rush'n Attack was the basis for Contra, in game play and such.
I live in australia and i own probotector and personally i think its cooler although i do like the human characters lance and bill because they remind me of stallone and schwarzenegger.
Nice comparison. Now do NES Lifeforce vs. Famicom Salamander. I think those 2 deserve a similar treatment with all the little differences in one amazing game :)
Good points. You missed the fact that the level 8's background animates faster and faster as you shoot the Red Falcon. Also, the Japanese version has a harder difficulty in the first playthrough.

Wasn't it called Gryzor in Japan? I'm so confused!

No, that was one of the biggest mix-ups with Contra, though.

Oh yes I remember that version, that was actually the only version I played! And I'm from Portugal.
I love imports.
While you say those things at the beginning, there is a younger audience that doesn't know the game while being interested in older software.
