I think because phalanx became ruler with all those crests that he some how gave to arma -_0?? maybe phalanx was setting firebrand up when he found out about the crest of infinity. or something. note this is all in the human world. lots going on ... wish I knew why and how and when and where does it end to correct the begining and middle... but I guess we will never find out. I think what happened was after the events of Gargoyle's Quest, Firebrand went to the human world where he fought Aurther on a few occasions. Then the events of Demon's Crest took place and Firebrand returned to the demon world to fight over the crests. After he obtained them, Phalanx gave him a cheap shot and took the crests. However, the crests flew away either because Phalanx hadn't truly won them or because the Crest of Fire was broken into 5 parts by Firebrand before his death.
I prefer to think that Firebrand split the Crest of Fire into five parts though, and that's why the Crest of Infinity did not appear. The crests flew to other locations or demons, and Phalanx only retained the Crest of Heaven. Firebrand eventually resurrected after many decades with his retained part of the Crest of Fire. Arma gathered the lost crests. The other parts of the Fire Crest flew to other demons. That's where the game begins. Phalanx could not find the parts of the Fire Crest however.
So Phalanx had no choice but to wait for Firebrand to resurrect and find the lost parts of the Fire Crest. Phalanx used Firebrand to gather all the crests for him, much as he had done the first time. His plan was to use the Crest of Heaven to call forth the Crest of Infinity once Firebrand had brought the crests to him. That is why the ending in the vid shows Phalanx mistakingly assuming that Firebrand had all the crests. So in this case it backfired and Phalanx dies immediately.

It also confirms that the Crest of Fire was split into various parts with Firebrand keeping one part. But no in this game when you won (with the bad ending) nothing is allright the "evil" has been defeated but by killing him, you just brought more chaos to hell. Phalanx speech along with the music increases even more my feeling about this ending.
In my opinion, on every ending of Demon's Crest you as Firebrand change both the demon and human realm for better or worse. Firebrand is no hero, he's a demon warrior who only seeks for the battle of his life and the impact that his own quest has does not change his ways.
No matter if it's a "bad", good, normal, or best ending, Firebrand will always look forward for the next challenge.
The guy game uses a weird logic.. The more ass you kick, the more fit you are to be a ruler? And also, Firebrand kicking more ass also somehow makes Phalanx more destined to use the crest of heaven somehow... It only makes sense via learning curve.. Plotwise not so much. lol
