  • Had this exact problem on my 2001 Dakota (4.7L v8) but it ONLY seemed to happen on interstate/highway driving. Several mechanics said it was the transmission or the rear differential but I had read where the TPS could cause those symptoms as well. Had them replace the TPS and it's been fine ever since. This was about a year ago now.

  • @Techie1935 Yeah I thought it was my transmission at first too because the reving would sometimes cause the transmission to shift when it shouldnt.

  • @Techie1935 Should note that they said it was the transmission because it almost always came with a downshift while on the interstate/highway but not always. Most of the time the variance in the RPM would cause the transmission to shift thinking I had stepped on the gas so it would give me more power. (NOT good when the roads were icy!)

  • Thanks! wish I saw this a while back..spent about $1000.00 over the last two years having a mechanic try to straighten this out. Correction ex-mechanic, I can tell he never changed the TPS just by looking at it. I love my 2003 durango, it's got 190,000mi and now is running like the day I bought it :-)

  • @gl797 sorry forgot..on the 4.7L I didn't need to remove anything to get at the sensor.

  • @gl797 Yeah I had mine at the garage a couple times and the mechanics couldnt figure it out. I finally did some research online, fixed it myself and posted this here to help others with the same problem. I love my durango too! Mine only has 80,000 on it so far and it drives really nice! I dont plan on ever getting rid of it!

  • my dodge neon did that but it eventually stalled out..

  • thanks u saved me a few hundred dollars . The world needs more people like u . thanks again!

  • Could be the ignition.

  • @XGNRambo It was the Throttle Position Sensor. I replaced it and it idles fine now.

  • Wow, I'm pretty thrilled with this video. Many mechanics didn't know what was wrong with it. The trottle also does this if I'm trying to hold a constant speed on the highway. Now I have an idea what it might be. Thanks so much!

  • Same here Buddy REPLACED THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR AND IT FIXED THIS PROBLEM! I have a 2004 dodge ram 1500 the shop I took it to cleaned it first and the next day it started back doing the same thing and that when they replaced it.... Thanks for the video it helped a lot.

  • Replaced mine today... thanks for the post. Glad i didnt have to break the bank. 06 V8 Dakota...

  • i have an 03 durango, thats doing the same exact thing, only between the 0 and 1rpms. took it to the shop and they just said change the spark plugs and should be fine. did that, and it will be fine for a few days, then go back to revving up and down. also notice it at stop signs and red lights. is it easy to fix, or something i should take in to the shop?

  • @sbolton015 I dont think there is much to fixing it. You just unplug the sensor and unbolt it from the intake and put the new one on and plug it in. I did mine at home, Didnt take it to the garage and it probably took less than 10 minutes to fix.

  • @sbolton015 armando.86@live.com

i have 00 durango my car is turned off the rpm go up end down

  • @paco4148 I got it at Advance Auto Parts for $37.39 but if you look it up on their website it is listed for $33.59. It is part number EC3208 if you have the 4.7L V8 in your truck like I do.

  • I have had this problem too. I was just about to comment and say what it was but then I saw the video saying it was fixed. Nice video.

  • thank you for posting this my 2001 dodge cummins has the same problem it dosent do it all the time but sometimes i will get it checked out ASAP!

  • i had the same problem and it took me awhile to find info about it. thanks for posting it.

  • @228joepr yep no problem.

  • Hey have you had any other issues with your 02? I used to have a 2000 durango and it was bullet proof! i sold it to buy a car.. bad choice lol. im gonna get another Durango hopefully.

  • @clarda1 I had the engine go out with 56,000 miles on it. Luckily I bought a warrenty when I bought the durango so they paid to replace the engine. Other than that and this minor idle problem I havent had any trouble with it, it is a sweet truck! I wouldn't trade it for anything. Did you see dodge just came out with new durango's for 2011? I want to see them make a SRT-8 version of the new durango. I might consider buying one a few years down the road if they do!

  • Does this happen while driving as well? I have 02 durango, 140,000 miles, It use to only do this on muggy days or rainy days, now is constantly doing it. I also have engine lite on, but it stating evap has small leak. So hopefully all I need to do is replace the throttle position sensor and should be good to go another 140,000 miles.

  • @jeffosborn60438 Yep it did it while driving too. I would notice while at a steady speed it would rev and cause the transmission to downshift. I replaced the throttle position sensor and it no longer does it at all! Pretty easy and cheap fix too!

  • im gonna to try and fix this on mine today , its been doing the same thing for about 3 months

  • hi when you REPLACED THE THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR did you have to tune it with a volt meter or did you just bolt it on and drove? please let me know thanks!!!

  • @grizzleybearz282004 Didnt use a volt meter. All you have to do is plug the new one in and bolt it on and your good to go!

  • Watch my video response to see how it starts up and idles after I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor. It is how it should start up and idle normally.

  • I have a 2003 and my wife has the same problem and he said the same thing about what you have a video of. Is it hard to change out?

  • @wbush357 Nope it was really easy to change. All I had to do is remove the air intake hose and the plasic square piece on top of the motor to get to it. Then you just unplug the connector and take the screws out, then pull it out and put the new and put the screws back in and plug it back in. Then just put the air filter hose back on the intake.

  • try and replace the throttle position sensor!

  • @FxOxC Yeah thats what I read online. I just went to advance auto parts and picked up a Throttle position sensor. Now Im going to put it on and see if it fixes it. I hope so!

  • @FxOxC I put the new throttle position sensor in it yesterday and It has been idling fine now so I think it fixed the problem.

  • @rockey90 glad to hear the good news!!! =D
