Huh. I'd always misunderstood the quotation "let them eat cake". I always thought it was sort of like "let the peasants enjoy the same luxuries as the nobles". That's what you get for first hearing something when you were 9 and never bothering to look it up since then.
@idiatico The XL in single files were added after the season finished. So the playlist has all the episodes in order, be they regular or XL mixed together, and then the added XL that was obtained at a later date. Otherwise the playlist would have a short episode, and then immediately replay the long.
I always do love how everyone gets a big a applause no mater what the score or whoever loses. Good showmanship and such. Though really, the scores never have mattered anyway. It's all good fun. :D
I love how Rich always has this look on his face when stephen reads his score like "how the hell did they come to that number? these are totally arbetrary."
It annoys me that the cake thing isn't true, because it would have made sense in a strange way. Marie Antoinette was Austrian, and Austria is a mountainous country with a lot of dairy farming, but not much grain production. So when times are tough, people actually do bake cakes - they stretch the flour they need to buy by adding stuff they produce themselves: eggs, milk, butter, whipped cream, fruit...
@stefanmuc2k Interesting point but if peasants had all that rich food they would have sold it in hard economic times to the wealthy because they were so poor instead of eating it themselves. :) Can't you picture them wiping the whipped cream off their fat faces while being evicted for not paying rent? :)
Like "I am not amused," "let them eat cake" is too pat. Real quotes are rambling. This sounds more like a catchphrase created by a pamphlet writer to show the uselessness of the elite.
@IoEstasCedonta Even in these extended episodes, they still cut out some bits. Hence the reason that the final scores never seem to tally with the answers given. But, as paddyc00 says, to worry about the score is to kind of miss the point!
Plus you have to remember that the show is a lot longer irl than you see here/on the tv. So bits they cut out in the end might count towards final score somehow.
Hahah, it's however the fuck Stephen wants to. He gives like -20 to an incorrect boring answer and then +10 for a right but not interesting answer and then random points for being awesome. That's how it works in my brain anyways =)
I do believe you are fairly close. However, I recall an episode where Alan Davies would have been victorious, had he not uttered the words "Randy Ghandi", which carried a forfiet of 100 points (i think?). The forfeits are (as I have empirically noted) are relative; the more obvious the answer, the greater the forfeit. where-as a correct answer receives a benefit of +5 or in some cases +10. I may be wrong..but I don't care...I love this freakin show!!!

He got the statistics totally wrong. In 2007 more than 73% of all traffic was from P2P. For more details see the ipoque Internet Study 2007. I'd say it's a bit less than 10%, when I assume that other P2P networks has the same ratio than bittorrent.
Haha "I lost a week." Didn't hit me till now that Jimmy Carr IS Quagmire.

David Mitchell and Jimmy Carr on QI? No wonder this is one of my favourite episodes. :)

Poor Jimmy. "Gentleman's Special Interest Literature" is really quite creative and yet "P0RN" still pops up in the back.

It's really hard to watch Jonathan Creek after watching QI extensively first. I just can't take him seriously...

I would love for them to do a show with David Mitchell, Rory McGrath, Ben Miller, and of course everyones favorite PhD...
It's ALAN DAVIES!
The sheer mutual nerd wanking among Stephen Fry and the 3 contestants...the observations by Alan alone would make it the best episode ever.

That's not exactly true though, peasants couldn't have sold anything to the wealthy lords, because the lords would have just taken it from them.
