thought I saw it all, till I read about the M/T 427 Hemi that Mickey built. and yeah that was the regular 427 they were talkin bout, not the Cammer.......that was a beast also.
yeah. 657 HP worth. it whallops ANY factory performance aftermarket engine made during that era. Especially considering its displacement... anyone can have a 572 BBC, I want a Cammer 427!
I have a 66 Thunderbird with a 428 that needs to be restored, but I couldn't live with myself if I grenaded the near-priceless numbers matching block, so when I do get the money to restore it I will commit the greatest sin I can and put a brand-new 2011 Ford 5-liter in the car for my hot-rodding and save the 428 for when my days of going too fast are done.
@81broncoman that 428 will whoop the ford 5 liter. cost have the price too. 428 roller cam & edelbrock heads will push 550 HP. put 4.25 stroke and it will be over 600. just saying
The new 5.0 has fuel injection, variable cam timing, 1.4 horsepower per cubic inch, a 7500 RPM redline, and a warranty all for less than 7000 dollars. I may never rebuild another engine ever again.
what happened to cars, they used to all have big horsepower and pavement-pounding torque. these days all car companies seem to care about is having 30mpg and a billion airbags
I know of a group of guys who took the heads of a BOSS 302 cut them and put them on a Ford straight six, put the engine in an altered with only one gear and ran eights. This was in 1967. I saw it spot a 427 Chevelle the whole tree and then cut the Chevy's knees out from under it.
I put a 427 in my '67 Mustang coupe. It was a powerful engine but wouldn't hold a candle to my '66 Fairlane w/ a built 460. Not even close. The 460 is longer, taller, wider, and way heavier, but worth it. A much better engine from the keel up than the FE series.
i have a respectably built 390 in my 68 galaxie, but I want MORE and i have a 1986 460/C6 2wd driveline at my disposal (runs and drives). how hard and how much $ is it to make 500+ hp with the factory iron (truck > E-350 ambulance) heads ported, custom fabbed headers and compression for pump gas? I am running a 3.50 gear ratio.
Take good care of those full sizes American cars, there will never be any new one made. There will only be made micro cars from now on, Now it's the Govenment there decide what size car you going to drive in.
had a 64 merc marauder ; 390 hp, 4 spd . 4.11 gear ; ran 14.40 stock with street tires . a friend has 63 1/2 galaxie 427 /425, 4 spd , 4.30 gears all factory ! runs 12.60 with 9 inch slicks . all steel except tear drop fiberglass hood . hurt some mustang & camaros feelings BAD ! MY MERC 390 BLEW UP ; BUILT a 390 +.040 dynoed 430 horsepower on the ground ; ran 12.8 !
I think I'd like to join the club but I don't see a branch near the Fort Wayne, In area. Have owned my 66 just over 35yrs now(1974) and have quite the story to share!
There was a street version which the average person could buy and a race version for professional racers just like the Chrysler Hemi. The street version did not put out 550hp but it did put out every bit of 425 when it was tuned correctly. It was every bit a strong as the Street Hemi.
This vid implies that Tunnel Port heads existed in 1964, which of course is not true. In '64, there were High Risers and Low Risers. 1967 for the TP's.
64 had tunnel port heads....came in the 64 ford galaxy thunder bolt....a main reason why its soo rare....get yourself a "all about ford FE engines" book, it will tell you the complete history on the 427 and what you could get with it
sorry for the typo...i know that, got a bunch of these ol cars at my dads farm from, galaxies to fairlanes, have a couple 66 mercury comets...im restoring a '66 ford LTD with original 428 4v

Now that '65 Galaxie is making some serious hp to leave like that and must have 4:88 gears or lower. A beast.

...for ford fans everywhere... as long as it is in the USA

IMO, any gears shorter than 3.73 are a waste for cars like this.
