  • The original was written way before Leadbelly! This was originally sung as a field song by enslaved Africans in America. Leadbelly may have added some additional lyrics but the melody goes way back.

  • Beautiful!

  • LOve LOve Love Them*-0

  • I was going to ditto, "The bass is the deal," and then thought, "Shoot, all those women are THE DEAL." That is the plain and simple truth.

  • They don't make music like this anymore! Everything now a machine!

  • Chills...

  • Am soooooo stoked to go see Sweet Honey in Philadelphia on Feb. 20th!

  • I got turned on to these magnificent women...rightly named..Sweet Honey in the Rock..many years ago...I worked for a video distributor...I got a video of a tribute to Lead Belly and Woody Guthrie...this song with these incredible women where on it and sang this song...forever since then...they became a part of my spirtuality....no matter how hard the rock of life seems....inside there's always Honey...Thanks for this post...

  • Beautiful song sung by amazing voices. Brava!

  • This song is soooooo BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!! I wonder what's the deeper meaning to this song :-). Oh God bless them! whereever they are

  • @Bubbleyumizchewi17 when I hear this song, it seems to me to be about women helping women.

  • @Bubbleyumizchewi17 The original song was written by Leadbelly, my father was a huge Leadbelly fan and it is about Leadbelly when he was in prison .My father had very old recordings from Leadbelly singing this song and there are some verses no longer sung; Sylvie brought me water, Sylvie brought me tea, Sylvie brought me everything but she did not bring the jail house key" Sylvie was suppose to help him break out by putting the key in a bucket of water

  • Thanks for producing these videos, these women are amazing in every way, love the message and the music, touches my heart in a wonderful way!

  • I love this! Especially the one doing the low tenor vocals because I could probably 'bass' for an acapella group like that, having a rather low contralto voice. Used to be quite embarrassed about my low voice too and tried to hide it by speaking in a falsetto because I thought I sounded like a boy. Years later, my dad told me I sang in the alto/tenor range, and now I appreciate it more. Listening to this, I am trying to hit the low notes but it is a bit of a struggle lol!

  • O...O...my my..i want to drink this love.....

  • a mind blowing experience definitely shows u dont have to strip to get noticed

  • What a voice ! This a brilliant version. Note the back ground singers. No back ground instruments -- just vocal singeers.

    Splendid !

  • @ErnstBecker This is called Acapella singing-no instruments, just voices. Common in the '50s,usually in doo-wop.Can be heartbreakingly beautiful when done right. And, of course, with the right voices.

  • @Rockinghorserider1 Well said. Having been raised with do wop it strikes a familiar cord.

  • I have LOVED these women since the very first time I saw them when I was a teenager!!!! And they're every little bit as inspirational now, as they were way back then! Love them!

  • Bernice Johnson is a National Treasure ~ not just her Voice, but the underlying Power of her Politics. Albany GA native & veteran of the 1961 Albany Movement that brought forth the tactics that won the first Civil Rights Revolution = creative non-violent mass actions & the Music including "O Freedom" and "We Shall Overcome" as political tools.

  • stupendous voices!! don't need to strip or pole dance or have hi-tech lighting and effects prog. Their music and talent is ALL that is needed - ladies - we are honoured!

  • that has no instrements that real tallent

  • any way i can get this version of the song instead of the one they sell in itunes? the range and octave is different and im liking this version better than the album.

  • Sublime.

  • I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!

  • Dr. Barnwell was my all-state chorus instructor and she is one of the most amazing women i have ever met. Her talent and her wisdom are so inspirational. Sweet honey is absolutely amazing. Well done ladies! thank you :)

  • Glorious.

    Thank you from Canada.

  • She was my allstate choir director. She is easily one of the most charismatic, interesting and kind women I have ever met.

She says on a good day, she can hit a solid low g.

  • I was there also, she really WAS a phenomenal woman. I don't think I've ever felt such strong emotion singing in my life.

  • My grandmother and I sing this to my aunt sylvia

  • These women are truly amazing. A wonderful song

  • Wonderful and that close in more than one way. A far ahead period sounds through by this kind of music which is, surprising for the poor situations those days, is that good to hear and the whole music development has been influencend by.

  • This is absolutely beautiful!

  • Truly beautiul. Love this.

  • Wonderful music. Really beautifull..

  • I love this song so much

  • They look so different now!!!=] they rock!!!

  • Many of them are different now. There have been several changes in singers over the years. Bernice Reagan the founder retired several years ago.

  • The bass singer is the deal!

  • She can hit lower notes than I can :)

  • She's the one and only Isaye Maria Barnwell.

  • How do you desribe Sweet Honey In The Rock? Is their sound folk, gospel, blues, soul, jazz, world, or some other genre? Their voices are in harmony. This is great music, from the ambassadors of an lost art.

  • I would say that they have songs that can be put in all of those categories. Their talents really are not limited at all.

  • You are absolutely right. I have been a fan of Sweet Honey In The Rock, The Persuasions, and The Nylons for years. Don't feel bad, I'm hooked on the Tube also. Check out my favorites and ypu'll see. God Bless, SoulTooSoul
