The republican party for the longest time had been the party of Lincoln, but after the Barry Goldwater campaign and the southern strategy, it became a all white party. The republicans realized that they could take away the south, democrats stronghold, and become a dominate party. Reagan ran on states rights, which black folks hated with good cause, but it did win him and his party elections.

That strategy is now falling apart of course because of changes and maybe in the future the parties will change again. As to MLK jr, no he was not a republican.
