At 1:44 you finish cutting the dado's. Let me just mention that having lost the end of finger doing just what you were doing, that technique is extremely dangerous. You should always use a featherboard and a long push stick. When I was doing it the board bound and suddenly kicked back, causing 2 of the fingers on my left hand to "kiss" the dado blade. A long night in the hospital and surgery the next day put most of it back together, but you don't want this.
hey Steve i have really been moved by your project i mean i have watched this 7 part series like 100 times (no joke) and i really like it so i plan to make a chess board just like it next year when im in a more advanced wood shop class. This year though im makeing the pieces. :)
ive been playing chess at school for yeasr and havent got my own chess board when i wached this vid i made one!!!!! im only 10!!!!!!!!!! (with the help of my dad)
the trees pump toxins into soil and kill surrounding plants... also you should cover your breathing when working with black walnut or other exotic species!!!
Yeah, someone else commented on that too. Maybe that explains why my tomatoes aren't doing as well this year. Doh! Well, live and learn through YouTube!
i've heard using walnut shavings for mulch is a bad thing!!! [something about the way it turns your skin blackish purple, some acid or some such thing]
Walnut has a high iodine content, that's why it turns things greenish brown. There's nothing to be afraid of,iodine is naturally active in the human body. Only iodine sensitive people should watch for the amount of iodine intake. But I have to agree, that's not a great idea to put walnut shavings on the plants, because iodine is not really good for plants :) Naturally nothing grows under a walnut tree :) Anyway, these vids are awesome!!Serious precision and craftsmanship Steve! :)
I wish you'd make a chess board that is thick solid wood (the playing surface, maybe 3/4 inch) and also with various veneers on it, in a 'layered cake' formation , which go up to the playing surface- without the bit for the pieces. With either a felt bottom or a nice wooden finish with leather pads. I have seen the finished product on a few sites but would really like to see how its done. Thanks for your videos
Great project! question on the cross braces INSIDE the case. Why are they notched on the end? It looks like the lower part of the rabet is flush with the side of the case, but the top of the brace looks higher than the sides of the case? If this is so, why? and how high above the side does the notch need to be.
Thanks for responding. I love your videos... this one and the one on the jewelry box are great.
The top grid (the squares) sit in a rabbet on the frame. So the 3/4" frame supports the 1/4" top, leaving a 1/2" recessed area on the underside. Only the edge frame of the top assembly (see 5:27) sets on the sides of the case.
So the notch IS flush with the sides and the center of the brace is higher to fit into the recessed underside of the top.

That looks like such a dangerous machine!! Watch your fingers, dude!
In here that machine would be illegal! (no safety shields)
