Never really cared for PF post 1973, but always had respect for Guy Pratt. Seen him play in my hometown with Bryan Ferry, Chris Spedding and Andy Newmark.
I myself, a guitarist first, had a great mentor who taught me to learn as many instruments as possible in order to stay employed and right he was... in last 10 years played many more bass gigs that guitar ones, and if you can be genre versital, then you really can work much more... from choirs to bands to singer songwriters, everyone needs a solid bass to hold it all down. Now off for another bass audition...
Hahaha, that really is how everyone becomes a bassist... Even back in the day.... I just started playing bass a year ago after playing guitar for two..... I started because we needed a bassist, and I thought I may like it more.... I find it MUCH more fun than guitar, and I do like the fact that it's such a big part without ACTUALLY being a big part in the overall structure.
@PanekPL The video description only says he's Pink Floyd's bassist. Which he is. Waters opted out, declaring Floyd a "spent force". I love Waters' work with Floyd, but Pratt did more than enough as their bassist to earn a place in Pink Floyd.
I can see where Guy is coming from, totally. I was a little different though. I chose bass over everything else. I was always fascinated with the bass ever since listening to Geddy Lee when I was fairly young. I also think I was drawn to it because, like Guy said, the bass player is practically the underdog of the band in most genres and I usually find myself rooting for the underdog. Ever since I bought my first bass, A Geddy Lee sig Fender Jazz Bass, I've been loving it more every day.
This guy is the best. He tells the world the truth about the bass.
I didn't want to be a bassist either. i wanted to be a drummer. But instead I got a bass, and though I was somewhat disappointed then, half a year later I am extremely satisfied I'm playing one. I fell in love with the sound and everything. This guy sums up all my feelings.
It's great that Guy is always giving his time giving back to the fans, its like the musical loop is completed back to the ordinary man and the cycle begins anew.
nice to hear from a professional bass player who has a really grounded concept of what bass playing is all about. Too many frustrated guitarists out there trying to make a point, and trying to make the bass a lead instrument, which it isnt. I played/play the bass and, for me, Guy has it spot on.
I started playing bass about 3 years ago, mostly playing along with my itunes in my room by myself. I only just recently started jamming with people, and I've received some really nice complements on my playing. I can tell when I'm doing my job because everyone else playing locks in and the groove gets super tight.
Bass is about feeling the music, and real musicians will recognize that and appreciate what you do when you do it well!
Lad. I learned to play bass watching this fella. I would like to say I'm now as successful a bassist as he is but I'm quite a bad loser who doesn't play bass anymore. Nevermind eh?
He's a great bass player and I think he's considerably better than Roger Waters, however, I love Water's writing. That's so true what Pratt said about bassists being less ego ermm... based. Q: How many lead guitarists does it take to change a light bulb? A: 10. 1 to change it and 9 to say I could have done it better. I played lead for 10 years and am now playing bass and I've gotta' say it's fun having a laugh at how big headed lead guitarists really are- in general.
Go and see hs show - my bass and other animals (or read the book) which is brilliant -
He is one of the finest bass players you will ever see - not a flash t**t who just shows off.He plays for the better of the music - sympathetic musical and he can play in just about any style and not only that does it with humor and humility.
You don't get to play for Pink Floyd, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Page and Plant, roxy music (ok there was jimmy Nail too) without being hugely respected.
So I guess you're saying that your perfect bassist is someone who stays perfectly still, never makes a joke, and isn't British? You must have a fun circle of friends.
Say what you will about Guy, but he's a fine bassist with a long distinguished career ( Floyd / Roxy Music / Madonna / Stephen Duffy / Icehouse etc etc etc ). And how many of you would love to have a burgundy mist 64 J-Bass....the answer is just about everyone !
hey seeeker.. please try and get over it if you can. you clearly have a way to go but posting comments about your problem with the british on youtube is a start.. i guess.
In P.U.L.S.E. everybody is standing stony-still and playing their instruments, only Guy and Gary Wallis show signs of life. And awesome vocals on Run Like Hell...
I should prepaid 4 all lessons soon. Guy was allready inspired me to start playin Bass, long time ago, in the middle of war @ 1992 when i was for the first time hear Floyd, at age o 16.

He is right, 'except for the 'not being heard thing'. That depends on what style of music you play.

The video description is wrong. Roger Waters is Pink Floyd's bassist, this is a replacement they hired.
PanekPL 1 year ago
@PanekPL The video description only says he's Pink Floyd's bassist. Which he is. Waters opted out, declaring Floyd a "spent force". I love Waters' work with Floyd, but Pratt did more than enough as their bassist to earn a place in Pink Floyd.
hawkeye40222 1 year ago
@PanekPL Now then...The description was correct wasn't it? Who was the bass player with Pink Floyd when this was posted?
As much as you may not like it:
1. Roger left - it was in all of the papers, he made a bit of a song and dance about it. I'm sure you saw it.
2. Guy came in. He is a very good bassist.
These are just facts.
Now, dry your eyes princess.
BTW, I admire Roger greatly but you're just being pedantic for the sake of it and coming across as a tad bitter.
The music is what matters.

When the hell did Pratt become a Pink Floyd-member?! OK, he played at the PULSE and DSOT tours, but he's still not a member...
The only members are David Gilmour and Nick Mason.
R.I.P. Richard Wright....

Ok Ok he was an honorary member :) Wasn't he with them tho for about 20 years and bloody Nora he's one of the nicest people I've ever met.
