In my opinion the song loses all its peculiarity in English. Nothing against the singers, they sing quite well, it's just.. the german version gave me chills; this one leaves me indifferent.
When I first watched the Die Schatten werden länger (The original German version) I thought it was about two guys who loved eachother but couldn't be together.... xD
>.< This is probably just me being picky, but I didn't like Rudolph's second verse about the helmsman being blind and not hearing him. First off, it doesn't make much sense and second off, it doesn't flow right. I also would have preferred the wording "The shades of night are growing" so it was closer to the original. Other than that, it was kind of awesome, though.
Death sings well, but he doesn't have that "edgy" tone that the original had.
I suppose after time I'll grow to like this version. When this song is stuck in my head, though, it will always be the german version. The German version just sounds darker/better on the ear.
@lachilein Actually, der Tod disguises himself as Rudolf's lover, Mary Vetsera (hence the dress) to seduce him and get him to kill himself so he can take his soul and ultimiately drive Elisabeth closer the edge...in the Essen producion, der Tod never wears the dress in the Mayerling sequennce so, essentially, Rudolf gets kissed by man (although originally he was supposed be androgynous and genderless, something seems have been dropped in most of the recent productions)..
@pat19821010 I can imagine the voice reminds of Uwe Kröger for anyone. However, it has nothing to do with Maté Kamaras, since he's not the one you hear singing. He's just in the video.
And beside that... I disagree with you that Uwe and Maté sound alike. I think they're both very good, but also very different.
I think the German singers have much better voices to be honest. I have a multitude of problems with the voices chosen for American musicals. There's a nasal quality that is less than pleasant. But maybe that's just me.
I've been looking over so many different lyrics and translations for Die Shatten Werden Langer, its been driving me insane!

Music and voices are FAR better in the german version, that's true... but... the english text really gets me, because it perfectly fits Rudolph's desperation and the endtime-feeling that should be brought to the audience, as mentioned in another song. Great Job, not for music and singing, but for the text... and the last time the chorus plays is as good in german as in english. I love both versions the same.
I always dreamed of hearing or possibly seeing Elisabeth performed in english (because lets face it, that's the only way it could be performed and do well in America)
I don't know a word of German and yet Elisabeth is one of my favorite musicals. It's very hard that I don't know any German so I can't understand any of it but I would rather read along with an English translated libretto than actaully listen to it in English...does anyone know if such a thing exsists?
I think that the german version is better. But I think that there is potential if you tweek the lyrics and different singers, they're not that strong! And more emotion!
I don't like the English version. English is my favorite language (I'm Dutch), but this musical should not be translated. In German and Dutch this musical sounds incredible (maybe because Dutch and German are such alike), but this production isn't made to be English, if you ask me.

oh and just throwing this out there does anyone know where i can watch the play with english subtitles? Thanks!
I don't agree that the show shouldn't be translated into English. The language itself should be fine for the show, especially since it's another Germanic language. I do agree with you, though, that the German and Dutch lyrics and performances are much, much better than this one. This is a bad translation, and the way they add a pop element to this performance of the song just annoys me. I would love to see Elisabeth in English as long as it was translated better and kept closer to the original.
Why does youtube not put replies to comments right after what they're responding to anymore? Aargh! Sorry, my last comment was a response to giesje91.
i agree that the play shouldn't be translated, just listening to this song makes me cringe but if they don't translate it then it won't be shown in North America and England which is a pitty because i would love to actually watch the play, i would prefer to watch it in german because if it's translated it seems to lose some of it's quallities.

:-) Aber jede Sprache hat ihre eigene Magie die auch bei diesem Lied zum Vorschein kommt... och nö...it's sounds awful in eglish...try out the german version....and the lyrics are really bad translatetd....and by the way....by the way....the singers are really good....but i prefer mate (´teh player of teh death in the clip) or uwe kröger^^
Who sings Rudolf? He sounds like Kröger^^...wonderful voices the both^^
The shades of night are growing. The future has been bought and sold. The doomsday horns are blowing While they're dancing round a cup of gold. The shades of night are growing. It is five to twelve, our time is getting old. Have the gods ran out of kindness? Our ship has lost direction. Is the helmsman struck with blindness? He does not even hear me. On the black sky, scarlet letters You can read; they spell disaster. Put your horse to waiting fetters.
It's driving me insane! The shades of night are growing, As man becomes a beast of prey. We don't know where we're going, But we're going faster every day. The shades of night are growing; It is five to twelve, our chances melt away. It's all up to you. So do what you have to do. Dare take heart, to be a rebel! Rebel?

@nennia I think, it's because in the german version theres the hard "t" which sounds more distinctive and stresses the pronounciation.
The english "d" (of shades) is more soft and because of that, the rhythm is getting lost a little bit.

och nö...it's sounds awful in eglish...try out the german version....and the lyrics are really bad translatetd....and by the way....by the way....the singers are really good....but i prefer mate (´teh player of teh death in the clip) or uwe kröger^^
Who sings Rudolf? He sounds like Kröger^^...wonderful voices the both^^

Now this is the right occasion
For a private conversation.
You know me. Yes, you know me.
Since your childhood, we're befriended,
And our friendship hasn't ended.
I promised not to leave you.
I call you in desperation
Every time this nightmare haunts me,
When it feels like suffocation.
You need me, here I am!

Thank you so much for this English version without the Sailor Moon-video!
Máté Kamarás is such a handsome Death, and also an incredibly good singer :D
