The dog is very sweet. I do have two maltese and have learned how to groom properly. My guess is you are certainly not neglecting the coat but whatever products you are using is adding to that stringy look. perhaps switch products?
Maltese hair is really a time and a half when long. its painful to both a new owner and the dog when your learning how to groom them with all the tangles.. If there just normal house pets its best to get a pet groomer or yourself if your brave to keep there hair in the puppy cut style. its more manageable this way and its a painstaking task .

@rabbit12021 His hair just needed to be combed here, that's why he looks "stringy" is all. It doesn't take much for him to look this way. He looks like you're saying for about a day after he's bathed and then he's stringy again. He just plays a lot. The smooth looking dogs get groomed a lot and are in conditions where they are shown.

@lovesmaltese yes NEVER go to a pet store. always adopt or go to a shelter. pet stores get their puppies from puppy mills. type in puppy mills right here on youtube and see what happens. the offspring produced at those mills always have some type of health problems like liver shunts, heart murmur, damaged body parts, to name a few. and yes you can find purebred maltese (not puppies of course) that would love to be your companion.
That's an adorable little clip... My malti loves to roll her treats under her back before she eats them. She also does the same with her toys... always rolling around on them! Yours is as energetic as mine. Very cute little boy you have there :-)

WTH what are you talking about i have a pure white maltese that i bought from a breeder for 2 thousand dollars . i keep his hair short in order to avoid dread locks!!!! his hair grows very long but the upkeep is impossible if you dont brush them 2 a day they get knotted so some people keep their malteses with short hair and its called a puppy cut. the other response didnt make sense pure breeds can have long or short hair THE SHORT HAIR HAPPENS AFTER ITS CUT THAT WAY AND IT WILL GROW LONG again

its normally hyper or its not.. my maltese is hyper as hell 24/7 and its always been that way.. i didnt do a thing lol. get it toys and stuff. or take it outside alot ..

Use Angel Eyes, or get a Stainless bowl and use filtered water. Also diet plays a key role. My Maltese drinks water from the faucet which has a britta filter and eats NV Raw food. Not one tear stain. When I rescued her, her entire face was stained.
Actually you should be carefull letting him jump down by himself like that.

depends if they are pure breed or not. pure ones have long hair, and they are very expensive..mixed ones have weird color nose, short hair...

Maltese are always pure white. Yorkshire Terriers have much different coloring. :o)
