This posting starts too late and ends too early. It doesn't include the beginning sequence with Annelle and, unfortunately, cuts off the best part at the end. "M'lynne, you just missed a chance of a lifetime! Half of Chiquipinn Parish would give their eyeteeth to take a whack at Weeza!" And McLaine's "pig from hell" and not-so-gentile-gesture cap off the scene perfectly! REAL shame this scene cuts it off!
High melodrama at its finest....and no one has ever done it better than Ms Fields. A bravura performance. Funny that Shirley is in this scene when she herself gave a similar daughter-death meltdown scene in "Terms" (which pre-dates this). Though, IMO, it isn't as strong. But go figure, Shirley won the Oscar for it. Sally didn't. Probably because Sally was type cast for scenes like this in "Norma Rae" she has a nice meltdown scene...and in "Cybil", forget about it, that whole movie is a meltdown
And it turned on a dime to become one of the funniest. I did love how M'Lynn let it all go. Everyone should vent their grief instead of putting it away.
She is the one

I'm a guy and my name is Shelby. Thanks to this movie, it's more commonly a woman's name now. But I was named after the Mustang, not Julia Roberts :P

I recognize Daryll Hannah, Dolly Parton, Sally Field but I don't recognize Julia Roberts and whoever else is in this scene.

@roosevelthighschool You know Julia Roberts is the person that is DEAD in this scene right? What about Shirley? Really?

Sally Field is the best Hollywood actress of all time. Did she win an award for this movie?

It's M'Lynn not Meline and the quality of this video sucks.

I love watching this movie and I think this is one of Sally Field's best work. She is one of my most favorite actresses of all time.
