\Hi.... I am using two mediums now: (1) GALKYD LITE made by Gamblin, and (2) Winsor & Newton's DRYING LINSEED OIL mixed 50/50 with WALNUT OIL. Both of these medium dry fairly quickly, with less yellowing over time.

    \

\With the water-mixable oils, I used W&N's water mixable linseed oil, but it dries VERY slowly.

    I hope this helps,

    \

  • @57johns Thank you for the kind comments. I do have one oil pastel demo up here at

search youtube: "Gary Garrett Oil Pastel"

Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave kind comments... :-) gg

  • Very nice to watch Gary, is the music Jerry Douglas? if not can you tell me who please,,,,

  • @cmgill2 --- The wonderful music is Victor Wooten from the "Palmestry 2007" CD entitled "Us 2" which can be purchased and downloaded at musicmp3.ru

  • @GaryGarrett If it is Victor Wooten then it is Gerry Douglas on the Dobro, it's well worth giving him a listen in his own right,,, thank you for the info

  • best three minutes of my day

  • Very nice! It didn't occur to me at first that you were using water soluble oils. Can I get your opinion of those compared to using acrylics? Pros and cons, etc?

  • I noticed your response is 1 year ago but I'm going to answer your question anyways in case you're still curious or for anyone that needed an answer.

I haven't personally used any water mixable oils yet but from what I can see the color choices aren't as big as oils itself. Also, the colors don't seem to be as vibrant. But, if you're eco-friendly, I would highly recommend it as you don't need harmful thinners. All you need is water and soap to clean it. Dry time is faster than oil too.

  • Great job,I would like to know,such a painting,how long does it take?And what is ° Winsor & Newton Water Mixable Oil Colours°?water mixable,water mixable with oil colours?how does it work?Thank you,Gary!

  • They have the look and feel of oils, but they thin in water and rinse your brushes in water. They use special lenseed oils and safflower olis to achieve the compatability with water. They also dry in 2-3 days vs. 2-3 weeks with regualr oils. You can mix them with any oil painting products out there, but that increases their drying times. They will not mix with acrylics. There are some fast-drying mediums you can use with them to allow them to dry overnight. Thanks for watching.

  • Thank you,Gary.

  • well, I'll tell you...if your construction skills are anything like your painting skills, you can come over and help me rebuild the barn here anytime!

    Nice job. Gary!

  • Glad to help.. the distance may be a bit much. Having mini horses here, I have built several barns which have weathered several hurricanes (Francis, Ivan, etc. and the current Tropical Storm Fay passing over us right now) but it would be fun to run up north to help you. Thanks for watching... loved that ferengi apple sauce!!

  • Gary, I love your technique when painting. I really do hope to one day be half as good as you.

  • Hi again, you have a good eye and can translate what you see to your canvas or paper. There are many more on YouTube who are better than me and sometime soon I imagine I will be learning things from you. Keep painting and keep up your good work. Thanks for watching.

  • Hey Gary, do you have an endorsement gig going with W&N now?...lol...if not, You Should Have!!!

...nice piece you have there!..you cant go wrong working with your basic earth tones..

will those colors blend with Acrylics?? ...I might want to try some..(Hear that Windsor and Newton?)

you should open a Vimeo channel...I'd love to watch your vids in Higher Def

  • Thank You for your nice comment! No endorsement gig, just wanted those folks curious about these paints to be able to easily find these demos using them. I don't think they mix with acrylics... maybe that should be my next experiment. They ARE REAL OILs, and they don't mention mixing with acrylics in the brochure. I do know that the GOLDEN'S acylics have a similar long drying times to the water mix oils, and they ARE acrylics. But I have not found the Golden's locally yet. THANKS FOR WATCHING

  • Your color schemes are a very essential ingredient to the scenery in your artwork. Great job. 5+ stars.

  • Thank you. I was carrying a paintbox of 50 or so acrylic on plein air trips. The weight of those and all else necessary was too much... so trying to lighten my load. My wife gave me a half box french plein air style easel for my B-day, so I am attempting to use only the colors I can get into it... a major change for me... but I hope, for the better.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment.

  • totally love love love it!!!! 10 stars!!

  • Thanks Retta, this was a simple challenge but it proved that I needed the Thalo green. Thanks for taking the time to leave such a wonderful comment.

  • You can never go wrong with Winsor & Newton. Great job! Love everything you do. Looking forward to sharing my own watercolor techniques here on youtube. (Using Winsor & Newton of course)
