I don't think so. I have a 2008 Silverado with the 5.3 V-8 in it. I cut the muffler off and out dual 6 inch stacks on her, and the mileage got a lil better. Nothing to brag about. I picked up 2 miles extra.

It's not my style though, but the truck sounds wicked going through the revs but when he lets off, a muffler would certainly help. Even a small glasspack to dampen some of the higher frequencies.

Backpressure is not the issue. it's exhaust gas velocity! (EGV) without the proper EGV, the scavenging effect is almost lost. When the exhaust rushes out of the cylinder when the valve opens, it creates a vacuum of air behind it, which accelerates the intake charge into the cylinder. With a bigger exhaust you lose velocity (much like trying to drink pepsi through a garden hose) but increase volume. It's usually the engine tuning that creates this apparent power loss. not lack of "backpressure"
