Man such a dope song, how many new fake ass rappers would give a tribute to Roger Troutman? DJ Quik kept it true with the same sound. Unlike all these fucks today! He's one of the best in my book..
Sometimes when I listen to this cut, I wonder if DJ Quik suprised the Troutman family by performing this song live at the family dinner after the funeral..
Could you imagine all the deep emotions of sadness, and tears of pain, being overcome by shock, joy, and utter disbelief...
I know hearing this song, at that particular time, would only acknowledge that Roger's Legacy and Music is not lost, but lives on thru a real musician

Roger was down to earth and always willing to share his knowledge to any person who asked. I was a young drummer in Dayton at the time and jazz was my preference, but you couldn't help but get caught up in the Funk scene in Dayon at the time because of all the bands there. This was before all the computer enhancements and you had REAL musicians. Roger was an excellent guitarists and was very diverse, but of course he too loved the funk scene. He showed me the ropes and my skill grew!!!
Quik most definately did Roger right...he's the only one whoz doing the talk box right...Quik learned from the man(Roger Troutman )himself. R.I.P. Mr. Troutman
@Zmw192 nope! - no one does! never ever ever ever mention auto-tune and talkbox in the same sentence, unless it's too bash how fake auto-tune is compared to the box! - thats like comparing bush and christ man!

Yo lik no bullshit i wish quik can mak another roger's groove lik the way he makes his quik's groove that roger's groove is tight very chill, much respect to roger & quik.
Keepin' the memory alive. I must admit to getting a bit misty eyed whenever I hear this track. Music lost a true pioneer the day Roger died, but his music will live on... long after the bland shit that passes for R&B these days dies out. R.I.P. Roger.
Quik is so genuinely melodic in his music. So soulful. And that line to Eiht is still the greatest battle line of all time! Respect to Quik, RIP to Mr. Troutman!
It always seems that dj quik is a different person when he is on the talk box. Like this side of him comes out that in rap you rarely or never get to see. You really have to know Quik's music to really know it's him. It's just raw talent. I think that's why he hasn't been as active in the game as before. His talent is too much just to be unappreciative towards it. The public is just not ready for it and I think he sees it like that. Pearls before swine...
@Jesus1229 I agree. Quik needs to get out of hip hop and move to a genre like smooth jazz or funk or r&b. He's too talented to be wasting it in hip hop where the majority of fans have little to no appreciation for real quality music.
@jgk381 I agree. I'm over "Hip Hop" like Nas said, it's dead. It's not like it used to be.. these "artist" of today with the exception of some, just plain and simply aren't cutting it. I'm more into R&B and music with emotion
MAN!!!!!!!! The way this sounds it really upsets you that he is so underrated when it comes to producing, I use to sit on my prison bunk and jus fly away off this groove for Roger.........
I have not heard the entire album, but the few tracks I did hear was dope. I am going to pock it up today along with Maxwell's album. Quik is like a second degree black belt with this music shit, the older he gets the better he gets. He can get into his zone quickly and put out amazing albums in no time.
DJ Quik is one of the best producers of all time in music history, not just hip hop. His sonic ability is out of this world. R.I.P. Roger Troutman. (Quik is killing T-Pain on the talk box with this record)
Great point bro, I guess I was just thinking about the sonic quality of quiks productions and him freaking that style. plus I heard T-Pain say no one was repping Roger Troutman like him and quik did this before T-Pain got in the game. The talkbox seems more difficult to master then Autotune though.
Lol, why don't more people know that? Talkbox and Autotune are really different. Autotune just fixes pitch problems. The Talkbox is something where you need to put a tube in you mouth, sing into it, all why playing a little keyboard to the tune you want to come out. That take tremendous talent. Autotune is exactly what it's named... AUTOtune. Plus they sound different.
I love this track. Quik is one the only REAL composers left in the hip hop industry.
What I mean is that he seems to have an advance knowledge in sound design and also the enginering aspect of music production. He not only creates a dope beat but he also creates a sonic evironment to where the vocals and instruments occupy the correct space within the record so that it can sound clear but grimmy or soulful if he wants it to. But this is just my oppinion of his work. You should check out SCRATCH magazine's article on him, it can most likely explain the point I am trying to make.
yea i got u now! Quik is one of the few who's perfection in his music comes within the mixing parts of it, and that wat seperates him from other producers is that he could "show off wit his production abilites" in his albums (for example lik all the Quik's Grooves hes got over the years) And especially when it comes to the newer sound he perfects that easily (wit new technology etc.) did u check out BlaQKout w/Kurupt? DAMN he did that lik in 4-5 months only...
I dig all of Quik's grooves...but this is the one that sends me into some of my deepest modes of thought and meditation. As someone that was in band from almost 5th grade, I can tell Quik has a deeprooted appreciation for live instruments much the same way as I do. This type of style set Quik apart from the rest of those in Music Production. The guys very very very underappreciated in the game.
i like diz roger's groove......... much respect 2 dj quik 4 deciated dis one 2 roger troutman................ r.i.p. roger troutman we miss u so much da first singer who started da robot voice............
Quik is the only one who gives respect. As soon as RRoger died, Cher came out with that "believe in love" shit and it made me want to cry that the man's legacy was being tarnished already and biters were in the midst...waiting. No one else even does it right. By the way, quik is hiphop's best producer. The way he layers his beats is comparable 2 none other than Organized noise. Dre, Preem, depend on samples 4 the majority of their work. Try 2 count the instruments this brother uses in one song.
yea i had to explain to all da kids in my school a million times i guess we gotta explain here too,its autotune that tpain uses it takes no actual talent y do u think wayne is using it now
T-Pain doesn't play the talk box man.....He uses a vocal effect in an audio program(Autotune)...I have both Autotune and a talkbox, and autotune is the easiest thing to use, but there is still some technique to it, but no keyboard just a regular microphone...You play all the keys on a keyboard for a talkbox, and the plastic tube subs in for the user's vocal chords...
That's real, I get that same feelin' everytime I hear this. I get all choked up. I grew up on Zapp and Roger, and I still hate the way Roger passed. He was a legend and an originator of a lot of the styles in West Coast hip-hop. R.I.P.
This song shows how incredibly talented DJ Quik is. Gave me the Chills when I first heard this back when it first came out! Amazing! RIP Mr Troutman! Thanks for the perfect tribute Quik!
CCorrection> I don't want to say ROGER troutman built the talk box....thats sketchy..I can say he was the first artist to fully incoporate the sound and technology of the talk box into R&B and rap. Had a lot of success with this organic sound. Roger worked with Quik, Dre, 2Pac and a host of R&B artist. Saw him for the last time In Kansas City, he was off the freaking meter!!!! A showman and originator... Killed by a family memember in a petty dispute. RIP MR.Troutman and thx for the music!
Sorry I was saying Zapp is still out there doing there thing. I saw them not to long ago and Roger would be very proud of his brother's and the rest of the band. If you get a chance to see them do it you won't be disappointed.
Hay my man this is the best music on the fu...ing earth and I been jamming my brother stuff from the beging and always will 1 luv quick........

y would a self respecting man know aobut t pains business stop defending a queer
TonySmallz 2 years ago
yea i had to explain to all da kids in my school a million times i guess we gotta explain here too,its autotune that tpain uses it takes no actual talent y do u think wayne is using it now
MGSmokedout 2 years ago 2
t pain can still sing without tho trust i think he snd betta without it
dunttesteazy 2 years ago
T-Pain doesn't play the talk box man.....He uses a vocal effect in an audio program(Autotune)...I have both Autotune and a talkbox, and autotune is the easiest thing to use, but there is still some technique to it, but no keyboard just a regular microphone...You play all the keys on a keyboard for a talkbox, and the plastic tube subs in for the user's vocal chords...
eideelliott 2 years ago 4
exactly.. autotune is ridicilous.. if you can get good production behind you, you may as well cash in with the autotune right now hahaha
