"They (the old cars) contained a lot of weird things: . . . water radiator, water hoses, water pumps, water. Not this one. The rear engine is air cooled. Hence it needs no water but just fresh air."
The concept is still simple and brilliant. For some reasons at one point VW decided to built such weird cars by themselves.
@dressshoeguy The old Beetle is the product of genuine human genius and built to Der Fuhrer's specs for a quality affordable car for the workers. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Heinz Nordhoff, Adolph Hitler. The Beetle's sires can be named.
The Smart is a rolling buttplug and built to short-term frivolous market appetites. The product of nameless yuppies who secretly hate cars. It caters to people who are entirely too-well adjusted to our sick culture and feel this need to adore something truly ugly.
@InfiniteMushroom I agree with you that the Beetle is a product of human genius even if one of the forefathers of the beetle was a well known nazi and for some hateful things he as done i am not at the liberty to discuss at this time. The car has truly achieved a cult status like no other. I do disagree with the statement that the Smart is a rolling butt plug. It is the only known car to be displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city, and still be in production.
@dressshoeguy I don't doubt you with regard to the Smart car being in the Metro Museum of Art. Some things just leave me hanging my head in amazement...
Now I know how to properly articulate the hatred I have for that piece of junk. I thank you.
I also agree 100% about your comments about the VW Typ 1. It's a miracle of human genius...Dr. Porsche's, most specifically.
I have a little pool of cash that is starting to grow. My mission? Buy the cleanest Super Beetle (w/the 4-speed, natch) that I can find. Preferably in yellow or orange.
@SPQRImperator WELCOME to the venerable fraternity of air-cooled VW owners, when the day comes!
I have a nice '76 standard Beetle and wouldn't mind a hardtop Super!
A word of advice when shopping for Fat Chicks... those cars are sensitive to front end shimmies. Idler arm bushings are frequently the culprit. Hopefully, you'll be dealing with a mechanically-inclined seller who has already R&R'd ALL the front end bushings. If not, just price the job into the sale, buy the car and get it done.
@InfiniteMushroom I've heard all about the Super's (Fat Chick's) front end weakness.
But having looked at the front end, it, like everything else on air-cooled VWs, is very straightforward. If it's not done at sale time, I'll either move on, or lowball the offer accordingly as you've said.
The commercial is a metaphor- the Volkswagen came out in the fifties based on fifties thinking and applied design. The other European car makers had been in the industry longer, but their cars are based on outdated thinking, outdated design principles of the yesteryear.
The whole thing just means that Volkswagens are designed more modern, so they are cheaper, more reliable, and more practical than other European cars.
Geez, I know! It sounds like a cat purring. The other day i was sittin outside with a friend, and i heard the purring, i was like " That sounds like a VW". sure enough, a beetle came around the corner!
Cat purring? I haven't heard a VW engine in ages but my family's 68' Volvo sounds just like a Singer sewing machine. I don't know what the Swedes were thinking.
Yeah, a B18 B. Insanely reliable as you said, but even more impressive is the fact that it gets 35mpg just like a BRAND NEW Honda Civic and 1968 was the first year Volvos were fitted with emission control systems (very far ahead of their day).
@beetlejuice150 What is the cause of that particular "poto poto poto poto" sound a Beetle makes? I have tried to find about it but not to much avail..

Now why could those people who distribute the Smart for two see these ads. They would work so well for the car, they did for the Beetle

actually i get it now. I read the caption to the right. "VW admits it started late. But that is why it is so much ahead of its time! "

well
thats how most cars were like first. they had loads of weird things in them: cardan shafts, front engines etc.
most cars are still built like that today
this one not
its got a rear engine, close to the drive wheels.
it doesnt need a cardan shaft
its air cooled
every wheel is attached seperately
this car doesnt need coil or coach springs
the beetle started way later than the others. thats why its leading

It says, that because it is newer, it's more modern. It's ridiculous, to compair a 1950s car to 1920s cars, isn't it ?

Yes, old Volvos can sound like sewing machines. Is it a B18 engine? They are extremely reliable!
