The concept is still simple and brilliant. For some reasons at one point VW decided to built such weird cars by themselves.

The Smart is a rolling buttplug and built to short-term frivolous market appetites. The product of nameless yuppies who secretly hate cars. It caters to people who are entirely too-well adjusted to our sick culture and feel this need to adore something truly ugly.

@InfiniteMushroom I agree with you that the Beetle is a product of human genius even if one of the forefathers of the beetle was a well known nazi and for some hateful things he as done i am not at the liberty to discuss at this time. The car has truly achieved a cult status like no other. I do disagree with the statement that the Smart is a rolling butt plug. It is the only known car to be displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York city, and still be in production.

I also agree 100% about your comments about the VW Typ 1. It's a miracle of human genius...Dr. Porsche's, most specifically.

I have a little pool of cash that is starting to grow. My mission? Buy the cleanest Super Beetle (w/the 4-speed, natch) that I can find. Preferably in yellow or orange.

I will own an air-cooled VW, oh yes I will.

I have a nice '76 standard Beetle and wouldn't mind a hardtop Super!

A word of advice when shopping for Fat Chicks... those cars are sensitive to front end shimmies. Idler arm bushings are frequently the culprit. Hopefully, you'll be dealing with a mechanically-inclined seller who has already R&R'd ALL the front end bushings. If not, just price the job into the sale, buy the car and get it done.

But having looked at the front end, it, like everything else on air-cooled VWs, is very straightforward. If it's not done at sale time, I'll either move on, or lowball the offer accordingly as you've said.

thats how most cars were like first. they had loads of weird things in them: cardan shafts, front engines etc.

most cars are still built like that today

The commercial is a metaphor- the Volkswagen came out in the fifties based on fifties thinking and applied design. The other European car makers had been in the industry longer, but their cars are based on outdated thinking, outdated design principles of the yesteryear.

The whole thing just means that Volkswagens are designed more modern, so they are cheaper, more reliable, and more practical than other European cars.

Yeah, a B18 B. Insanely reliable as you said, but even more impressive is the fact that it gets 35mpg just like a BRAND NEW Honda Civic and 1968 was the first year Volvos were fitted with emission control systems (very far ahead of their day).
