I fell in love with this video just about exactly a year ago while about to come back stateside after living in China. I don't remember the days in Beijing at the end, I only remember sitting in my hostel trying to figure out that bass solo on my guit fiddle (except I had crappy speakers and didn't realize it was out of sync so i learned something wholly different). Thank you, uploader, nobody will ever be able to take it away from me.
1627, glad you enjoyed Sam. A great player, both bass and cello. Got to see him with OP live as I did with Ray. Not knocking Sam, but OP's arrangements were very difficult for him. NHOP was technically up to the task and he was so lyrical. Love'd Sam with Cannonball's 6tet. Best regards.
Sam was fantastic with Cannonball, but never fell in place with Oscar. NHOP was his next great bassist, but Ray and Ed were his perfect trio. Get those recording while they are still available.
I completely disagree, I thought Sam Jones was GREAT for Oscar. He had the same rhythmic concept as Ray Brown did, with all his drops and melodic basslines.
Sam Jones (I am a bassplayer) somehow became my most favourite even though Ray Brown was my
mentor.Sam "cooked and burned".
And my dear friend Bobby Durham who left us so young (71) last week was and always will be always one of my most favourite drommers - next to Jimmy Cobb. This trio was awesome.
Amen to that! Sam Jones could swing up somethin' terribul... I remember reading an article where Oscar said something to the effect that this trio was his favorite one! (don't quote me on that;-))
if you like this you should check out "Hello Herbie" (w/ Herb Ellis of course)
Glad to have met you in real life. It was one of the greatest moments of my life to shake your hand and talk to you. Im sure you are jammin´ it up with the other jazz-cats in jam-session-heaven!
Could someone please post some sort of chord change chart for this beautiful tune? Ever since I saw NHOP and RB play it with Oscar, I have been searching, to no avail. Why don't I transcribe? lazy.
"You look good to me". The gentleman at the bass is Sam Jones. For me it's a glorious period for Oscar at many levels: virtuoso technique, impeccable swing, imagination, grace, power,...
Is any more of this video available? Can a DVD be bought somehow?

The World is a much better place for having "Oscar" in it. His playing is unmatched. Perfection on 88 keys!

Oscar didn't write the tune.. He said to Andre Previn (also uploaded) that a friend of Ray Brown wrote the tune.

thanks for update :-) I just remeber OP saying at the concert that it is Mr. Jones who wrote the song - one never knows :-)

No it was Clement Wells.
Vandal18 11 months ago
no the song is composed by Oscar Peterson, and he recorded and performed it a lot during the past 63 years.
first recording: on the LP "We get requests" (1964)
other great versions
"At Salle Pleyel" (1975)
And the Bassists at Montreux (1977)
Nigerian Marketplace (1981)
post-stroke-recording:
Oscar in Paris (1996)
