Really nice lesson this one, I just bought and watched his DVD "Understanding Chord Progressions" where an older Fred is teaching the same lesson. Such a cool thing to know about the chords to fill in between an otherwise very simple chord structure.
Study the simple C major scale (only white notes on the piano). Understand how the whole and half steps work in the scale. Then look at the G major scale. Both of these are also known as the Ionion Mode...same thing, different name. When you understand how the G major scale (using the same intervals of whole&half steps) has an F# in it, u will begin to move toward the reasons the cycle of 5th exists and works.
