This lied, also sung by KF, is the theme music of a Chabrol's film, "Que la bete meure...", from 1969. The lied is played at the very beginning and at the end. When I heard it would have bet that it is from Mahler.
@goldoliv Oh, yes, I get Mahler, too!! I have the feeling they (Brahms and Mahler) had a similar sense of awe towards mortality and who/whatever the Higher Maker is/turns out to be...
Thanks for the intel on Que la bête meure, will have to check it out somehow... The Harvard Film Archive in BOS is currently doing a Chabrol film series, but "Bête" is unfortunately not on the roster.. :-(
merci Fanfan ! rien à voir avec Irina Arkhipova et ma vidéo ..... mais merci j'aime beaucoup K.FERRIER , je dois bien avoir un disque qui se cache :))
Thank you very much for this post. I know many versions and Hans Hotter is my favourite version so far...but Kathleen Ferrier is impressive here...likely to be my favourite female performance.
I just bought the Decca CD of this recording, it is 7 seconds longer than this (I think you better adjust your LP there, CzarDodon) the volume is very low and at some points you can hear another track playing in the background (I think the magnetic tape the CD was recorded from had been over-magnetised.
The timing (and the pitch) is exactly the same as given on more than one internet site, are you sure you haven't bought a different recording? is the pianist John Newmark? or perhaps they have added some extra silence on your issue. As for the volume it sound ok to me, try restarting your computer, my volume sometimes plays tricks like that. I don't hear anything in the background either... are you sure you didn't take your Halcion (Triazolam) with a shot of scotch?
I'm a Mac user, so I'm sure it's not a computer problem :P .
I heard that a major problem in magnetic tapes is that pick up from other parts of the recording because of the contact that the tape has as it if curled up.
Ferrier I believe has performed this twice, once in English with orchestra, and once with piano accompany (this one), I have both recordings and I must say that this one is by far more superior.

A real contralto. Nice to hear. Nowadays we have mezzo's with no high notes posing for contraltos.

I was wrong about the timing by the way.
