He didn't have to look at artists in the orchester, he hada had evriting easily memorised in his mind and cells. What a GREAT conductor and artist he was and still is. I was born to be conductor, but did nothing abut it. Shame!
I didn't know this piece until I heard that part starting at 2:26 in "Violinist of Hameln: the Movie". XD It was such an epic scene that I had to look up the full performance.
In the movie, Hamel (the violinist) plays the tune on a violin, causes a girl to rise to the air and destroy Medusa with a combo of music and physical power (it's a pretty fun series, even though this sounds weird).
@beethovensbeloved ..How can you tell......half the time he seems to be asleep. Did you notice Donald Trump playing the rotary valve trumpet at about 6:00?
So,how many of you were doing a little armchair conducting throughout that one l wonder..l know l was. lt's hard to resist and...well,we all have our dreams, don't we ?
i get to play this song in My cities symphony!! i love this song!!! i made first chair second violinist, which is really something where i am, and i am the youngest first chair holder by two years, im in the advanced highschool symphony!! love this song!!
Responding to the Nazi question. Karajan WAS NOT a Nazi. In fact he hated the Nazis and they wanted to get rid of him, but he was much too popular with the public, so in spite of his disagreements, he was still director of the Berlin Opera. At least that's the way I heard it. But you can always check Wikipedia.
@seguidaz My mistake, he was a member of the Nazi party in 1933, but his membership was taken away for some reason - maybe because hid second wife was 1/4 Jewish.
@ryabovich I am sorry, my fault. He did conduct it in Vienna, 1987 at the New years concert, but this is not the one. This is the Berlin Philharmonic for sure. Thanks for pointing it out to me. Janos

@accon2 you sure know your history. thanks for the information. I was thinking more of the big battles against Napoleon, Wagram, Marengo, Austerlitz......
You must agree, though the music is superb. Have you heard the famous Austrian marches, Fucik, Komzak,
Alte Komraden, Florentine March, Schonfelder March .... you name it. Nice meeting you!
@hungaryhotshot1 Europe would have become a part of the Osman empire if Austria wouldn't have won battles – even against Napoleon at the end of his carreer. Well, it might not be yesterday's military glory what makes us happy today. It is austria's great musical tradition. Franz von Suppée is just one of so many great names. Your have mentioned some other good examples.
@accon2 dear me! Austria couldn't even defeat the Hungarian revolution in 1849 without the help of Russia.
In WWI they couldn't defeat Serbia without the help of Germany. same goes for Italy.
Austria did however liberate Buda from the Turks in 1686, hope I got the date right. Prince Eugene von Savoy, his statue stands there proudly. Music: sorry I forgot Ziehrer. Best regards Janos
This piece is ridiculously fun, though at fast tempos, the double tonguing and the end slay me... 1st trumpet part, oh, how we have a love/hate relationship.
This is from the Berliner Philharmoniker New Year's Eve Concert 1978. Conducted by M° Von Karajan (1908 - 1989). It's the best performance I've ever heard of this work by Fr. Van Suppé (1886). Great Concert! I've got it on DVD.

I haven't heard the Dvorak but I think he really blew on Beethovens 5th & 9th symph, but was great on the others like the 7th which is one of my fave versions. He was more a theatrist, if that's a word, there aren't many about now.
it's was funny how the conductor's arm and hand was moving, but not the body. at 1:54, the clarinet and bassoon's tonguing was well done, quick, short and on the same beat. the change of the mood, the tonguing and the dynamic was well the done

Before I get pilloried for not liking this video some explanations are in order:
1. I'm a huge classical music fan.
2. I love Von Suppe's overtures.
3. I love Karajan and think the Berlin Philharmonic is THE best orchestra in the world.
4. Technically I like this recording.
BUT .... when the quality of the sound is similar to a bad Internet phone call it ruins everything. That's why I "disliked" this.
MikeWiggins1235711 4 months ago
@MikeWiggins1235711 Before I get penalized for not liking your comment, let give YOU an explanation.
1. This is a good video, not for the actual"video, but because of the audio.
2. I only dislike a comment if it is ofensive or stupid. (also comments including yours.
3. I believe you are being a little arrogant for constructing your comment in such fasion to seem "Proper".
I do not believe a reply is in order from you, so we can leave it at that.
