  • freedom from IRELAND

  • Youtube is a strange place when my last comment attracts abusive messages. Pointing out that the song has nothing to do with Liverpool and giving an outline of it and its composer is not the same as saying anything derogatory about Luke. In fact Luke himself on other clips says who wrote the song.

  • who´s the person not liking it? I like the Dubliners so much =D

  • cannot hear this without tears coming

  • @MrRedcap999 i know your right and all.but who the fuck do ya think populates liverpool?

    THE FUCKING IRISH:D

its as irish as you will get it in england.:) Still lets all agree awesome song.and luke kelly is awesome too

  • @theo2033" i know your right and all.but who the fuck do ya think populates liverpool?" It doesn't come from Liverpool. Salford is now in Greater Manchester. It is not a traditional song coming out of the community though. It was written by Ewan MacColl who was himself born in Salford but his parents were Scottish. There is nothing Irish about the song other than some Irish bands covered it.

  • his voice was my first experience of Iristh folk music. It's more than 30 years ago and I still get my eyes wet listening to his interpretation of Irelan

  • "luke kelly was the best bar none" christy moore

  • RIP,great version

  • Who cares where its about, Luke Kelly was the man, is the man, and will always be the man! Biggest ledgend ever, R.I.P <3

  • silancea ireland!!!im 4m romania love u all,dubliners ..respectt

  • @MrRedcap999 I've told so many people that truth and they don't believe me, but there's a version on youtube somewhere that has Luke say the same, I'm Irish and love the song, but it has been swiped by our lot and presented at something that it ain't :)

  • @maureenmo1

    pogues.

  • Musicality wise, Luke Kelly is the best Irish folk singer ever. If you prefer someone else, it's probably not because they are a better singer.

  • Shane MacGowan... I'll say no more.

  • @oldnetfag yea is a drunk

  • yer talkin pish maureenmo1 thats the real deal

    quality tune original

  • awsome song! thats why i like you guys from the islands

  • @frankthetank112244

You mean the Island Frank lol

  • Listen to "irish" Pete Rivers on a wonderful irish ballad "don't let your love bleed away", which is really about London. Nonetheless fantastic, as was Luke!!

  • hmmm its not about manchester its about SALFORD we are a city in our our right in the shadow of manchester , and salford was here first many years before manchester, but your all right top song!!!

  • Born in Manchester to an Irish mother and a Salfordian father I'm a bit of a mixed bag. (School in Salford, School Holidays in Ireland I'm as Irish as I am English)

Salford was a city first. Definitely a song about Salford. Original Lyrics: "I smelled the spring, on the Salford wind."

Big laugh was a drunk RA head in a club in Ireland telling me I shouldn't be singing this cos I'm English, he looked puzzled when I told him it was about Salford and not Dublin.

    There's some funny buggers about.

  • My wifes from Oldham, also being swallowed up by this Grtr. Manchester thing. I LOVE THIS SONG.

  • great songs this fucking irish have :)) wish i was one of them and drink till i drop :))))

  • this is an english song

  • Ya still can man... ya still can!

  • woo woo woo im shit faced and im loving it

  • La Felguera, Asturias, Dirty old town, ¡Qué gran canción!

  • The thing that spoils your view on this is its a song about Manchester England. Where Luke spent most of his life.

  • "Dirty Old Town" was written by Ewan MacColl for a scene change in his play "Landscape with chimneys" (1949) which was set in Salford (NOT Manchester, that's next-door so to speak).

What gives you the strange idea that Luke Kelly spent most of his life in Manchester? He did live in England for a couple of years, but as far as I am aware that was mostly spent in Leeds anyway.

  • i heard wolverhampton lol

  • Irish songs are cool! ...Ukraine

  • i agree, in fact, irish songs are the best. unfortunately, this song was written by a scotsman, ewan maccoll. still a great tune.

  • Ewan Maccoll (real name James miller) was born

and bread in Salford, England to Scotts parents.

  • deadly song, Luke is lethal.

  • Much better than shane's version.

  • magnificant

  • I grew up with the Luke and Ronnie, my da loved them and so do I, gonna miss them all

  • RIP Luke this has to be one of the best things to come out of Ireland himself and Ronnie RIP

  • luke kelly is one of the greats, my mam knew him well originally from sheriff street.

  • Luke puts some much into this version. Train-IN and Steel-EE!

He was the best to come out of Eire.

And he was a Dub. Even better.

    My favourite artist ever.

  • I love Luke Kelly and the Dubliners but Im not going to lie Shane Macgowan and the Pogues do a much much better version....perhaps because of his missing teeth the effect is much better the song definately needs to be slurred

  • yeah but not everyone is perfect.

but i think he was the best artist ireland ever produced

    up tha dubs

  • haha I just love the way he sings "shining steeEEl", this is just an amazing version thanks alot!.

  • Magic! R.I.P. Luke.A great Irish bard.
