Leroy Shield did a lot more than just the Hal Roach comedy incidental music. In the early 1920's he was working for Victor, conducting and doing A & R work for a variety of musical activities including ethnic music such as Polish music. Later on, as a staff arranger for NBC, he did easy listening music a-la- Percy Faith type arrangements in the early 1950's. There is a YouTube upload of his own studio band doing "Sing Song Girl" in 1930. God only knows what else he did musically!
Many thanks go to Piet Scheuders for sharing this epiphany from R. Crumb. It fits my situation perfectly, as my musical tastes were also being seriously influenced by those Hal Roach shorts that were always on TV when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's. I too discovered old 78's due to a longing for more of the music I heard in the early 30's movies and cartoon shorts. It has been one of life's great joys.
