@katinkers i think you may be mistaking him with the mouth of sauron. You might argue that his facial anatomy speaks volumes about the orientation of the dark lord himself.
I don't get it... A) why didn't he just stab the wizard and then fly off? It would have taken him less than 2 seconds! B) Now this dude has the wizard completely beaten and unable to do anything... but in another scene in the movie, the wizard rides out with some light coming out of his cane, and this time suddenly all the dragons are scared shitless of him and fly off... I really don't get it...
@Motive11331 Uh, yes. You should worry about logic in any film, regardless of the genre. If that wizard suddenly spun around really quickly, revealing his Superman spandex suit under his robe, then flew around and shot laser beams out of his eyes, would you think "hey, that's weird" or would you think "oh but it's just a fantasy movie with elves and dragons, no need to worry about logic"? Just because it's fantasy doesn't mean it has to be illogic.
@rtbjk While it is true that Gandalf was of the Valinorean race....the powers of the Istari were bound when they were sent across the Sea they were forbidden to ever attempt to take power...thus The Witch King was stronger by far than Gandalf was allowed to be...
@Xackdee dosnt matter... The wotch king would rape them both any day, for gos sake he would hot pippin once with his mace, and that would be him, and gandalf... Well, hed fuck him up really bad
I don't get it. All these comments arguing about whether Gandalf would own the Witch King or be evenly matched. Either way this scene shows neither, it shows Gandalf being thrashed by the Witch King. It's totally out of line, Gandalf shouldn't be overpowered that easily.
Not only Gandalf but even Pippin is portrayed as pathetically weak and a coward. Way to ruin two great characters in one scene.
@FreestyleGGD Not a simple dagger: "So passed the sword of the Barrowdowns, work of the Westernesse. But glad he have been to know its fate who wrought it slowly long ago in the Northkingdom when the Dúnedain were young and chief among their foes was the dread realm of Angmar and its sorcerer king. No other blade, though mightier hands had wielded it, would have dealt that foe a wound so bitter, cleaving the undead flesh, breaking the spell that knit his undead sinews to his will."
This is silly, Gandalf is like a lesser god and the witch king is just a posessed man. Not just in the books either because gandalf defeats the balrog and in my head I cannot see the witch king killing the balrog.
"The Witch-king, their leader, is more powerful in all ways than the others; but he must not yet be raised to the stature of Vol. III. There, put in command by Sauron, he is given an added demonic force." (Letter #210, Letters of Tolkien)
Conclusion: This stand of is perfectly how it could have been. Gandalf staff isnt some ancient undestructible relique and it was implied Nazgul could obliderate the enemys weopon. Hell Gandalf had even trouble fighting 4 of them at Weathertop, just imagine.
@rafaelcalsaverini pj did take certain liberties with the scene, I'll agree, but recall that gandalf (olorin) was the only Maia who was reluctant to join the istari initially because he feared and was humbled by sauron (described in unfinished tales). That fear was simultaneously his strength and weakness. The Witchking asserted that he would "break" gandalf, and he did this by shattering his staff, and in doing so commanding fear over gandalf, but not killing him.
Don't underestimate the Witch King, the ring given to him gave him incredible amounts of power. While it's true that Gandalf may have been able to beat him, it would have a terrible battle because the two would be pretty evenly matched. Gandalf is a Maiar spirit, but he is limited (Along with the other wizards) in his power. Now if he was granted more power, he would have no problem beating the Witch King, but as it stands, the Witch King would be no pushover.
@Robofish12 A fight between the Witch King and Gandalf would be epic indeed, and it certainly wouldn't be a walk in the park for the Wizard. I think there's little doubt that he'd be victorious in the end, though. There is, however, a difference between "The Witch King could pose some kind of threat to Gandalf" and "The Witch King can shatter Gandalf's staff and leave him defenseless on the floor with a single spell."
@Robofish12 Yes, it would be an epic battle. But this is not what's seem in the scene. The scene shows the Witchking rendering Gandalf absolutely helpless and prostrated in the ground in a matter of seconds. Bizarre...
Yeah, the Istari were not allowed to have as much power as Sauron, which was good seeing as what happened with Saruman. The amount of potential power the Istari (the order of wizards) could have is actually scary.
The movies looked good, but PJ screwed a lot of things up. Frodo sending away Sam for example. But also this bit, Gandalf destroyed a Balrog (Maia), same order as Sauron and Gandalf, but he could not destroy the Witchking? a complete simpleton compared to a Maia, he's just a fallen man, with a little fairy dust sprinkled upon him. Thanks for fuckin up the chain of command PJ
@somethinglacking1 I think that u forgot about one thing. Nazguls are getting stronger when their master gets stronger and Sauron wasn't pretty strong in the 1st chapter called "The Fellowship of The Ring". In this chapter he was pretty strong so the Witchking was strong too.
And I don't think that Shadowfax would hesitate and drop his master just because he encountered some evil beast. He's no common warhorse... he's the fucking king of the mearas! He descends from Nahar, the horse of Oröme, the hunter Vala. And Nahar was itself a Maia too.
This scene is absolutely ridiculous in the context of the books. Gandalf is a Maia. The Witchking is just a man, a slave of the One Ring. That would be a good fight and probably would not be resolved (because of the prophecy regarding who should kill the Witchking). But he would never be able to destroy Gandalf's staff or prostrate him on the floor like that.
@rafaelcalsaverini i was like, WTF im sure Gandalf is more powerful than the witch king, would of been so much better if gandalf wasted him, bolt of pure light or lightning or something
@rafaelcalsaverini No, it's not. It's entirely faithful to what was described in the Silmarillion and the History of Middle Earth. The Valar expressly muted the power of the Istari so they could not dominate the people of Middle Earth using strength alone. The Witchking had already power beyond most other Men, being of Numenorean stock, so I don't find it unreasonable that given his background in sorcery and with the effects of the Ring he would be evenly matched with Gandalf.
@moytron1 yes, it would be more or less evenly matched. I said as much. But what we see in this scene is NOT evenly matched. We see the Witchking totally kicking Gandalf's ass and prostrating him helpless in the ground with nay a chance to rebuff the attack. This is not an even match, this is Gandalf being overpowered, which is VERY difficult to believe. Gandalf vs. the Balrog was an even match: a long battle which each of the opponents could win only with much difficulty.
@moytron1 Well, i must disagree, at least at one point... Even Knowing The Power The Witchking had before becoming a Nazgul, being descendent from the "First" Human that come to Land In Silmarilion, Gandalf was returned to earth, his "mission" wasn't complete, so I think he would be more powerfull, and could defeat The Witchking easily in fact. Remember, Aragorn made 5 "Minor" nazguls Retreat.
@rafaelcalsaverini The Witch-King is possessed by the sorcery of Sauron not some simple magic, which gives the Witch-King an extreme amount of power even against a Maia.
Sauron is a Maia himself so saying that he would have some power of that ilk, would be the same as saying that Morgoth was greater then either of his Valar counterparts. Indeed in certain respects he was because he was so made. but the Witch King of Angmar is a wraith bearing a much lesser ring then the one Gandalf has. This, just like the illustration that Faramir was tempted by the ring in the movie is one of it's wrongs.
True, but the maia aren't all powerful. After all, an elf lord killed the king of the balrogs in a one on one fight. And he was supposed to be as powerful as Sauron himself, and second only to Morgoth.
i think that its not the creatures power that holds them back but more his bad breath i mean if you went around eating people and horses after a couple hours its gonna smell!
Okay this scene pisses me off a lot. Gandalf would have kicked ass here, the five were created by the valar and the witch king is a servant of the servant of a valar ok... power levels vastly different. This is not how the book works out.... this scene is fail.
Why not kill the white mofokin wizard and then go check what horn that was? And btw how the fuck could the servant of the secret fire stand up against an ancient demon but got his staff busted up by a muppet who aragorn scared the crap out of? hm ;<
Gandalf, one of the maiar, that was there since the creation of Arda, (the universe where middle earth is). Gandalf, to whom the powers were given by Eru (Arda's creator) himself, would have absolutely no trouble aggainst a mere corrupted man, leader of the Nazgul, whose weak powers were given by another maiar (Sauron). If anything, a fair fight would be 2 maiars fighting, Gandalf vs Sauron himself.
It was like, "yeah, i could totally kill you in an instant, but because i heard a horn blow off in the distance, i'm going to go check that out and maybe come back to you later."
@somethinglacking1, actually from what I remember from the books, is that the Witch King is Gandalf's equal and if they were to fight, one could not defeat the other.
@Insanzul Gandalf and the Witchking are not equals. Gandalf is Maiar, Istari, immortal spirits made from the thought of God "Eru". Same as Sauroon and even Balrogs. The Witch-King is only a cursed man/Numenorian, he is controlled by Sauron. Gandalf would have no trouble at all defeating him. Jackson only did it here to dramatically up the tension and threat. In Fellowship, Aragorn even fights with the Witch King and burns it with a torch and it runs away, later, a woman kills him.
@somethinglacking1 id say thats why it was cut, great scene though, but i got to tell you that deleted scene with the boat when legolas shoots the guy cause gimli tapped his bow is by far the worse deleted scene of them all.
@somethinglacking1 yes and it was probably deleted as it makes Eowyn's and Merry's victory strange, though Glorfindel did predict that the Witchking would not fall by the hand of man.
@somethinglacking1 All of the maiars were mortal even sauron but the ring gave him immortality. Witch king was a king he was cursed and gifted by a witch she gave him great powers and immortality but the point was that only women could defeat him
@dcfefs He was not allowed to use too much magic, he's there to aid Men not to fight their battles for them. I personally liked the fact that the magic in the movie wasn't used so liberally, it makes those times when magic is used even more special.
@kristoffersayshi So he is not allowed to defend himself? He used magic twice to defend himself and to break a bridge, here he gets his staff broken, and saved by a sodding horn. This would have been a good "Special magic time" Don't u think? Would have been more epic with a With king vs Gandalf fight rather than some "You look upon a women" bullshit. Why wouldnt he be allowed to use his full potential anyway, They running out of mana or something?
@MultibaWz This scene only exists in the movies to create more suspense. In Moria, the Balrog was way out of the Fellowship's league, so Gandalf had to intervene. As somethinglacking1 said, the Witch-King and Gandalf are in different leagues, it wouldn't be an epic clash, more of a curb stomp battle. The Witch-King was undone not by simple brute force but by his own arrogance, he remembered Glorfindel's prophecy yet still launched forward at Éowyn, to be undone by her and Merry.
@MultibaWz If it makes you feel better, in the books the Witch-King and Gandalf encounter went much differently. After the gates were breached, the Witch-King rode into the city but Gandalf rode to forbid him passage. The arrogant Wraith showed off his power but unlike the movies he never attacked Gandalf, who stood fearless before the Wraith. The staff breaking was all Peter Jackson's doing so go after him or read the books, they are so much better. :-)
you know that Gandalf has little chances against the witchking?

True, but the maia aren't all powerful. After all, an elf lord killed the king of the balrogs in a one on one fight. And he was supposed to be as powerful as Sauron himself, and second only to Morgoth.

Okay this scene pisses me off a lot. Gandalf would have kicked ass here, the five were created by the valar and the witch king is a servant of the servant of a valar ok... power levels vastly different. This is not how the book works out.... this scene is fail.

Good that this scene was deleted. The Witch King would of killed Gandalf.......Why didn't he, he had aportunity to do so..

Why not kill the white mofokin wizard and then go check what horn that was? And btw how the fuck could the servant of the secret fire stand up against an ancient demon but got his staff busted up by a muppet who aragorn scared the crap out of? hm ;<

Why didn't he just kill the defenceless Gandalf and THEN fly off to deal with Rohan ¬¬
TalonMercenary 2 months ago
Gandalf, one of the maiar, that was there since the creation of Arda, (the universe where middle earth is). Gandalf, to whom the powers were given by Eru (Arda's creator) himself, would have absolutely no trouble aggainst a mere corrupted man, leader of the Nazgul, whose weak powers were given by another maiar (Sauron). If anything, a fair fight would be 2 maiars fighting, Gandalf vs Sauron himself.

nsilva2004 2 months ago
@somethinglacking1, actually from what I remember from the books, is that the Witch King is Gandalf's equal and if they were to fight, one could not defeat the other.
Insanzul 2 months ago

@somethinglacking1 but remember that gandalf is forbidden to interact directly with mortal affairs, and so much of his power is unavailable to him

nathan96berry 1 month ago
@somethinglacking1 yes and it was probably deleted as it makes Eowyn's and Merry's victory strange, though Glorfindel did predict that the Witchking would not fall by the hand of man.

@somethinglacking1 also it is a relatively untrained woman
OMGitzme43 1 month ago
@somethinglacking1 All of the maiars were mortal even sauron but the ring gave him immortality. Witch king was a king he was cursed and gifted by a witch she gave him great powers and immortality but the point was that only women could defeat him

i hat how gandalf never did any real magic in the movie... excapt the u shall not pass thingy and the UV lights
dcfefs 2 months ago
@dcfefs He was not allowed to use too much magic, he's there to aid Men not to fight their battles for them. I personally liked the fact that the magic in the movie wasn't used so liberally, it makes those times when magic is used even more special.

@kristoffersayshi hereth hereth.
Slowshyy 2 months ago
@kristoffersayshi So he is not allowed to defend himself? He used magic twice to defend himself and to break a bridge, here he gets his staff broken, and saved by a sodding horn. This would have been a good "Special magic time" Don't u think? Would have been more epic with a With king vs Gandalf fight rather than some "You look upon a women" bullshit. Why wouldnt he be allowed to use his full potential anyway, They running out of mana or something?
MultibaWz 1 month ago
@MultibaWz This scene only exists in the movies to create more suspense. In Moria, the Balrog was way out of the Fellowship's league, so Gandalf had to intervene. As somethinglacking1 said, the Witch-King and Gandalf are in different leagues, it wouldn't be an epic clash, more of a curb stomp battle. The Witch-King was undone not by simple brute force but by his own arrogance, he remembered Glorfindel's prophecy yet still launched forward at Éowyn, to be undone by her and Merry.
kristoffersayshi 1 month ago 2
@kristoffersayshi Whatever :) We'd rather wanna see gandalf save himiself (With his magic) than saved by a horn wouldnt we :p? Thats my point.
MultibaWz 1 month ago
@MultibaWz If it makes you feel better, in the books the Witch-King and Gandalf encounter went much differently. After the gates were breached, the Witch-King rode into the city but Gandalf rode to forbid him passage. The arrogant Wraith showed off his power but unlike the movies he never attacked Gandalf, who stood fearless before the Wraith. The staff breaking was all Peter Jackson's doing so go after him or read the books, they are so much better. :-)
