i used to have unbuntu and fuck it was quick, but only problem was it had WAY too many problems and errors in it, also it would not connect with my router to update , so now im back with XP .....

you can have both operating systems on your pc at the same time, use ubuntu if u like it, and when u need to play games just boot to your mac/windows. that's what i'm doing :D
thanks for colective tutorials, Straythenomad I installed ubuntu 9.04 Beta, Works Beautiful and with the forum in your Vid I learn Enough for my my desktop effect working, escuse my Bad English Salutes for all.
I found it out.. You have to install compiz. YOu'll get a bunch of different options and 3 of them are about the cube. Cool!!!!!!!!!!. Next spep: Find out the bottom tool bar :( don't know how to get it,
elevate, run the application that retrieves packages, then basically tell it to install the Applet which will let you change settings to Compiz, which is the application which allows desktop effects such as this.
I'm running Hardy right now, so I don't know how much the "System>Preferences>Whatever" differs, since the post below, NewJerseyTico, mentions a different menu branch.
8.10 was the first version that just did not recognise my Vista x64 partition no matter what I have done... I did not have this problem with 7.x and 8.04 either... :(
wave would like to know how to enable the transparency of ubuntu 8.10 and download the desktop version does not enable transparency as you could tell me please
billyaris: you can 'dual boot'. this installs ubuntu *alongside* xp, and does not change your windows xp. when your computer starts, you pick which OS you want to boot into.
google 'dual boot ubuntu' and you'll see many, many resources. try to stick with newer/update tutorials, as it keeps getting simpler and simpler.
All you have to do to dual boot is to insert the Ubuntu disk and click install inside of windows no changes made to the OS other then a boot setting allowing you to either go into Windows or Linux/Ubuntu its not as easy to use as windows well I'd say it is but its different. So i highly recommend dual booting first for a while to see if you actually like it. If you need help you can PM me or post it here I'm sure someone will help you.
0.33 Does anybody know how to get that effect? I'm new to ubuntu and have already got a few of these effect with compiz, but I don't know what part that is. It looks like the desktop is split into four partitions, but I've only got the original two.
Got it! FIgured it out myself after a while. Right click the workspace - bottom right - and select 'Preferences'. Set the number of columns to '4' and then press Super + E.
are u talking about the expo feature? if you are then go to compiz manager, and check expo and open it to create how many partitions you want, once you have enable it , just press SUPER + E
You don't have to. There is an option to install Ubuntu using Wubi. Just put your disk in when you are in Windows and choose install inside windows. Then Ubuntu will install like a regular program. If you don't like it or just want to uninstall all you will have to do then is remove it through the add and remove programs menu. I have a vid about it on my channel that might help.
scruffyx is an idiot try doing research into next gen console's before opening your trap, the ps3 come with a shit load more processor power than a lot of computers... and the built in gpu[graphics processing unit] is routed with the micro cell broadband processor and together will pump out a crap load of power... buttom line is i wouldn't use the ps3 not because of power reason's but because of practicality purposes..anyways good video on linux desktop effects...
Guys i just wanted to ask...... does this automatically configure all the drivers such as my graphic card 8600GT and my other motherboard drivers including the audio?
You need to install something to configure it first, open terminal (accessories -> terminal (or something like that)), type "sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager", then enter your password, enter, wait until finished, open System->pref.-> advanced desktop effects, then set something here.
Damn i was trying to install this version but when i try to boot the ubuntu its keep me saying error error, and some codes there,, i have dual boot vista and ubuntu but ubuntu is not longer working after vista prompt me to repair some boot issues!!
Actually COMPIZ is not installed by default but it does come with UBUNTU by default. Just go to applications, add/remove, under add/remove switch over TO ALL other then conacale or whatever it is and do a search in the box for compiz. Install it, start it under system and change some settings and enjoy. Can also go to pcwizkid website and see how to do it there too. Hope this helps.
I heard some rumour in some forum that whit some program u can paly windows games in this. And is this working in PS3? And if first rumour are right can I play PC games in my PS3??!?
hye u have a nice video , but i have a question :p i have ubuntu 8.10 the latest version , but i want te desktop like u in a cube so how i do that .. ?
First, make sure compiz is running and desktop effects are up. You don't have to have them all on at the same time but it does help. Next, make sure you have enough desktops enabled. Make sure you have cube and rotate cube clicked and then you just press the left and right mouse buttons at the same time on the desktop and there you go. Now you just drag your mouse left and it turns left and drag your mouse right and it turns right.
I'm just wondering how and where did you get those effects? I'm just new in Ubuntu, I just installed it 2 hours ago. And by the way, I installed Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.
go to add/remove programs, enable "all available applications", then write in the search box "COMPIZ", finally install "ADVANCE DESKTOP EFFECTS", after the installation is finished go to system->preferences->advance desktop effects or(compizconfig settings manager) just enable whatever you want and have fun =D
use Wubi :) puts all the ubuntu files in 1 folder and when you don't want ubuntu anymore you delete folder download a program and delete register(i think)with that program and everything is back to normal
You want to select a download server location that is physically close to where you are, if not at least within the same country. Even if you choose a server close to you however, you might not have as good of a download speed as one from across the country due to different factors like traffic and stuff. Universities are normally pretty good and reliable, for me at least.
Thank you very much, and one more thing if you don't mind. it says you have to put ubuntu on a CD? i thought it was just like on your computer. do you know what that's all about?
The download server downloads an ISO. That's an image and you have to burn the image to a disc so that you can install from the disc. It's like when you get a new computer and you have an XP or Vista OS disc that you pop in when you first start your computer. And it always comes in handy if you have to uninstall Ubuntu; you can just pop the disc back in.
No problem. Hey, by the way, if you are interested in any other Linux distributions, then I'd give OpenSUSE Linux a try. It has excellent web site infrastructure and printed documentation (easy to follow directions. =])
If ubuntu just could bring easy installation to graphic cards, and read mp3 files easily and also play dvd movies. Hardy (Heron) is the 8.04 release of Ubuntu. The 8.10 release is called Intrepid (Ibex), and the 9.04 release is the Jaunty Jackalope.
Go to System/Administration/Synaptic Package Manager. Mark 'simple-ccsm' for installation, and click Apply.
