nails should not be too long, just if you look at them from the inside of your palm facing you, and looking at your finger tip at eye level, you should see your nail poking out, doesnt have too be much,

you can play without fingernails, but the sound produced is dead and dull. you could use finger picks which are like claws, but i find them VERY hard to use :P
