  • In the middle of this after two minutes, you briefly see Mike Read d.j. 'playing' a violin and wearing a cap in the instrumental break ; one of his early attempts to suck up to pop stars and be seen with them. Also Jimmy Pursey has said that he used to attend teen discos in Walton on Thames where the convicted teen boy sex abuser Jonathan King used to prey on young boys ; fithly fuckin' Pederast ; cut off his balls and throw him back in jail !

  • That is so brilliant, thanks for posting didn't even know this existed.

Wow, old VHS tape, how did we ever put up with it?

  • @reziztanze

Do you actually want to know what this song is about?

In the 70s, when urban 'regeneration' was happening in London, a lot of people who had lived in the East end / City areas were removed and re-located to Hersham in Surrey.

As you can imagine, for the so-called 'Hersham Boys' life was very different from the way it had been - people looked down their noses at them, etc etc.. They were the 'Cockney Cowboys' or 'Hersham Boys' that Sham 69 are singing about.

  • @23Scarlet2323 they also got their name from a football team called herSHAM 69 :)

  • i live in hersham

  • i live in hersham

  • Just look closely at the antics of those performing in this video. All the males are supposed to be men there 20's yet, all act and behave like 10 year olds. This meaningless and idiotic music is what’s responsible for the mess kids are in today. Because their fathers watched and idolised this rebellion against order, discipline, authority and common sense. Sadly, they never passed down the right ingrediants to their kids to make Men out of them. Hence, the mess we are in today.

  • @reziztanze well all my brothers loved this group and theres nothing wrong with my nephews there all in the forces and are very respectable.and not all kids of today are bad.

  • @kevhehir I’m sure plenty of kids were not affected by any type of music. However, how many drifted into crime due to the destructive messages from groups like sham69? Also, what good example is this song setting for young kids back then to follow? You have a group of so - called men jumping around like children. Just sit back and look at what is going on. And just sit back and listen to the meaningless lyrics.

  • @reziztanze Its just a song and a good one at that.

  • @chinchillaq1 Yes a song that sang about meaningless rubbish. How did this song inspire young people to be good citizens? Come on, it’s senseless garbage. Christ, are people that thick they can’t see through this nonsense.

  • @reziztanze A lot of people like songs for the beat and don't care about the lyrics. Tell me some songs that inspired young people to be better citizens. I would like to check them out to try to see where you are coming from.

  • @chinchillaq1I don't know of any songs (but I’m sure there are some individual ones) since the birth of rock n roll that offer advice. Most have been senseless rubbish (like this one) with destructive messages. Others have been songs about crying over a girl or alcohol or drug problems. Also, modern music has had kids adopting ridiculous dress attire and beliefs

Anyway, what’s this song supposed to be about?

  • @23Scarlet2323The fact they made a song about that shows how ludicrous this garbage is. Just like with the name shame69, it's all meaningless and childlike.

All this song did was create a gap even further between people via daft music. “Hersham boys, Hersham boys laced up boats and corduroys.” Christ, fucking pathetic!!!

  • @reziztanze

I think it's funny that you've got such a bee in your bonnet over punk music.

So, you don't like punk music / puck mentality. So what.

Lots of people do, and lots of those people are well-educated, respectable, middle-class people with good upbringings and excellent careers.

Your generalisations just make you look like you've got a massive chip on your shoulder... why all the hate?!?

  • @reziztanze Theres nothing wrong with a sensible pair of boots and a pair of corduroy strides, mate

  • @reziztanze My uncle is a lead guitarist in a great band who constantly get nomintaed for awards with the likes of Virgin and MOJO and NME etc. He's intelligent, a musical genius, and quite well mannered, his band have played on Jools Holland too. He is addicted to punk and new-wave, he loves it and always has, it's his inspiration so it doesn't particularly have too a negative effect on listeners so m8 you need to loosen up about punk in genereal

  • @creamycanarie98 Yes, but look at the thousands it's had negative effects on. Punk offered nothing in the sense of decency and morality. And any sane society needs this to prosper and be better.

  • @reziztanze It's about boys from Hersham going into London and having a laugh. I thought the title pretty much gave that away?

  • Comment removed

  • @reziztanze it was a bit of fun what did you expect from sham 69 . let me guess your favorite album is dark side moon a album with no nonsence on it .TAKE A DAY OFF MR HAPPY

  • @kenmacaulay600 I don't follow any form of modern music.

  • @reziztanze For those of us now in our early 50s, this was the music when we were growing up. It was a laugh, a reaction to the sh't economy of the time, to all the unemployment, to progressive rock bands whose heads had gone up their own butts, to the establishment, to having eff all to do (pubs closed in the afternoon, and there were no late bars back then, well not on the money most young people had). Good on Sham 69, the Pistols, the Buzzcocks, the Undertones, the Stranglers and the rest.

  • @NeverMindTheBLX

dam im in my 40s and i rember them

  • @NeverMindTheBLX You only have to look at rezizstanze You Tube Channel to see what kinda guy he is. Total RIGHT WING idiot.Im only 43 (only..lol) but was lucky enough to knock round with people a lot older & so got to know all the great punk bands from an early age. Now its all Hip Hop & killing & shootin OR bland meaningless crap. Most kids have nothing to follow its all so generic. No punks,Mods,Skins etc.At least it made you feel like you belonged to something.:)

  • @reziztanze My God, you're an idiot. Or a troll. Or both. The kids of today who are the real trouble would not have come from parents who were into punk. I'm afraid that you'll have to look to other cultural aberrations for that kind of legacy. At any rate, STFU, you're ridiculous.

  • the vicar wont like it

  • MY favorite rough stuff and all?

  • Now this lot were lunatics!

Remember going to a party at a farm years ago, and we just went mental when this came on, Great days!

  • Love it, lived down Molesey Road growing up, went to school in Hersham and spent many a pissed night hanging around there xx

  • "Cockney Cowboys" LOL Jimmy Pursey is such a wanker. Hersham is in Surrey - a LONG way from the sound of the Bow Bells!

  • @MrAlohashirt

I think his point is that although Hersham is a semi-rural area, we're so close to London that we speak in a kind of Cockney accent. He's not saying that we're actually Cockneys, though.

  • would probably be classed as thugs now in this stupid p.c country

  • Перси говорят спился в говно вообще. А шам без перси-деньги на ветер, в чем мы собссно два года назад и убедились.

  • Thanks for this - it's lovely - so many memories - do the Hersham boys still perform by any chance????

  • @zrieqi58 theyre called sham69

  • I love this video - I lived in Hersham - Hersham Road from 1968 to 1978 - near Witham's Garage - it's still there - my old first house - but the husband from Shepperton has gone - he first told me about the group. He also said he went to school with the boys - is that true? Rosewell's the name!!!! Has the doco on Sham69 been on yet Nyquest? You posted your comment 10 months ago? If not - when will it be shown? I'd love to see Hersham again. Is it possible to meet the boys - I live in Yorkshire

  • @zrieqi58

I also lived in the Hersham Road from when I was born until 1979, when we moved to Walton. Wish we'd stayed in Hersham, though. Much more friendly. The guy who owned the barn in the video built our extension.

If your husband went to Rydens then he did indeed go to school with the boys. I went to Rydens too, but not until the Eighties.

You can see the Hersham Road on Google Street View.

  • @RebelVoDKa -Hi - just seen your reply!!! 1 day ago!!! My husband went to school in Shepperton - that's where he lived - off Walton Bridge Road but in Middlesex not Surrey - a stone's throw away from the garage. He went to Thamesmead Manygates Lane - till about 1964-65 but we married in 1969 and our first house was in Hersham - near the junction with Molesey Road. We did all our courting at The Duke's Head in Walton - it's gone now, is that Molesey Road pub facing the road to Esher still there?

  • @zrieqi58

The Barley Mow? It was still there at Christmas when I last visited Hersham.

  • @zrieqi58 Do you mean the barley mow?, if so yes it is

  • sham 69 remind me of a cockney circle jerks.

  • This is such an epic video. It would brighten the saddest of days, make a crying person laugh. Dancing with the dog!! I love it!!!!

  • THIS is punk, for me anyway. Punk is a pretty broad definition with several splinter sounds, though (If yer punk ya know it, if ya THINK yer punk, ya might not be), but yeah This is punk..If they would even call themselves punk at the time...The forebearers of the singsong chorus, the chants, all the good stuff...Great video too..

  • @informationplz Europe in general (especially UK though) really have the chants down. That's one of the biggest reasons why I started liking Sham was just because of the super catchy chants that you can scream and feel like a part of something... (even being 3 thousand miles away and 30 years late)

  • lovin it!!!

  • The drummer for this line-up, Ricky Goldstein became a member of the Bootleg Beatles during the mid 80s. Great tune and nice to hear it again.

  • Wonderful! Glad you got it up on YouTube. Looks like the tape was about to stretch irredeemably!

  • ooh yeah!!!!

  • False shit wtf?????????

  • Thanks for posting this I never knew there was a video for this its priceless

  • @Fhonax ...lol who are you then?? you must now that mark cain's (the drummer) family live down celadine road then. was good friends with his lil' bro jay..hahaha happy days

  • Celandine Road is a goood road Steve, I live across from ya mum, not at Joans tho, other side xD

  • I used to think this was the bollocks at the time, but now...

And yes, he does say chavvy. Chavvy is a gypsy word meaning kid or child. It's not a new word. My old gran used to call everyone chav and she was a gyspy born in 1923. I think he also says "didlo" which is another gypsy word, meaning mad.

  • did he say CHAVVY at 1.37 or was it my imagination?

ahead of their time or what by 20 fuckin years if i heard it fuckin right ... FUCK THE POLICE

  • If you were my age when Sham 69 first appeared on the telly you'd understand why I love this band. Fuckin brilliant and part of my youth. Look up the word zeigeist for more information.

  • na staru klasiku sa pomaly zabuda

  • firt time i`ve seen

    this one too

    thanx for putting

    it up

  • Bought the 12" single at the time but never saw this video

  • real shame that jimmy was a cunt n sold out.

he's some sort of fuckin model now ain't he?

  • Don't fink Jimmy got any aggro from the nonce Jonathan King dahn at the Hop, know wot I mean, know wot I mean?

  • They woz from the west and it woz a bit ruff arahnd the edges, know wot I mean, know wot mean?

  • Brilliant that, the bobbies, bending at the knees. "Evenin' all, wot's all dis ven? 'Ello 'ello."

  • LONG LIVE COCKNEY & HERSHAM COWBOYS!!! Oi!!!!

  • I spent a day with Jimmy Pursey last month filming around Hersham for a forth coming doco on Sham 69.

We went back to the barn in this promo & several other places including the Watermans Arms where Jim used to take his dog "Harry". Great day spent with one of my favourite front men. Nice one Jim!

  • Sounds great

  • @Nyquest im a geordie but stuck with em for years lol

  • @Nyquest

    lies

  • @Nyquest Its a shame The Star Pub has now gone

  • @bigredkev1 The star wasn't that great...but I guess it beat the old house...

  • very true what leirodad says ie the outer suburbs/home counties working class probably number around 10million(going on the whole of London&south east being upto 20million) but theyre about the most ignord people in England. Invariably the real natives of the area but downtrodden in their own region by the middle classes many of whom actually originate from the rest ofBritain. ie if u want2 find a real local person in any HomeCounties town/village youre best bet is 2go 2the local councilestate.

  • Youre 100% right. London working class is w\hat sham was all about.

  • Can anyone help?

I live in Walton (down the road from Hersham). I'm curious to know where's the sign they're sitting on where it says "Hersham Road" (yes I know it's Hersham Road but whereabouts!). Just curiosity really. P.S. I've tried Google StreetView but no luck !!

  • LOL I remember this. God I feel old.

  • the song's an ironic take on the cultural plight of working class kids in the stockbroker belt. of the London suburbs. Surrounded on all sides by posh suburbs and no credible working class ID recognized by the wider culture. Paul Weller (Woking) comes out of same context -- tho he knows considerably more chords than these lads.

  • Being once blaimed 2 play just with 3 chords, Ramones'bass guitarist reacted as it follows: "True... But those R right chords!".

  • the drummer is now in 'the bootleg beatles'

  • So..... were in London is HERSHAM....

  • They cal us a cockney cowboys

  • I love how the guy on bass uses a...

    Whatever you call that.

    lol

  • its down to the York for the local girls...

  • I love the way this version is all VHS analogue f****d up...clean those heads!! haha love it!!!!

  • i love this band, greatness. even speaking as a mancunian, they dont half make being a cockney look cool haha. btw, what does 'dick eye chavvy' actually mean? feel free to let me know if you know.

  • Your Chavvies are your mates, dick eye I am not sure of the meaning/origin, but it is 100% gypsy talk, the Hersham area is full of them. The term Chav comes from Chavvies....

  • As a born n bred 'ersham boy, dig eye chavvy is 'look here mate' =D

  • Comment removed

  • I wish I'd seen the carry on that Jimmy Pursey and John Lydon had with each other at an airport a few years back - for some reason the latter hates the former!

  • They're as Cockney as musical youth!

I'm from Tottenham and a proud Londoner, but the Macc lads are far better and more genuine!

  • they were from london, musical youth were from birmingham, you do not know your west london jive yiddo boy, dick eye chavvy is pure west london badlands pikey talk.

the Macc lads were great, but not in Sham 69s class, debut 1977, prduced by john cale. nuff said mofo.

  • they were from Belgrade ....... LOL

    White riot forever

  • are you dumb or just stupid..
