How do some of you kids not know Steve Nash played for Dallas, but yet watch a Dirk video on Youtube? FYI, that guy Dirk's best friend is the guy you guys didn't know played for dallas.
@99bullshart99 because Dirk was soft back then and didnt have an inside game like he has now, and nash didnt have the 3 shot he has now...and the supporting cast wasnt as good as it is now
I think Dirk's role in the team changed in comparison to those days. The Mavs have a bunch of players who can hit from 3 point range, just look at this years playoffs. So they need Dirk to hit from midrange and force the double, which creates more space for their shooters, sorry bad English. He just uses the 3-point shot to influence the flow of the game, if they trail by a lot, because it's much more frustrating for the opponent and more motivating for the own team.
I've seen a lot of legendary conference final performances before and I never saw someone score 48 points on 15 shots, not even Jordan. Not only was Dirk extraordinarily efficient, he was doing it while hitting an array of fade away jumpers over a good defender in Ibaka. Everyone else in the league would have needed 25-30 shots to get 48 points... not Dirk. Easily the MVP and best player of the playoffs... there's nothing anyone can do to stop him form scoring.
Your logic is fine, but it also assumes that none of those 2-point attempts end in an and-one ft (old-fashioned 3-pt play), nor does it take into account attempts that end in 2 ft's (thought those aren't officially accounted as fg attempts). 3-pointers also result in the occasional and 1 4-pt play, or 3 ft's, but that is far more rare than an and-1 on 2 pt, or the 2 ft's from attacking the rim and getting fouled. NBA players are good about following the rule "never foul a jump shooter",
Dirk is NOT one dimensional.... he can shoot from anywhere, he can post-up, he can drive, he's among the best in getting to the FT line, he's been a top 15 scorer in the last 10 years (over 21,000 points and counting), he's among the best passing big-men in the last 10 years, he's been a top 10 in defensive rebounds in the last 10 years, he's made numerous clutch plays and game-winners, and plays good defense. He's done pretty much everything (except NBA title), to secure a place in the HOF.
A 3pt shot is not a low-percentage shot if you take into account that it counts 1,5 times as much as a 2 pointer.
Over his career, Dirk shoots almost 50% on 2s (substract 3p from his fg) and 38% on 3s, but those 38% equate 57% on 2s (simple example: 2/5 on 3s is as good as 3/5 on 2s).
So I'm definately in favor of the idea that he reactivates his 3p shot (just as he has done recently with 7 of 10 over the last 3 games -- 21 pts on 10 shots is something two pointers can't do for you).
@stuckonautomatic It's still a low percentage shot. It's just worth more points. But Dirk rarely gets good looks from the arc any more because he earned his respect. They just need to give it to him high post and let him do work.
@stuckonautomatic interesting point, but remember he misses more 3s than he misses 2s, which means more potential for opponents to pull away or come back if he goes for too many 3s. E.g. if he hits a 2, (which he is more likely to do), then the worst case scenario is that the opponent will then score a 3 the following play meaning they'll be 3-2 behind for the last 2 plays. But if he misses a 3, which he is more likely to do, then worst case scenario is they go 3-0 behind on the last 2 plays.
@kuyaoyster hes right! nowitski is and will always be the best shooting big man in nba history name another 7 footer with 1200 career 3's while shooting it an extremely efficient 38% thats unheard of my friend!
@halobeast411 okay my friend let us compare the two. FG Pct -- Bird wins, .496 to .472, larry has a respectable lead in this category, 3-pt pct -- Nowitzki barely wins, .378 to .376 but no big difference. FT pct. -- Bird, leading by a small amount, .88 to .872. One out of 100 free throws that Bird makes, Dirk misses. And last but not east Bird has more rings than Dirk and he is not afraid to take a game winning shot.
@disassterus i think it's cause his team needed more inside shots and dirk is the perfect guy to do it. A team wouldn't be efficient if they only shot three's or just two's
@YawningBoy ever heard the term high percentage shot ...... a three point is always a low percentage shot ... the closer the better get it got it good
@disassterus thats true but when you get closer to the basket and you have the ball the harder the other team guards you so the percentage would go down a little more
Dirk is playing much closer to the basket now, and I think it is very much on purpose. He could be the league's best shooter (even from deep) and he only takes about one 3 pt shoot per game this year.
He is just so effective in so many ways, but i do believe he's at his best at PF. He is probably had the best mid range and high post skills in the game, and maybe ever!
@selmanadzovic yeah i hope the mavs keep dirk though and build around him he's the key why they make it to playoffs every year he just needs more better players
DIRK NOWITZKI is the only 7 footer to play the CENTER, POWER FORWARD, SMALL FORWARD & THE SHOOTIN' GUARD position in the NBA. His handle is crazy sick for a 7 footer. DIRK NOWITZKI IS MY FAVORITE PLAYER, DALLAS MAVERICKS ARE MY FAVORITE TEAM & I'm not even white I'm hispanic hahahahaha.
becuz cuban wants dirk to be healthy this year since they got marion, gooden, and thomas so the mavs are now contenders again!
heres wat dirk said about this:
"I'm not mad at Cubes at all," Nowitzki said in a phone interview. "He's been great to me these last 10, 11 years. He always let me chase my dream. And we always agreed that if I made the Olympics, it would be [time] to take a break.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No... Cuban has finally stepped in and said no more. He's 30, and it's ridiculous for him to continue playing. Germany isn't Spain or the U.S. or even Argentina.... when he was 26, it helped his game. Now he needs to save his energy.
Regardless of what will be said of him, there is no doubt that Dirk has place among the NBA's All-Time Greats. His number 41 will be proudly retired, he will be proudly enshrined in the Hall of Fame, and his name alone will forever attain iconic status in the sport. Dirk Nowitzki is the name.

haha why do americans think we germans like or have anything to do with this gay night rider guy. We never liked it, never watched it, dirk never liked him. He just uses this lie to stay popular
Dirk's best 3 point shooting game ever. Shame it happened in Seattle, a place where the NBA does not exist anymore. For the meantime at least. This was also one of his best scoring performances ever.
Your just a playa hata cuz pau and marc owned dirk in the olympics. But dont get me wrong, dirk is cool, i like him to-he's on my list. but pau is just a gentle giant with plenty skill. if you think about it, kobe and pau are like jason kid and dirk
i obviously now that, but you (Germany) were in the olympics. In order to be in the olympics, a country's team must qualify. If the team was able to qualify with only two nba stars, then they should have been able to be successful in the olymics. I understand that there is a difference between qualifiers and olympic play. However, Germany playe against most of the same countries from the qualifiers in the olympics.
i think germanywould have made it to the quarter finals. But did u see the last minutes of the game against china? the refs whistled almost everything against germany. and btw: i think that dirk is better than pau (no doubt that pau is a good player, but dirk is a fromer nba-mvp, gasol wasnt even near to that title)
first of all, the refs were being irrational for all countries excluding China. so either way ever country got cheated. Second of all, although Pau was never MVP, he was never a leader. Dirk is a leader. Second, Pau thinks of the other players and trys to create plays that benefit both him and his teamates. And actualy, Pau was an MVP in Fiba Play. And he was closer to the title than dirk was.
i think dirk won the MVP in the world championship 2002 (i think it was that year) and at least a couple of times in the european championship. and pau is a good player and he was the leader of the memphis team. but i think dirk is dooing a better job :-)
well if you are looking about leadership, you should consider Dirk's team and Pau's Team. obviously, Dirk is the leader of his team because he and Jason Kidd are the real stars of that team. for the Lakers however, they have Kobe Bryant, who by himself is a great leader. with that being said, any tandom he creates- weather it be with a point guard, foward, or center can make them look good. The Lakers play as a team.
I personally have nothing against the Mavericks, in fact I think they should not have been eliminated from the play-offs. But I prefer the Lakers and their playing abilities. I also have nothing against Dirk. I think he is a great player because of his ability to shoot 3s and "work down low." But one thing is true, Dirk is getting old, he's payed his dues quite well, but he is getting old. Pau too is aging but is still quite young.
The one thing I love about this is the lack of defense on Seattle's part. After the second or third three, you might want to get get up on him just a little bit more.
Oh Nash...I wish you were with us when we won the NBA Championship. I hope you will win one before you retire!

Best shooter in the world!...he needs to find a way to take more three's and take advantage of his shooting greatness

@nowitzki41icon
the best shooter is ray allen. if you're talking about size + shooting ability, then kevin durant is the best.

Dirk's best 3 point shooting game ever. Shame it happened in Seattle, a place where the NBA does not exist anymore. For the meantime at least. This was also one of his best scoring performances ever.

Your just a playa hata cuz pau and marc owned dirk in the olympics. But dont get me wrong, dirk is cool, i like him to-he's on my list. but pau is just a gentle giant with plenty skill. if you think about it, kobe and pau are like jason kid and dirk

wow compare the spanish team with the german... spain has plenty nba players, we only have 2...
bubibobo 3 years ago
i obviously now that, but you (Germany) were in the olympics. In order to be in the olympics, a country's team must qualify. If the team was able to qualify with only two nba stars, then they should have been able to be successful in the olymics. I understand that there is a difference between qualifiers and olympic play. However, Germany playe against most of the same countries from the qualifiers in the olympics.
lakerspeedstaker93 3 years ago
i think germanywould have made it to the quarter finals. But did u see the last minutes of the game against china? the refs whistled almost everything against germany. and btw: i think that dirk is better than pau (no doubt that pau is a good player, but dirk is a fromer nba-mvp, gasol wasnt even near to that title)
bubibobo 3 years ago 4
first of all, the refs were being irrational for all countries excluding China. so either way ever country got cheated. Second of all, although Pau was never MVP, he was never a leader. Dirk is a leader. Second, Pau thinks of the other players and trys to create plays that benefit both him and his teamates. And actualy, Pau was an MVP in Fiba Play. And he was closer to the title than dirk was.
lakerspeedstaker93 3 years ago
i think dirk won the MVP in the world championship 2002 (i think it was that year) and at least a couple of times in the european championship. and pau is a good player and he was the leader of the memphis team. but i think dirk is dooing a better job :-)
bubibobo 3 years ago
well if you are looking about leadership, you should consider Dirk's team and Pau's Team. obviously, Dirk is the leader of his team because he and Jason Kidd are the real stars of that team. for the Lakers however, they have Kobe Bryant, who by himself is a great leader. with that being said, any tandom he creates- weather it be with a point guard, foward, or center can make them look good.

Man, the Sonics almost look like they're letting him make em, some defense! Dirk's so good...
TranBoys 3 years ago
The one thing I love about this is the lack of defense on Seattle's part. After the second or third three, you might want to get get up on him just a little bit more.
dmvp41 3 years ago
totally true, but the last one was like "come on foul me, i ´ll score either way" ... soooo good ... dirk is the best
speedfestival 3 years ago 7
no thats how the NBA defense works, its amazing how it is. The more they make, the more they leave him open, its the NBA unspoken rule.
NafeesLACC 3 years ago
haha i remember this game. As unbelievable Dirks shooting stroke was this game the mavs needed Anotine fn walker to win the game at the buzzer :)
