@MadNerf Sorry dude, it is a product of a Special Effects Company. To sell it for any less means no profit for the company and hence no food on my table.
@MadNerf Okay I'll try to be as nice as I can while I say this. I know nothing about you. How many different LARPs do you go to? With how many different groups in how many different nations? How well spoken are you within those groups? Do you know anything about Europen boffer weapons, their styles or safety rules?
For all I know you are just some kid trying to talk his way into getting a free boffer weapon because hw wants one but doesn't want to pay for it like everyone lese does.
Sorry to bother you again, but how did you make the edge so soft? I have PlatiDipped my blue foam boffer, beveled an edge and everything, but it feels pretty rough to get hit by it. It also doesn't have a smooth look on the edge either. Are you using a different kind of latex for a final layer?
@itachi1303 Use sandpaper to smooth the edge and sides. apply a light layer of glue (dap) to the foam, and let dry until tacky. LIGHTLY brush on a very think layer. let dry until almost dry. Do it again, and again. The final layet to get smoothness, there and onlu then would I use a spray plastidip. Then spray paint it. To make the impact softer you also need to put small holes so air can escape (normally near the hilt)
What did you use to make the beveling? Seems like you either used a razor or some kind of cylindrical shaped sander. The reason I'm asking is because I have crackhead hands and cannot keep a razor nice and straight, so I end up sawing with the razor, making the beveling all wavy.
@ogunshi You should make a tutorial on that. I know that it's an easy thing(or at least I think it is), but I'm a hyperactive moron that tends to mess things up.
Big fan from Sweden here( Though I'm very new to LARP ).
Was woundering if that weapon have a fiberglass-core and if you cut it by hand or if you used some kind of pre-made shape container( Don't know the English word for it) which you poured it in?

@AndyFrogLee IT is still holding up just fine and dandy. It is used about 2 to 3 times a week in full contact fights. The only thing I did to it was give it a new paint job.
As for Amtgard, I don't know. I haven't been to an Amtgard event for close to 6 years.
your boffer looks amazing, i really do like the latex ones better they look nicer and in the midst of battle they can be quite more intimidating than one wrapped up in duct tape, the quality and craftsmanship seems alot better to :D
@mm1aa1x Get liquid latwx at a hobby store and mix in latex pigmet until you get the color you want. After you have on the last layer of latex wait until it is a bit tacky and then add on the colored latex. let dry and repeat several times. That is the correct way.
If you want quiick and dirty, after you put on the final coat, hit it with a heavy coat of spray paint can of metalic color. Thepaint well bond to the still wet coating.
What is the name brand & product # of your Liquid Latex you like to use? I have called all over Seattle but when I describe what I am talking about; they do not know what I am talking about so, if I had a name brand it would be a big help :-)
@itachi1303 Yes it is plastidip on blue foam. BUT you are looking at it in Dagorhir standards. There is no 1 1/2 inch thick blade. The stricking surface on that edge is closer to 1/4 inch thick.
Look at it in terms of an openhanded slap on an arm and a chop with the side of the hand. The slap is going to hurt more then the chop in light contact hitting.

Look at some of my other videos I'm going into how to make a latex weapon.
As for tips, yes it is possiable to add a thrusting tip onto the tip of the weapon. Sadly NERO likes the tips on weapons in their game to be rather big and hence look unrealistic and comical at best.
i am new 2 larping and would love 2 try it out but i cant find a larp group near spring hill or tampa florida if n e 1 can help me plz message me back
That all depends on 5 gallons of what, as in what kind of latex, and what kind of weapons are you refering to? A dagger is going to use a lot less material then say a broad sword. Also how many coats are you putting on each weapon. Then there is the last question of how long is that latex going to be good? Latex has a bad habid of going bad only days after you open the container
Honestly I do not call that a boffer. It would be insulting to the weapon. Since if you see what a boffer would be. The actual boffers are round silly and simply goofy looking. But otherwise I love it.
With a foam paintbrush. You put on a thin layer and let it set for a while. Then add another layer, and another and another until you have the thickness you feel is right.
Okay here is the main thing. Yes I can set about making you a sword and put some good work into it, but it may nor be legal in some LARPs. The best thing to do is first find a LARP and read up n thier safety rules. Then when you have a group, find out what weapon you like the best. As the lowest I could go on a custom latex blade is in the ball park of $50 to $100, I don't want you to spend a lot fo money to find you can't use it in a LARP you want to join.
im confused with all these different names.... whats the dif... Could this be used for larp. cause larp interests me i havnt gone yet but im thinking about it.
The main thing is finding the LARP uou are wanting to join and then looking over their safety guidelines. It seems that every group out there has different ideas as to what is a safe boffer weapon. Some allow the weapons to have points while others require 2 inches of soft foam on the tip.
Still find the group first and then look for a boffer weapon that is suited to you
This totally inspire me to take up the helmet facemask again, i coudn't cut the rubber yet that thin or neat to roud it around the chin, But it seems possible afteral, can you regrip your hand as you retreave ye swing when hit? or do you have to little moving space? when gripping?
very nice looking, however i wouldn't sudjest it for battle, now this is just a little constructive criticism so dont take it for an attack, you say its a cross between a rapier and saber but balanced as a Katana; thats not a well balanced weapon in the fact that it has the handle for a saber (a sabers handle is one handed and same goes for a rapier) not a katana a katana is a two handed weapon and useing it with one hand with out a second weapon takes away from its efficenticy
Thanks for the info. Althought I already know most of it, it is nive to get others points of view.
The client wanted it that way and I had to use what I had on hand. It is still in active use in Khaos and holding up better then a lot of the store bought ones. As for balance of a katana all it means is that it is hilt heave, rather then blade heavy.
do you use two or three laiers i want to now because i going to make a sword so i want to now if i going to use two or three laiers i ask because u are the best wapon builder i have seen ind a dont have money to spend on bying a larp wapons so pleas help me whit this
It all depends on what material I am using on the outside of the weapon. If I am brushing latex I do about 12 to 15 coats. Grip Dip is 3 to 4 coats (it's fairly think) and PlastiGrip if brushed it's 3 to 4 coats, if sprayed its 25 to 30 coats. I hope this helps.
on that subject, I wanted to know if there was any texture differences in what you use to coat the weapon. like, is latex smoother then grip dip? or are there any factors that should can effect what I use? I'm looking for something smooth and rubbery and wanted to ask what might be best before I go out and buy something that might not be what I'm looking for.
If you have the time and a dust dree area, go with the spray on plasti grip. It is what I use for all my high end combat blades. Of course I, personally, go for about 50 thin coats. It coats nice and smooth and allows for the detial work in the foam to show through. But be warned the spriy NEEDS to be done in a dust free area. The less air movement the better..
In all honesty use simple sprat paint. It doesn't cost that much, looks good and should stay on for a few months, even with heavy use. Then all you need to do is do touch ups every now and then or change the colors all together.
awesome, that's kinda what I was hoping to hear :D I've been doing space painting for a while so I know how to get some neat spray paint effects. If your unfamiliar with space painting there's a ton of videos here on youtube.
oh god... you know when inspiration hits you out of no where? I just got an idea for a "flaming flamberge " using reds and oranges :D If I make it I'll videotape it and upload it as a reply to this.
You should see some of the newer things I am working on. I've messed around with some electronics for the newer swords. Now in the KHAOS LARP when a troll monster appears the blade glows.
We are also making LARP helms with night vision. Of course it is only because we are REALLY big geeks.
my god that is epic... you should really post video of some of that stuff some time. I have a massive amount of LEDs laying about so maybe I'll try something like that too.
and you don't have to tell me about being a geek. my senior year of high school I founded my schools RPG club. we had like 40 members that and it's still going strong. so yeah, geeky and nerdy is about 95% of my life :)
It's amazing! Well maybe the blade needs a little bit of work but still, it's cool you made it in just a week, it would have taken me a YEAR! Please keep making weapons & upload the videos they're really cool.
I was trying a different faom cutting concept for the blade. The good part is that it makes the blade stronger and can handle more wear and tear then normal, the bad part is that is makes it a lot harder to make look good. But it is all trial and error.
Nope no online store as of yet for the latex weapons. Of course I do do movie special effects for a living, the making of latex weapons are more of a hobby at this time then anything else.
I answer what I can without giving away too many trade secrets
1. The core is a yellow snow marker.
2. Yes I use DAP and other glues as well
3. I'm not using latex, it's too weak. I use GripDip
4. My first GripDip was made over 3 years ago and still holding. I used spray paint to paint it every now and then I need to re spray it but I do diferent colors so it is like a new sword every time
5. None what so ever. I explain that it is not for their game but for K.H.A.O.S.
well thats weird because u made like a exact version of a basic calvary saber actually it looks like 1860 u.s heavy calvary saber well whatever it is u did a spectacular job
I didn't follow any blueprints. I know it is going to sound corn, but I just kept cutting until it felt right. Sort of how the blade wanted to be shaped. I used no photos or blueprints.
I have made the next one, and the one after that as well. I'm on my fouth test one at the moment. But like all of them you'll need to wait until it is ready to be seen.
what is the latex called and what kind that you used?

The less air movement the better..

thanks alot Ogunshi, I'll give the spray a shot :)
another small question, and I'm sorry to bug ya, but do you have any recommendations for paint?
nekoheehee 3 years ago
In all honesty use simple sprat paint. It doesn't cost that much, looks good and should stay on for a few months, even with heavy use. Then all you need to do is do touch ups every now and then or change the colors all together.

awesome, that's kinda what I was hoping to hear :D I've been doing space painting for a while so I know how to get some neat spray paint effects. If your unfamiliar with space painting there's a ton of videos here on youtube.
oh god... you know when inspiration hits you out of no where? I just got an idea for a "flaming flamberge " using reds and oranges :D If I make it I'll videotape it and upload it as a reply to this.
thanks again for the advice :)

You should see some of the newer things I am working on. I've messed around with some electronics for the newer swords. Now in the KHAOS LARP when a troll monster appears the blade glows.
We are also making LARP helms with night vision. Of course it is only because we are REALLY big geeks.
ogunshi 3 years ago
my god that is epic... you should really post video of some of that stuff some time.

But it is all trial and error.

so do you have an online store or something?
zig3 3 years ago
Nope no online store as of yet for the latex weapons. Of course I do do movie special effects for a living, the making of latex weapons are more of a hobby at this time then anything else.

can you make a schyte?
orberst 3 years ago
Yes is it possiable, but to use it for full contact combat LARPs is not going to work.
ogunshi 3 years ago

Online are a bunch of elven translators. You can find translators for almost anything. The elven writing on this blade reads "Short Sword +2"

looks pretty, where's the walk through on how to make it?

I answer what I can without giving away too many trade secrets
1. The core is a yellow snow marker.
2. Yes I use DAP and other glues as well
3. I'm not using latex, it's too weak. I use GripDip
4. My first GripDip was made over 3 years ago and still holding. I used spray paint to paint it every now and then I need to re spray it but I do diferent colors so it is like a new sword every time
5. None what so ever. I explain that it is not for their game but for K.H.A.O.S.

well thats weird because u made like a exact version of a basic calvary saber actually it looks like 1860 u.s heavy calvary saber well whatever it is u did a spectacular job
pirateboy12 3 years ago
Thank you very much. I'll try to post more of the weapons I'm making in the near future.
ogunshi 3 years ago
wow im surprised u did very well on that blade if im not mistaken did u copy a calvary saber for the blueprints of the blades structure
pirateboy12 3 years ago
Thank you.
I didn't follow any blueprints. I know it is going to sound corn, but I just kept cutting until it felt right. Sort of how the blade wanted to be shaped. I used no photos or blueprints.
