I just arrived home from a Europe tour with a school group. We spent four days in the UK, and when we arrived, we left St Pancras Station, and our guide played "God Save the Queen" on the bus stereo system. Then, most of the people in my group started singing "My Country 'Tis of Thee." That was just despicable. That is the ultimate show of arrogance. Of 28 Americans on that bus, I was the only one who sang "God Save the Queen," and I'm willing to bet I'm the only one who knew the words.

The UK has some stunningly beautiful anthems; my favourite is "Land of Hope and Glory", but this is far better than our bastardized version of the same song. The arrangement, too, is fantastic.

I always thought this was such a boring anthem, but hearing this version of it made me adore it. I think it's one of Britten's finest achievements, it's just a shame this version is rather too subtle to be performed more often. Still, I think Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory should be our National Amthem, and I'm as royalist as one can get.

Been a colony has bad connotations but is not necessarily a bad thing; for instance we removed a lot of oppressive and ruthless rules, we gave India a sense of nationality, we held back malaria in Africa etc... things that are unlikely to have happened on there own, they my not have been free in the sense of been independent sovereign states, but they were free people.

The UK has some stunningly beautiful anthems; my favourite is "Land of Hope and Glory", but this is far better than our bastardized version of the same song. The arrangement, too, is fantastic.

And she is primarily Queen of England and this is in the English capital. The Scotish sing about how great Scotland is all the time, why can't the English sing about how great England is?

I always thought this was such a boring anthem, but hearing this version of it made me adore it. I think it's one of Britten's finest achievements, it's just a shame this version is rather too subtle to be performed more often. Still, I think Jerusalem or Land of Hope and Glory should be our National Amthem, and I'm as royalist as one can get.
