  • The Koch brothers penned this tax payers pledge and finance this puppet to spread the pledge of communism.

  • We must abide by the old principle, "Everything in moderation", especially in politics. Politicians must not go too far in cutting or raising taxes. They must not go too far in protecting us or refusing to protect us. Guys like Norquist don't understand this. There are also some on the Left who are equally as guilty.

  • If you ask me, we should turn into a meritocracy. I'm sick of having to vote for shitty candidates and the lesser of 2 evils! I'm sick of the worst bureaucrats leading our agencies. We need to have a system where you MUST have a good knowledge of history, statistics, policy, economics, and good education and test scores before you can run for office or serve in a bureaucracy. Because of that lack of accountability, we keep nominating worse and worse candidates. Gore, Kerry, and now Obama??

  • I think it's not even about principles or good policy with guys like Norquist. They just want an excuse to keep bitching. They don't wanna lose their jobs. Norquist is head of Americans for Tax Reform, and if Norquist and his cronies realized they're fighting a battle that's just not worth it, they'd have to disband their group and do something else. And I don't think Norquist is qualified for much else. Politics is one of the only fields where you don't have to be very qualified to serve.

  • I'm also sick of how these elitist Republican assholes and talk show hosts and heads of special interest groups claim to be speaking for all Americans, esp. when they kiss the asses of the rich. "The rich pay the most in taxes." Yeah, bozo, that may be true, but they can AFFORD to pay so much because it doesn't hurt them like it would hurt middle and lower-class individuals. They always ignore middle and low-class tax cuts in a person's platform and focus so much on the rich tax hikes.

  • Plus, why do you have to cling to your money so much like greedy motherfuckers? Just pay taxes and stop worrying! Sure, it'd be nice if the free market could cure poverty, but the fact is, it can't. It can't even raise nearly as much money to pay for antipoverty programs as the federal gov't can, so you're living in a dream world. Your tax dollars are going to be spent either way, so why not support antipoverty programs? They're really not all that inefficient. That's a myth.

  • We have some of the lowest personal incomes taxes in our history! Yet the Republicans and assholes like Norquist here say "That's not low enough." What IS low enough?? 20%? 10%? You won't even generate that much revenue, and we'll get higher deficits. Do these extremist tax-cutters think before they speak?

Norquist, give it up. We're not getting rid of the income tax, and it's not that big a deal, anyhow. Tax rate is fine. Most Americans are not board with you, so STFU.

  • You know, are there really any polls that say that most Americans are so against modest tax increases?? Sure, a lot of conservatives are, but I don't think most Americans feel the way these groups do with far-right positions on taxes, like Club for Growth and Americans for Tax Reform. Sometimes, you're gonna hafta raise taxes. That's the reality. You can't put your heads in the sand and say "No tax increases! ever!"

Just bear it. Deal w/ a slight tax increase and stop whining.

  • The fact is, most Americans are moderate, not conservative or liberal. Each special interest group only has a relative handful of Americans who believe a certain way. They usually don't have even close to half of Americans in their ranks. Not even 20%, except for perhaps AARP.

  • souixz: my exact thoughts. it's the idea of, "the people would love for me to promise that, so I will." however, there are so many cases in which sometimes that is, indeed, the best solution at hand. moreover, I personally stand by the idea of making promises as infrequently as possible -- they lock you down too heavily.

  • I do not think I could support a candidate that would promise to not raise taxes. I am smart enough to know sometimes it is what has to be done to deal with a specfic problem. I trust Fred Thompson to make the right choice.

  • Grover, give it a rest. You do not represent the American people. This pledge is about YOU and YOUR GROUP. Pretending otherwise is unbecoming.

  • gorver, what about inflation, war spending????????

  • To be honest I dont know if a flat tax is the answer to our problems, but I like Ron pauls consistency, which no other candidate has. I can trust him on some policies so I assume i can trust him on others (which isnt a good argument but I cannot trust any other candidate at all!) The only problem I do understand with the income tax is that loopholes can be manipulated by the wealthy hedge funds so they pay LESS than the average joe.

  • In NH we have the CNHT pledge and any person who won't take it should not be elected.

  • In the bible Jesus said pay your taxes and don't worry about them because money has nothing to do with me or my kingdom. Yet self proclaimed Christians candidates seem to worry more about taxes than the poor, health care, or war and peace.

  • True charity has to come from the heart. The "widow's mite" was donated voluntarily. Taxes are taken by force. I would absolutely love to take the money I pay in taxes right now and be able to choose a charity for them.

  • Grover, what is your opinion on the YouTube debate question picks? I think the fact they picked your question defeated the purpose of th debate. They handpicked idiotic questions about the bible and spoonfed Huckabee, at the same time they picked questions for Ron Paul that included one that said he has no chance of winning the Republican nomination AND one that called his supporters conspiracy theorists.

  • Not only does Ron Paul vote against taxes but returns a portion of his budget to the treasury every year. Now that is a man who has the ability to run our nation. Go Dr. Paul and win!

  • I know Ron Paul has never voted for a tax increase but he has a plan to do away with most taxes, where as the other's don't. As much as I hate taxes (and I pay a lot of them where I live as well as FICA) we need a military and at least some government, so taxes are a necessary evil.

  • Ron Paul = no income tax. How much better does it get than that

  • yea i know but Huckabee pulled that little trick out of the hat in the debate too. (I hate him for that) If Huckabee is elected, he will RAISE SPENDING. Isn't that worse than raising taxes? That is what we have in the white house right now. Why dont republicans pledge a balanced budget instead of no taxes?

  • Ron Paul did pledge for a balanced budget and has voted that way for 20 years every time.

Ron Paul has pledged to cut spending in half

as well as abolish the income tax

    That is a trifecta.

  • im for paul, because says no income tax and less spending, but my point was that huckabee is trying to use the no IRS point to gain supporters, even though his policies would be exactly like another big spending G.W. I would like to see Huckabee pledge a less spending pledge so we can stop the spending and NOT use this no IRS point just as rhetoric. (I wouldnt vote for him anyway but he would have more credibility)

  • figures, Ron Paul is the only one who has never voted for a tax increase

    Ron Paul 2008
