@KatesPinkZeppelin I totally hear that now you've said it. The intro is so beautiful, and that's why - it reminds me of the guitar solo bit in Wuthering Heights. Well noticed! xx
This is probably one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard from an amazing album. You have to be so gifted to bring something so stunningly gorgeous out of your head and onto a record.
ok, ok... i have knew PJ Harvey until today just from her live show at Brit Awards with Bjork singing Satisfaction. i knew nothing about her. but this song is....... AMAZING. goosebumps
This is one of the first albums I have heard that tries to express the dire situation we all are in; the on going wars, the death of beauty and spiritual life (what "England" used to mean to her) "I have searched for your springs, but people stagnate with time, like water or air. Undaunted, never-falling love for you, England, is all, to which I cling" PJ Harvey. Sadly, she is right,;like the love a woman has for her wife beating husband, hoping ,but knowing, there will be no change...
I love how there are so many interpretations of "cruel nature", such as those in the comments before. Also, cruel nature could also refer to nature itself being cruel (i.e. natural disasters, avalanches, flooding, gargantuan waves, etc). And when nature is cruel, it always wins.
PJ Harvey said she wanted the lyrics to this album to be open to interpretation. In this age of politics, that can open the music up to being propaganda. "Cruel nature has won again" is an interesting line and can almost be used to sum up the philosophy of the album. While I believe nature is indeed cruel, Buddhists believe that ultimate nature is loving and compassionate. I love the album and I hope the peace sign on John Parrish's guitar is sincere.
@gloobyclamshakes01 really? u gave me a different perspective, i took the quote as meaning the nature of being cruel, meaning cruelty is winning, while kindness is losing in this day and age
@JFlyer08 after I wrote it down, I got the cruel nature of humanity aspect of it, too. What bothers me is that pro-war people justify war by saying that "it's the way of the world," or "survival of the fittest". While I agree they have a point, the argument needs to be taken further, as in Buddhism, saying: the "way of the world" is capable of being transcended and needs to be.
@CamMcKayJPN, yeah, what the previous post says. Check out the Mansize vid (with Pj sitting in her knickers on a chair). AMAZING. You've really been missing out these past years.
@khanell786 Correct. The whole thing is on YouTube and it is playing in my office again today as we speak.
However, whilst I love using YouTube, I do wonder how long the posting of artists' materials can go on without charge. I believe it is technically possible to download from YouTube to Mp3.
On "Let England Shake", PJ Harvey has truly caught lightening in a bottle. It's just one of those albums, and "On Battleship Hill" is a perfect example. It's so right, so beautiful, so perfect. I am in complete awe of this new album.
