Band! I would never have guessed that La Cathedrale Engloutie would be arranged for band! How good! So glad that these performers get to do this piece!
Great recording! I personally am not a fan of the quicker tempo at the climax (as a solo pianist), I prefer the slower and majestic (mind you, not boring) tempo, but still, this is the best band arrangement on YouTube that I can find. Very nice, thank you for uploading!
If I were Debussy, I would really love to play this at this tempo.. alternation of 6/4 and 3/2 is allowed. It depends on the interpretation. Anyway, whether slow or faster, it's undoubtedly beautiful and optimistic.
Decades ago, I played in high school band, college orchesta and night orchestra at my high school. This is a good recording. Amazingly clear. Whoever did the recording on this did a beautiful job. Very good for a high school concert band! I think Debussy's music is great and this is wonderful either as a piano solo or orchestrated. I could listen to this piece for hours! Thanks for the posting.
I agree. Our high school band played this, and yes, it should definitely be slower.. The part where the trumpets come in is wayy too fast. At a slower speed, they seem much more.....stuffed with emotion. I can't really find the right word for it...
in any case, my favourite part is the end where the horns play.... it gave me chills at the performance.
I am well aware of that fact as I was in the band. In fact I played on this performance. And I was actually trying to defend the performance. And as great as the band has been in the past and still is it still can't match the musicianship of the Northwestern Wind Ensemble. Check them out on itunes. They have some beautiful stuff
i dont think it's all that fast at all...have you heard it slower? this is the only rendition i've ever heard...this was christmas of my junior year at bell, and they're the only one's i've ever heard play it, which is a shame, because it's beautiful...i cant recall finding it elsewhere on youtube, which is partially why i posted it...
However, the true God took pity upon his few virtuous subjects who had continued to believe in him and decreed that once every century, on the anniversary of the citys destruction, the cathedral would emerge from the sea for one day, then return to its watery shroud.
i've never heard that legend, just the one i put in the info...but it sounds kind of interesting...the only problem is that God would not have submerged them in the first place...
The legend of the cathedral of a mighty city (the legendary city of Ys) The inhabitants of the city had built a mighty and splendiferous cathedral to honor their new Christian god. However, they continued to pay homage to their previous pagan deities, and gradually ignored Him for whom they had built the beautiful edifice, bringing upon themselves a natural catastrophe that submerged the entire city beneath the sea.
when you invision the song you dont want to imgain the kingdom drowing but the cathedral rising from the ocean every hundred years

Wow. I NEVER thought there could be a band arrangement of Debussy that I would like. Props to whoever did that!

I have never heard an orchestral arrangement of this piece...it's gorgeous

Northwestern played it slower in 2005

You're comparing a high school band to one of the best college wind ensembles in the world.
And for the record, I have a recording of the composer playing on piano, it lasts 5:01

not as a wind arrangement, i mean. i've found piano renditions on youtube, and it's not a whole lot faster than any of them...
