OMG, Male opera singers are so &^%$# sexy. The crowd really starts jumpin' when Texas Tech guy walks in.... Love this video - everyone there is smiling and enjoying it. Thank you Knight Foundation!
I am amazed at the number of people who bring cameras to the market to go shopping. (And yes, I can recognize the difference between a camera and a cell phone.)
Kudos to the Opera Company of Philadelphia for doing it! Our tv and radio refuse to broadcast opera, so they take the things into their hands. Fantastic!
The "black" guy (I don't want to call him African American because I am not sure if he is American lol) looks just like a typical shopper at the Reading Terminal Market. This performance is fantastic but now I have it stuck in my head which is bad because I only know three words "Toreador en garde."
Absolutely stunning! One of the best things ever to happen in a Mall in years. Especially liked the audience reactions. Quality performances by Philly voices. Bravo & Brava!
my brother's opinion not mine (i swear so don't hate me) he says " I can sing them into the ground." he's a professional opera singer nd he's a diva. but i loved it those guys were so good!!!
While Texas Tech guy was walking in, I thought, "What is he thinking, just barging through on his phone and ignoring this?!" And then he opened his mouth and started singing. :) Tutti bravi!
I have a love hate relationship with Carmen - I have seen some really bad ones and some striking ones and it is not to do with the singing but the staging - I hate it when they stand and sing in trad costumes and don't think about what is actually happening and it is about some of the poorer people in society - the last Bielefeld production was good as it was in a 1930s factory - and the singers, as always, acted as well.
I also think Carmen should be called Don José as he changes and develops.
I'm really glad that The OCP did this. They're doing a great deal for communal, and national awareness of opera and its beauty. Keep up the great work guys! I hope that you do this again some day, and hope that more companies around the country will follow in your footsteps!
if you think their performance is terrific culture, don't miss the incredible cultural food selections available at Philadelphia's Raading Terminal Market - WOW!
Very cool! And around the 2:35 mark is a non-singing cameo of Andrew Foster-Williams enjoying the perfomance (baritone soloist who performed masterfully in Mozart's Requiem this weekend).
OCP, you make all of Philadelphia and singers everywhere proud. You're doing exactly what opera needs: the removal of the stuffy stigma it's carried around all these years and a chance for people to see that it is, in fact, one hell of a show. Bravi to these singers and to the entire company for its vision!

This is my favorite of the "random acts of culture" so far. Bravo!
Notice how most of the older people in the crowd immediately recognize the song, but everyone else are just clueless about it.
