I got a ticket from a cop at 7-years-old for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk. I got another one at 10 for the same thing. Went to bicycle traffic school. I was a respectful kid. They were DICKS! Some should get off the force and kill termites and rats for a living or something.

As far as them having nothing better to do, who knows. There may have been a crime in progress or radio call they could have been responding to instead of hassling some random woman, but that would be even worse. There is no reason for the stop and far less for her to comply with the officer. Her first question should have been, am I free to go. If he continued to hold her at that point her case would have been very simple. It would have been a blatant seizure of her person. IE:detainment. Probable cause is absolutely required for that. Talking to the police will invariably cause problems.
This discussion is a great snapshot of our country the way it is now. 3. I believe everyone should have the right to own and carry guns, but when confronted by a police officer you should ALWAYS tell him right away that you have a firearm on you, where it is, and if you have a liscense to have that firearm.
Why would the officer need to know if you have a firearm unless your had committed a crime? How many police officers notify you that they have a weapon?
It's called courtesy. If your belongings are being searched then it is common courtesy to tell the police officer that there is something in there that could kill him, rather than suprise him.

I don't know where you live, but here in NH you are not required to carry your licenses with you. If the officer asks, you are only required to give your name and the town or city you live in, and if the officer wants to verify that you were issued a concealed handgun license, they can contact the department that issued your license. You really shouldn't make assumptions. It makes you look really dumb.

Perhaps if she had been paying attention (listening to her surroundings, eyes level) she could have noticed the police car, and most likely a voice saying something to the effect of "Ma'am... Ma'am, stop walking... Police, stop walking" Then from there the police officers level of detainment might not have increased to one of them grabbing her arm. If she would have stopped the first time they asked her to... then we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Also she says she wasn't listening to the police, or paying any attention (headphones looking down). which is a great thing to do when walking around at night (just kidding its a really dumb thing to do). She was carrying a handgun, what if the person grabbing her wasn't a cop but a mugger who over powers her before she can react. then she has just given the mugger a handgun. If you are carrying a firearm, you need to be aware of all your surroundings at all times.
I would have handled it in a much different way but would have gotten the same result. If she did not have a photo ID then I would not let her go until i had a positive ID of her. a police officer has the right to ask for ID from anyone he/she feels is out of place. If this officer felt this woman was out of place then that's his probable cause. I use to work as an armed security guard in section 8 housing communities, i can't count on two hands how many people i've stopped for simply walking at night through the neighborhood and found they had priors or concealing a weapon/drugs or other illegal contraband.

Officer attitudes also seem different in Oklahoma/Texas. Each time I have been pulled over the officers do not really make a big deal about the CCW. One time I was stopped by a cop while walking down the street at 2am. I gave the cop my ID and CCW and told him I have a glock on my right hip. Once he ran my license (I was clean) he let me go. No problems.

If I was a police offer, I would be ready for my gun anytime I had reason to believe my life was in danger. A person I am questioning that I now believe to be armed would be enough reason for me. He didn't draw his weapon after all, he only reached for it in case the situation arose.
Not in NH. NH law does not require you to tell a cop that you are armed. Please don't spew profanity laced derogatory misinformation in my direction. I was sleeping in my car in an otherwise empty parking lot because I was too tired to drive when the police officer woke me up and asked me to submit to a sobriety test. As far as I was concerned, it was none of his business that I was packing a pair of pistols. Telling a cop that you have a gun usually just complicates things.
Once when I let a cop know that I was carrying, he held onto my pistols for at least 45 minutes until he was finished verifying that they were legal. That delay caused me to be late for a meeting.
I guess he should have ASSUMED they were legal and let you go on your merry way. It's a good thing no one ever uses guns for armed robberies or anything.
that depends on the state in which you live. they can ask if you have those items on you but they cant do anything to you if you have the right "papers" to own and carry said items

the officer was very polite to her, and was merely wanting to make sure she was safe. he was very curtious, and it was her that was a jerk to the officer. she was immature, short tempered, and disrespectful. She actions that night, to a LEO or civilian, were down-right disrespectful.

I got a ticket from a cop at 7-years-old for riding a bicycle on the sidewalk. I got another one at 10 for the same thing. Went to bicycle traffic school. I was a respectful kid. They were DICKS! Give cops a bad name, like the worst of their kind. My sis was a cop. Did her job to clean up trash, but respected rights. If there is no curfew and she is an adult just jogging down the street, then they have no crime to investigate. There is no legal reason to hassle her. As far as them having nothing better to do, who knows. There may have been a crime in progress or radio call they could have been responding to instead of hassling some random woman, but that would be even worse. So I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt they had nothing better to do instead of ignoring a real call to go bug this lady.

The cop was out of line based on what she said and his son demonstrated that he has no class. I'm embarrassed for the kid's father that he has to have his son on video behaving so poorly. It is one thing for the kid to politely disagree and want to support his father but to call her a "bitch" shows a lack of class on the kid's part that reflects very poorly on his father and the rest of his family. The kid needs to learn about treating people you disagree with with respect and decency.

There is no reason for the stop and far less for her to comply with the officer. Her first question should have been, am I free to go. If he continued to hold her at that point her case would have been very simple. It would have been a blatant seizure of her person. IE:detainment. Probable cause is absolutely required for that. Talking to the police will invariably cause problems.

The woman did nothing wrong if she was following the states law on CCW, there was no reason to hold her. She was well within her rights. There was no probable cause to stop her in the first place. The kid says, "how was he supposed to know if you hadn't broken down." We don't pay cops to be psychic. She didn't wave him down, therefore she didn't want him to stop to help. I don't know where you live, but here in NH you are not required to carry your licenses with you. If the officer asks, you are only required to give your name and the town or city you live in, and if the officer wants to verify that you were issued a concealed handgun license, they can contact the department that issued your license. You really shouldn't make assumptions. It makes you look really dumb.

yes the kid got frustrated with this woman and didn't present himself well at all, but listen to the woman tell how she delt with the police officer, thats only going to highten his level of action and will only aggrivate the situation. if she had been alert (as she should be when carrying a concealed firearm) and responded with "yes officer i have my ID, here it is." but she had no photo ID. giving the police officer within his duty the right to detain her until he found her actual identity.

we dont know the area she was in, perhaps she stood out to this officer and he stopped her. from there on out, things could have been different if she just presented her ID along with her concealed firearm ID. this is being blown way out of porportion, its a simple stop in question of ones idenity. i've been stopped plenty of times for riding my bike around town after dark, i have no problem with it, cause i have my ID and respond well to police cause i have nothing to hide.

Perhaps if she had been paying attention (listening to her surroundings, eyes level) she could have noticed the police car, and most likely a voice saying something to the effect of "Ma'am... Ma'am, stop walking... Police, stop walking" Then from there the police officers level of detainment might not have increased to one of them grabbing her arm. If she would have stopped the first time they asked her to... then we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Also she says she wasn't listening to the police, or paying any attention (headphones looking down). which is a great thing to do when walking around at night (just kidding its a really dumb thing to do). She was carrying a handgun, what if the person grabbing her wasn't a cop but a mugger who over powers her before she can react. then she has just given the mugger a handgun. If you are carrying a firearm, you need to be aware of all your surroundings at all times.

this woman was out walking at night and was stopped by a cop. she should be thankful it wasn't someone trying to either mug her or worse. excessive would be if he handcuffed her, put her into the back of his cruiser or worst case became physical and sprayed her with pepper spray when or if she tried to pull away. a police officer has the right to ask for ID from anyone he/she feels is out of place. If this officer felt this woman was out of place then that's his probable cause. I use to work as an armed security guard in section 8 housing communities, i can't count on two hands how many people i've stopped for simply walking at night through the neighborhood and found they had priors or concealing a weapon/drugs or other illegal contraband.

the answer is... you're out walking at night! perhaps the cop shouldn't have held you against your will. Then he asked for your ID and i'm sure he was asking for your state provided photo ID, then you have to present it. Well, I think that in most cases, such as this, that is a bit excessive, but I would agree that such violations should be grounds for removing those officers from their positions.

Officer attitudes also seem different in Oklahoma/Texas. Each time I have been pulled over the officers do not really make a big deal about the CCW. One time I was stopped by a cop while walking down the street at 2am. I gave the cop my ID and CCW and told him I have a glock on my right hip. Once he ran my license (I was clean) he let me go. No problems.

that kid was a little bitch you dont have to tell a cop in most places that you have a gun and even if they ask you if you're armed well theres not a whole lot they can do about it if you have a permit. I was pulled over once and forgot my drives ID some place but had my permit to carry and showed that to the cop who asked if i was armed I wasn't at the time but he put his hand on his gun like i was going to pull out on his ass... I never would but I didn't like that fact that he reachd for his.

If I was a police offer, I would be ready for my gun anytime I had reason to believe my life was in danger. A person I am questioning that I now believe to be armed would be enough reason for me. He didn't draw his weapon after all, he only reached for it in case the situation arose.

Not in NH. NH law does not require you to tell a cop that you are armed. Please don't spew profanity laced derogatory misinformation in my direction. I was sleeping in my car in an otherwise empty parking lot because I was too tired to drive when the police officer woke me up and asked me to submit to a sobriety test. As far as I was concerned, it was none of his business that I was packing a pair of pistols. Telling a cop that you have a gun usually just complicates things.

Once when I let a cop know that I was carrying, he held onto my pistols for at least 45 minutes until he was finished verifying that they were legal. That delay caused me to be late for a meeting.

that depends on the state in which you live. they can ask if you have those items on you but they cant do anything to you if you have the right "papers" to own and carry said items
