  • what crack pipe were they smoking when they made this video. Turn off that stupid ass music. Idiots. You cant hear shi.

  • So was crank shaft end play checked? Piston to wall clearance? Ring gap? Main clearances, rod clearances????

  • okay what the fuck is with the music, are people that retarded that they think we want to listen to that shit while somone is explaining

  • Didn't look like them rings got gapped. Ummm

  • nice vid

  • Actually? I thought you were just demonstrating.

  • love dis vid yo

  • My buddy blew his STI motor last weekend. Turns out dealers are scam artists selling crappy sport cars brought up from the states. Beware in Milton, ont

  • Music is annoying change that

  • weres the second part

  • Music is annoying as shit !! This isn't Pr0N !!

  • @dawg1157 sorry I typed your name in wrong. The comment below is the answer to what you asked.

  • @fawg1157

You cant do it that way because it's a horizontally opposed engine so the block splits down the middle to pull the crank shaft out. You wouldn't be able to connect the rods to the crank once the two halves are together.

  • Installing the wrist pins through the block? wouldn't it be a better design to install the wrist pins in the piston/connecting rod, then attaching it to the crankshaft with the end caps (like rebuilding a standard chevy v-6 v-8)

  • Wow...did he really just use gasket maker to adhere the two pieces of the block together? That's UNBELIEVABLE!. Subaru engines FOR THE WIN!

  • part 2???????????

  • Thats their answer to anything" REPLACE WITH 2.5 SHORT BLOCK" fkn shifty cunts

  • gday

  • Aussies are fuckin cool ass people lol id love to live there. especially cause they have 90's WRX's not just standard impreza's like us.

  • Man i wannna rip my subiesss engine out and copyy these guys :D

  • I WANT A SUBIE!!

  • where do u learn to build engines?

  • @sergsrt8 get a degree in mechanical engineering ;)

  • @aryesegal1988 i just watched a video about mechanical engineering and it lookes like science not cars.....lol

  • @sergsrt8 hehe yeah i was kidding, mechanical engineers design engines and cars and rockets and machines and what not... if you're a mechanical engineer, you know how to design engines/cars, so you can absolutely also build them..! ;) if you only wanna learn how to build them and how they work on a basic level, be a car technician or, even better, a mechanical technician, that's perfect for ya... good luck! :)

  • @aryesegal1988 thanks for the help

  • Wonderful video guys! I would really like to see something on Rings, like how to measure clearances and properly file fit the rings!

  • excellent video and info, but the music sucks

  • tutto quello che ho visto era quasi perfetto, ma secondo me perdi tute le note con il maltelo su lo spinote del pistone.

  • Isnt it easier to put the connect the piston to the rod and then put on the block!!??!??

  • @nathanmeitzler It would be easier on almost any other vehicle but the flat 4 makes it impossible to properly tighten the rods to the crank, Thats why there is access holes to insert the wrist pin and clip.

  • Dont you have to retune the fuel injection and ECU to match the bigger engine volume? Can the stock subaru ECU be tuned?

  • @KirkTheGod The Factory ECU can be re-tuned, it is called Flashing, The product I use is the Tactrix cable. They are right around 100 U.S. Dollars and their software and website help are easy to use. You can tune for just about anything, even anti-lag and flat shifting.

  • 4:18...click click says the rod on the cylinder wall....

  • ALUMINIUM HEATS FAST AND COOLS FAST

  • Good vid! but i hate the repetative tone of that engine builder's voice...

  • Does anybody know where to buy an engine rebuild manual? They're prolific for Ford and Chevy motors, but I've never seen one for a Subaru.

  • 5:34 look at the left side of the wall

what the fuck? thats a big ass mark?:S

  • @nohope112 I think its just a line of oil made from the split in the piston ring.

  • @Gauntletbloggs No fucked torque wrench. Calibrated to NIST actually every six months - like the manual specifies. I actually read the fucking manual - try it some time. @thegrimreaper4088 each time you click after the first time - you actually over-torque it. Not a big deal when you're cranking down rod bolts on a shitty old 350 - but it is a big deal if you're building something that will fly.

  • Wow, there is no need to hammer the piston pins in. They will slide right is with not problem ifyou got the piston and rod lined up. That is a good way to damage the piston of rod bushing. I build Subaru engine on a regular basis and rebuild aircraft engines for a living.

  • One click only on the torque wrench (which better be calibrated) - twice and the bolt is over-torqued.

  • @hoppes9

Why would it be over torqued? It wont go past the setting.

  • @hoppes9 Lmao you obviously used a fucked torque wrench, there have always been 2 clicks on every torque wrench i have used. And as thegrimereaper said the torque wrench will not go past the torque setting.

  • Even now, all these years later, I still suffer from A.B.B.A., Australian Broadcasts to Brainwash Americans. I don't even remember how many episodes of Skippy I was exposed to, but does it even matter, now? The point is friends, this crime has not been prosecuted in the Australian courts because there is a wide conspiracy in that land to deny due process for all the American children like myself who were exposed to Skippy, Barrier Reef, and other supposedly "harmless" television shows.

  • its amazing how much power can come from that little engine!

  • your the man of Subaru engines. good work

  • Thank you, Pigioto1. I hope there are more people like you in the world; people who understand the pernicious, wicked nature of early Australian television programming, and who are ready to stand with us in righteous indignation, and protest that atrocity! I stood alone, until your cry of outrage joined mine, and now together we are a force of two. What say you out there, people of strong character and morals? Are you ready to join Pigioto1 and me, in our quest for justice, at long last?

  • Nice video! Congratulations.

  • Man!! This is my dream!!!

  • Skippy, Barrier Reef, Muriel's Wedding, the list goes on. When will people stop fiddling with cars long enough to speak out against this POISON! And by the way, it's quite obvious from this clip that even something as mundane as the placement of a steering mechanism for a car can be deliberately PERVERTED! It's on the wrong side people! Hello? Say what you want about Americans, but at least we know what side of the road to drive on. My God... that was profound.

  • @hummlyhummly wtf? lmao. I think your on some good shit bro

  • haha look at that tiny fucking crank . no wonder subarus engine pile up all the time.

  • subaru engines are known for being very weak, they don't last long and fall apart if you do any tuning. rebuilds are very expensive and imports are usually thrashed and not a good buy in the UK.

they are just so similar to the design of the vw beetle engine

Good demo and work, i like that!

  • Do any of you have any idea how much damage watching Skippy did to me as a young child? Why was that program allowed to be broadcast in America? When will the Australian government apologize for permitting it? We the victims demand reparations! Why has Midnight Oil refused to write a ballad about the thousands of American victims of Australian programming, and Skippy in particular? Stop the silence! My brain is a shrimp on the barbie, for God's sake, what's Australian for lawsuit?

  • @hummlyhummly wat

  • @hummlyhummly m8 stop smoking crack u make no sence what so evea

  • I'm a noob, one question, why didn't he connect the piston to the rod before they assembled the block?

  • @JDMnubi i had that same question, but if you look it seems that that endine is meant to be rebuilt because you can push the pins through the sides of the block at 5:29

  • @ddbikerkid1

yeah I saw that too, what an interesting engine

  • @JDMnubi. With subis Boxer engine its done this way.

  • Wish I could send my Rex across the pond to MRT :(

  • I agree, I cant here shit through that shit music

  • I wish i could rebuild an engine.haha. Kudos on the mr KA beat song

  • no wonder he spun his bearings, hes got one of those cheap under drive pulleys on his engine.

the engine builder also didn't measure the bolt stretch or even cycle the con rod bolts, and was pretty sloppy with the ARP bolt lube (and what builder dosn't have a bottle of ARP lube either?) not what i was expecting for a "performance rebuild"

  • @macthemec what is wrong with underdrive pulleys?

  • @cutandpastestudios

they cause excessive main bearing wear and even spun bearings (like in this engine) because they don't dampen harmonic vibrations like the factory crank pulley.

  • that guy is turkish?

  • what type of hood scoop is he running

  • Brett is the man.

  • Hello, can anyone point me in the right direction for learning more about cars, i tried looking up a few vids for an introductory thing but its all way over my head!

  • @17sundays howautowork . com

  • @17sundays school, go to school thats how i learned how to work on cars

  • @17sundays Buy a ratchet set, pop your hood. Start exploring.

  • @17sundays

I wouldn't recommend going to town on your own car first, your more likeley to cost yourself alot of money and possibly safetey....

get an old lawnmower someone is throwing out and pull it apart, it will give you a good understanding to start with.

  • i melted one of my pistons b4 on my sti racing a evo :(

  • Is that the engine making the funny noise or somebody banging on drums? If it's drums, get rid of them.

  • hiting the wrist pin in is a big no no they should slide in with no force at all and also ther is a bettr method of assmbley were u only need 2 instal 2 pins as he did not all 4.

  • @s12rsx yeah true about bashing in the wrist pins... I also cringed when he levered the crank case apart with a screwdriver

  • That's weird/cool how the pistons are installed.

  • I really like the STI engine but i prefer the room that a Legacy GT Wagon or Forester. Anyone know where i can get accurate info on the best mods to do? I already have a Legacy GT but don't really like the Twin turbo setup...unless there is twin turbo set ups that can give me good go power. pls let me know if any of you can help

  • this isnt twin turbo..

  • didn't say it was mate, I said i have a twin turbo but don't really like twin turbo but looking for advice on ugrades or conversions into single

  • how do you have a twin turbo set-up on a car that comes single turboed..

  • Subaru legacy/lebrity GT's are twin turbo mate

  • @zadoks only the legacy's were twin turbo

  • So, correct me if iam wrong. Subaru has a hole that you have to line the connecting rod, piston and wrist pin??? Why cant you do it normally?

  • b/c it isnt a V shape. You cant access the crank to bolt on the connecting rods

  • I see thanks.

  • Air-con! Noooooooooo bye bye Torque

  • Awful music to complement that awful torque wrench :)

  • Saad!

    Here, no money!

    No money here!

    lol

  • Well torque it up big man!

    I love these guys vids.

So tired of watching ppl be hoons in cars [with exceptions of course]

Much rather watch & learn the science of cars, especially the Suba's!

    Thanks for uploading

    5tars

  • Lose the music!!!!!

  • great info

  • id expect this kind of music on a honda vid

  • is this 2.5l short block the same as the myo4 rs subaru impreza engine which is also 2.5l or is different again?

  • @aussietotheend

No its not. MY04 Rs has open deck and Sti is semi closed deck. The engine of your choice would be EJ255 or EJ257. The short block is identical on both. The only difference is in the heads.

  • SORRY FOR MY UNDERSTANDING BUT WHAT THE TRICK HERE?SOMEONE COULD XPLAINT TO ME;CAUSE I DIDNT UNDERSTAND TAHT FUKIN ACCENT.

so the trick is to change the JDM block for a USDM block that has the particularity to be 2.5 so the JDM block has 2.0 flat?

  • He was just saying it was cheaper to source a 2.5L STI shortblock, than to source a JDM Version 6 STI shortblock (EJ20K). I dissagree, there are cheaper 2.0L alternatives, but i'm not an aussie and prices down there might be different then here in the US.

  • i think he was tryin to say its cheaper to source a new engine than have one rebuilt!

  • @goldsgym1244 yea but a rebuilt is a better chance

  • @goldsgym1244 i think he means you might as well upgrade to a 2.5L rather then just rebuilding the 2.0L.

  • @yuri

0:26 2.5ltr US STI short block is more cost effective but be careful, cause there r 4 or 5 different models of shortblock & depending on where u want to go,has a big effect on the compression ratio, cam timing & eng longevity

1:14 if done internal damage to eng, change oil cooler, cause all the metal bits will come out & do more damage

Used all other existing add-ons of old eng

Oiled all the new components of new block b4 fitting

4:40 Rings easy to snap.Compress rings to get through bore

  • "KA" sucks, so does the rest of the music bed. Great for drowning out potentially good dialog.

  • I completely agree with you. This track adds an otherwise informative clip a really 'cheap' 'teenage riceish' atmosphere.

  • GC8 gearbox suck

  • wow... nice learning video.

    Cheers.

  • Haynes

  • can someone tell me where i can learn basicly EVERYTHING about the boxer engines?

  • ok i just bought a 93 240sx with 183,000miles on it and im just wondering should i rebuild or should i buy a new engine im looking for this to be a drift car and im looking to now what would cost less??

  • depends... do you have an sr20det?

  • yes

  • well you have a good engine, you should just do a rebuild. I would get a new crank though... unless your mechanic says the old one is in good enough shape. At least get it balanced!

  • Thats funny. My friend Adam just bought an S13 body style 240sx. I forgot what year he said it was. very early 90's. He is buying an SR20 for it. If it isnt an SR20 in there already, buy a new one.

  • these engines are easy enough to work on you will need a good workshop manual

  • i dont kno jack squat shit about these types of engines but i dont kno it struck my attention looks interesting and pretty easy or maybe its the video lol

  • "torque it up to specs..."

  • i was wondering how he was going to get the gudgeon pin in with the piston already in the liner...risky business thru tht small hole!!PINGGG!!! i hope it went in alright i had circlip rip my 70kit to shreds

  • how to you get the gudgeon pin out ??

  • u put the piston in down the liner then when it gets so far it will match up wih the hole in the block allowing u to first install the gudgeon pin then the circlip :)

  • thats fuckin horrible

    who invented that motor

  • VW I belive came up with the motor. Its one of the most popular engine out there. Even proche uses a six cylider version of it. One of the most reliable engines out there and it gives more torque than the V equivalint.

  • idiot

  • Chevrolet had its own run of the horizontally oposed motor 1959-1969 with the Corvair. Unfortunately, Chevrolet wasn't at that point willing to put the time and money in to really develop it. It was damn reliable though.

  • how much power did you gain after the engine rebuild?

  • jesus thats a complicated ass engine

  • i gotta do all that. shit....

  • all right we are all expert engine builders fair enough lol but if my engine builder knew as much as this unit. it would be expensive maintenance to say the least. scary

  • oh dear.

Take me to one well known, and knowledgable engine builder that would use a power tool on the block :/

No offence to MRT though, they make some great gear and kits.

  • alot of people use power tools to re build a engine. Stop living in the past man and use power tools

  • mm much safer just to do it by hand.

why are most high end (think merc, bmw etc) hand built.... cause its more reliable and consistent.

  • not true, human is what causes inconsistencies dur de dur homo

  • yeah, bout that... handbuilt supercar engines break more than these do. I personally think its coz when more man hours go into it, they get to jack the price up.

  • i wonder how much it cost for a rebuild?

  • THAT IS NOT THE RIGHT WAY TO BUILD A SUBARU. five years with the Canadian factory rebuilder, and not one was built like that.

  • what is he doing wrong, specifically? I'm a chevy guy, don't know my boxers.

  • if they blew up the bottom end what damage did it do to heads? When splitting the case in half you never pry on the main bearings. the main seal goes in last after checking for crank binding. When lubing the threds the best thing is diff oil. use two bolts in the crank to turn by hand to feel for crank binding. We have a special tool for installing main seal so you don't damage it. pistons in a Subaru are directional one side goes to the front of the motor. He is close on the rebuild, but.

  • Are you sure? looks fairly much right to me

  • He is close

  • fuck stop saying actually!

  • actually i quite like it actually.

  • I don't think any other engine has those piston wrist pin holes right?

  • i got a 2003 subaru wrx and i have a spun bearing is a 2.0L turbo H4 can anyone tell me what type of bearing i need is it the 48mm or the 52 mm please let me know THANKS

  • i seen that one vid of a ej somethin at 1200hp wow

300 hp out of each cyl ridiculous.

makes u wish the tranny wasnt glass

  • yeah jay it only has two pistons and it 10 times faster than a metro, boy those japanese cars got something dont they....geez... i havent got to work on a wrx engine yet, that was interesting seeing how they engineered the block

  • its a boxer engine. It has 4 cylinders, but its horizontally opposed. 2 on each side.

boxer engines are a bitch to work on :(

  • yeah i knew that, subaru and porche traded between porshes boxer motor and subarus awd but ive havent got a chance to work on either yet.. Im sure someone will bring one to the shop, noting to diff in assembly just diff. pretty neat

if you want to talk can you pm me? seems like a lot of people are commenting and this will be hard to find soon, thanks

  • Subaru boxers are actually VERY easy to work on, common misconception. The only time they are harder is when you have to do headwork with the engine in the car, it's easier to lift it out to do that half the time. But otherwise they are VERY easy to work with, I love working on mine.

  • it only has 2 pistons?!

  • it has 2 pistons each side. 2+2 = 4 =)

  • great video.

  • USA USA USA!!! Block EJ257 thought it is built in Japan.

  • USA+++

  • Doesn't that just mean it is our USDM EJ257??

  • yes it does.

  • ty for the vid dude. very insightful. i alwayas wanted to learn how to rebuild.

  • i would love to get a rebuild.... but i wouldnt love the bill at the end

  • @courtsm3 do it by your self

  • @courtsm3 it didnt cost me that much... set me back $1700

  • cool vid, really knowledgeable people.

isnt that an open block deck ?

  • does the bottom end go on these?

  • yes Subaru is having a hard time keeping the bottom end together. they have a hardend crank now,

  • now i wanna go take my engine out and rebuild it

  • man.. i remember when i blew a piston on my wrx.. i had to do all that crap.. it was fun tho.. 1st time donig a suby engine.. and so far 50k miles and running hard.. with no problems.. next time it blows.. i'll pick a 2.5liter..

  • I wanna build a boxer engine now

  • I went with Cosworth big bore heads and Crawford s3l block. I have been suporting 500 at the wheels for about 10 weeks. TALK TO ROCKET RALLY IN BC CANADA. I know that might be a ways away. But the good thing is that they know this setup. CHEERS

  • Listen up people i used to work for Prodrive in the wrc engine department. Let me tell you, you do not want to be rebuilding engines like that, i have heard of MRT but now i know, need any engine work on Subarus then contact me.

  • is rebuilding bad for the engine?

  • no in fact rebuilding an engine makes it better than when it came out the factory

  • Are you sure? I heard that the horsepower drops if you rebuild the engine.

  • its basically restoring trhe engine with the exception of boring the block, which increases the displacement. thefore it has slightly more power than when it came stock.

  • dude, this car is top pick for professional rally car drivers

  • he was on drugs wen he posted dat comment

  • lol k

  • my love for subaru knoes no bounds

    thxs for the vids

  • why did Subaru give us the 2.5 and not japan

  • 2L in Japan would not meet NA emissions

  • I thought, it had to do with insurance, if a car is over 2L and under a specific weight in Japan they tax the hell out out of the manufacture, and WRC homologation.

  • good video very eduxatinal im beggining to forge my engine after watching this video thanks mate
