@ItsWhatever24 it doesnt have a "brand".. literally. i got it off ebay, there a a bunch of sellers that are selling the same thing. i think i paid $30 shipped. if you go to ebay you will find a bunch that look similar to what im using.. theyre all most likely made in china.
Is the crop 1.6 in video mode because of the image stabilisation or does that reduce it even further? Also, did I catch you right when you said you cant touch screen focus in video mode. Is that right yes?
@simon44 in video mode, it crops the top and bottom of the 3:2 sensor to 16:9... its actually about 1.57 crop, but the math is easier with 1.6. when you start recording the video, you cant zoom in by touch or pressing the magnify button (but, peaking still works).
Great video - I'm wondering how would you use a dolly to get a moving shot and manually control the DOF - without it being on a auto settings? Can this be done with a remote control for the Sony NEX 5N - or is the auto focus smart and smooth enough to use when doing a dolly shot?

@MrCameronBinkley depends on the lens and your technique. for me, i can do a good job with a 24mm lens.. but, 50mm gets really shakey. you can also use a tripod or some other complex rig to stabilise it.. probably not worth it for most folks. for video use, i wouldnt use anything more than a 50mm unless you are using a tripod... Sony's 50mm emount lens has IS built into it.
@KyriosIasonas peaking is better than nothing, but, the zoom-in feature is more accurate. its also more reliable/repeatable: e.g. if you took a stationary scene and focused 100 times, 100% of your zoom-in focus photos will be sharp, whereas using the peaking method will be lower.
for video, it doesnt matter too much since its only 2mp, but, with 16 (or 24) mp.. tiny errors are going to be noticeable. youre basically using a 800x480 image to judge the focus of a 16/24mp image.
ah ok i will do that thx,and i also saw your setting 60p use 125 shutter speed right? its ok if i put my manual aperture of the lens on 3.5 or should i try put as close to the f22 or doesn't matter cause im shooting that wide 6.5mm fisheye, its for skateboard!
@rodysk8 im guessing f11 or so should be fine.. at f22 you may not get enough light in. but, just play around with it and see what works. but, if youre using 60p, set the shutter to 1/125 and mess around with the other settings. the 5n has clean video, dont worry about going up to iso3200
so let me ask you,i'm shooting with the opteka 6.5mm fisheye its all manual this lens, and i only have control of the shutter speed it looks like the focus its good i'm setting to infinity do you have any suggestion for this settins? thx
@rodysk8 since its so wide, you can probably just set the focus to 1m or so, and everything will pretty much be in focus.. this way, you can follow your subject. ive never shot with anything that wide, but id imagine it would be good for point of view, or skateboarding.
When I mount a Nikon lens and try to shoot in video mode it gives an error message saying "cannot recognize lens - attach properly". Is there a way to override this, or has Sony deliberately made it impossible to use non-Sony lenses?
@xxgg its holding up fine. the one place it can become loose are the tiny screws holding the aluminum plate to the front of the adapter. all you have to do is check the looseness once in a while. you can do this by gently pulling the lens from the camera.. there should be no movement. in the over 1 year that ive had this adapter, ive had to tighten those screws once.. and that was a while ago. other adapters may be different than this one, but, there is nothing else that can come loose
When I tried out this camera in bestbuy, the exposure compensator kept changing even in manual mode. Is it possible to set the exposure compensator to manual
@Isle0fRed its not actually changing the exposure compensation, in that instance its telling you whether youre over or underexposed based on the metering mode youve chosen. you can just ignore it, or turn on the histogram which will make the ev meter go away.
hello, im in a dilemma as to go for the nikon d5100 or the sony nex 5n ....im upgrading from point and shoot and ive tried my hand at nikon d5000 and nikon d60....wich one would u prefer i went for ?? my late uncle has professional nikon f mount lenses ..so will these nikon lens in use with the nex 5n hinder optimum image quality available with the sensor??
@zythug nowadays, the only SLR i would get is a D7000 or higher, the NEX basically serves 90% of the shooting needs. but, since you seem to have a lot of really nice nikon lenses on hand, i'd get the d5100. the nikon lenses will work on the NEX, but, will probably work better on the nikon body.
keep in mind the d5100 does not have an in-body AF motor, so, if any of those lenses are screw-driven (non-AFS) youre going to need a higher body like a D90 or D7000
@geoharmonic most of the tips here apply to any lens. you can also get relatively cheap older lenses at your local camera shop or ebay.. adapters can be had for $35 shipped.
Nice, informative video(s) on this exciting camera. But how come "focus peaking" is not accurate enough for stills? Isn't that the whole idea with this feature?
@Mikkarl the lcd is 800x480 pixels.. which is far less resolution than the 16mp of an image... for video its fine, but the best approach for stills is to zoom in and focus. its even more difficult if you have a small aperture lens, since more will appear to be "in focus". peaking has been around for a while and was actually designed for video use, for on the fly focusing.. i guess you can use it for stills if youre in a pinch, but, its not ideal where focus accuracy is a priority.
this tips help me alot
thanks buddy

Okay so the body has no IS, does this mean when you are shooting video or taking pictures, it's going to be really shaky?

@JogBird I think you should do a part three as info such as ideal custom button settings would be useful, (even if were only your settings)
