  • this is abviously her. so why in the hell if she played on the original is this one completely different from the original? d

  • OK.. CLEARLY coolsweetgroovy must be related to Carol Kaye, because he/is is hitting up multiple Jamerson threads and slagging him. You know WHY Carol Kaye has gotten dissed by Jamerson fans? Because for years Carol has tried to lay claim to many of his classic performances. It's disrespectful to a man who's been dead for over 25 years and can't defend his legacy. I'll believe the word of the producers and other musicians over her's any day. Enough already .....

  • Hank Cosby who co-wrote, produced it, and who, in his own words, "was there every step of the way from the writing of the song to the day the 45's were shipped", vehemently denied any participation by Carol Kaye on this recording. Cosby added, "Fifty percent of the song was James Jamerson's bass line. No one played like that but Jamerson." Cosby also signed an affidavit similar to Brian Holland's attesting to Jamerson's performance.

    bassland net jamerson

  • Stevie Wonder Was Singing Just Before The Beach Boys

  • The Beach Boys never said you son of a bitch not surprised this is coming from James Jamerson fans

  • Again Carol Kaye gets dissed by fans of James Jamerson P.S. Hey Jamerson fans Leave Carol alone

  • This is a really good cover and Carol Kaye kicked ass on bass P.S. Carol actually played bass on an early cut on the Stevie Wonder orginal but Motown erased her off the track and put Jamerson on instead Damm you Berry Gordy Carol Kaye Bass Legend

  • @coolsweetgroovy they did not erase her. she never played on the original at all. and if they did erase her it was b/c she sucked and jj could give them that motown funk sound

  • @mjjcng8958 That's actually true Damm Berry Gordy is racist

  • @coolsweetgroovy dAMN berry gordy was not a racist have you ever heard of the funk brothers? they had white people in the band. sorry to break it to you but not even the black musicians got credit so it isnt racist

  • @mjjcng8958 Uh yes Berry Gordy is racist the only white person given credit for being one of the Funk brothers is some dude named Bob Babbit

  • @coolsweetgroovy so a racist hires people they hate? you dont know anything about motown history if gordy was such a racist why was rare earth signed to a record deal with motown? why did the motown revue got to england to per form for whites? why was bob babit the replacement foe james jamerson? honeslty you ned to reaccess you definition of a racist

  • @mjjcng8958 Yes I do know about Motown history and Mr. Gordy screwed the acts he had P.S. Rare Earth only had 2 big hits

  • @coolsweetgroovy and it was no ones fault but their's. serioulsy you need to check your definition of racism against the real definition

  • @mjjcng8958 Ok whatever what I meant is that Berry Gordy only is racist because like I said the only white person givencredit for being one of the funk brothers is some dude named Bob Babbit

  • @coolsweetgroovy still not racist. berry gordy had nothing to do with giving credit to any of the funk brothers black or white. if carol kaye ever apart of motown recordings dont you think the producers of the songs she clamed would remember her. if berry gordy was so racist why did he sign teena marie to his record label? honestly think about it

  • @coolsweetgroovy Two bigs hits like "Get Ready", "(I Know I'm) Losing You", "I Just Wanna Celebrate", "Born to Wander", "Big John is My Name"...those two?

  • @coolsweetgroovy oh and by the way he didnt even give the blacks in the funk brother credit either so your point of racism is invalid.

  • @mjjcng8958 Bob Babbit was the only white given credit for playing with the Funk Brothers hello

  • @coolsweetgroovy still invalid.

  • @mjjcng8958 Whatever can we atleast agree this is a good cover and a classic?

  • @coolsweetgroovy it is alright cover>

  • @mjjcng8958 each to their own favs

  • @coolsweetgroovy Joe Messina never received any credit? Nor Dennis Coffey? Nor Jack Brokensha...One should do their homework before making unfounded accusations...

  • @hollidayevery Joe Messina and Dennis Coffey who are they?

  • @hollidayevery Joe and Dennis are other white musicians that received credit and were latter-day Funk Brothers...Someone claimed that Bob Babbit was the only white musician to received label credit from Motown...

  • man i wish i could love this song but the bass is highly missing. that is what holds the song. horrible reindition.

  • Sorry there are some classics that should be re-rcorded and some that shouldn't and this definitely one of them. This must have been their down time when Bryan was trying to get Smile put together while suffering a nervous breakdown..

  • James Jamerson played with one finger on the Stevie Wonder original. Astounding.

Who new Carl Wilson had so much soul...

  • @javernot Do hear the bass going thump thump?(with one finger) no it's Carol Kaye not James Jamerson plus that wouldn't sound right

  • @Constantia1000 This is Soooooooooooo Hippppppppieeeeee!!!!!

  • this song is so awesome.

  • My main criticism of Wild Honey(which I do think is very good) is the overall sound on all the songs. The album isn't very dynamic in it's sound presentation...it's very dull and seems constricted if not uninspired. There is a definite static-ness present that was just another sign of Brian's debilitation.

  • @jwild611 Nah, it wasn't down to that... it was deliberately so. It was meant to be stripped down and simplistic. But to fair, I'd love to hear "Aren't You Glad" with real Brian Wilson production values.

  • @Karateworm "It was meant to be stripped down I didn't say it wasn't. This was also true for Smiley Smile. But with "WIld Honey" the band really needed it to sell well to keep afloat which it didn't quite do. Therefore the static sound production is definitely a factor and like I stated it was just yet an other sign of Brian's meltdown. While peoplenow have learned to value it higher in 1967 the reaction shouldn't of been surprising "theres some nice songs...but from Pet Sounds to this?!?!"

  • @jwild611 LOL!

  • These boys could out sing and out play any band of their time and possibly even now

  • Can I just like both artists, and both versions? Do you really need to pick a side here?

  • Pretty freakin cool version ! But then, I absolutely love this classic song, & I dig The Beach Boys big-time !!

    Thanks for posting.

  • great cover

  • Vocals *shudders* Why are they butchering Stevie, and gives them the wherewithal to think that this cluttered whining mess is 'okay'? Just terrible

And the bass has NOTHING on the deep, supple warm sound of a *real* James Jamerson bassline.

  • I absolutely LOVE Beach Boys from Pet Sounds on. The older stuff is good too, but wow... thier later stuff is way underrated!

  • I'm laying to rest everyone's confusion here (including mine). I asked a friend who works with recording studio equipment to strip this song to the vocals, and yes they do say "I was made to love her." The speedy jumbled delivery of the chorus vocals gives one the unintended aural illusion that they sing "you SOB." But whether you hear the bonafide lyric or the lyric as some folks have incorrectly heard it, it doesn't alter the prideful boast about how the singer feels about his gal.

  • @MrJamesrnolan I had a friend ask me the same thing after I played it for him in the car one day.

  • They may well be singing "you son of a bitch," and I'm not really sure why it's there, or if it really fits, unless it's meant to be a defiant way of stating "This is how I feel about this girl, and if you don't like it, tough." Stevie Wonder never complained about it, so I'm guessing he found it a-ok too. I think both versions are wonderful in their own different ways. Why nitpick? There's room for both. Can't wait for Bob Dylan's version.

  • they're saying:

"hey hey yes I was made to love her".

  • The definitive version of this song is on the boot "Smiley Smile and Wild Honey - Stereo", btw.... considerably longer, even more so than the Rarities one!

  • stevie wonder is better!!

  • @blessthedollar Are you joking? Alright, then stfu and throw on some Stevie Wonder. I don't want to see posts relative to Stevie Overrated Wonder on a Beach Boys vid. I'd much rather see on topic comments, even if they were negative.

  • @TorrinTheGreat stevie wonder overrated?? pff.. stupid...

  • @blessthedollar You just dun goof'd.

  • @TorrinTheGreat overrated my ass.

  • soo funky, yeaaaah

  • I always heard "son of a bitch" as well. Never could figure out why that was in there...Then a friend of mine was singing along and he sang ( and I quote) "Yes I was made to love her"..and I knew that was what they were saying..try it..it fits.

  • i never heard "you son of a bitch" in this song... I'm trying and trying to hear it, but it sounds nothing like that to me!

Am I the only one who can't hear it?

    It's bugging me!!

  • @MissLeigh78 i can't hear it either!

  • @MissLeigh78 just listen to the vocals in the back, not the frontman. ex: 1:24

  • The guys were beginning to record at Brian's home studio at this time....along with the album "Friends" ...."Sunflower" later and were playing most of the stuff ...not using the studio musicians, probably based on financial reasons as much as anything. It was expensive to rent the old studio crowd....the sound that comes from these albums is totally different....not as "slick"...much more raw...as in actually recording it themelves...without just doing the vocals over the studio players sound.

  • Wild honey! One of my fave Beach Boys albums! Brilliant! Anyone noticed the bass drop out for a beat @1:11?

  • @dominiccarter77 Great ear! What's that about?

  • youre right he still hitting those high notes

  • lol when He tried to sing like stevie on the line "my mama boo hood it" It made me chuckle

  • You can't beat the Beach Boys saying "You son of a bitch." With Brian's and (others in the groups) bizarre sense of humor, I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional.

  • not keen on this redition, strained vocals from Carl, rushed album is the reason why

  • carl does that strained vocal a lot, and i really don't like it.

  • I love it!

  • happy birthday dennis wilson

  • i wish james jamerson was still alive...thats all i can say

  • Im loving this song. I like the way he's singing on here, he's just letting his heart and soul out.

  • The Beach Boys mostly played their own instruments on this album, barring horns, etc. The bass should be played by Brian, or Bruce, or Carl or Al, probably Brian or Bruce, probably not Carol Kaye. Hal Blaine was listed as present for this session, tho' the drums could be Dennis on this one (you can hear him on "Darlin'"). Carl tears it up on this. I would love to hear a live version, where he cut loose even more.

  • I don't think Brian played bass on this. He was more at piano for the album.

  • I recently read in my Beach Boys encylopaedia that Ray or Roy Brown was listed as, or did, play some bass on Wild Honey album, possibly this track. Also, Hal Blaine is listed as present for this song, tho' most historians agree it's Dennis on Darlin', and there's little reason it couldn't be him on this one. Bruce sometimes played bass, and Carl was multi-faceted. But this album was meant to be their back to basics job, where they played the main instruments as a self-contained rock/pop unit.

  • Comment removed

  • the vocal's a bit rough, but i've always loved this version. And i too thought they were saying "you son of a bitch you love her"! thanks for posting.

  • Carol Kaye holds her own on the Beach Boys cover, but she can't touch James Jamerson, Bass Legend.

  • @coldfiretc Who could?

  • @coldfiretc It's all for the love of music, no need to compare. Each contributed in their own way.

  • he tryin but this cant touch Stevie's Version

  • But he's trying to do his own version. There's a sort of vulnerability about this version. He's singing at his 'break' but nevertheless he's still going for those high notes. Different.

  • Did Carol Kaye play bass on this?

  • @Ariamaluum Yes and on the orginal

  • what a weird freakin cover...valiant attempt by them, but they get exposed vocally singing this...this kinda sounds like the beach boys impersonating the rolling stones doing stevie wonder...i dont know about this one

  • For some reason I thought the lyrics were "You son a bitch, I was made to love her" I had to listen closely and it said "you said I was made to love you. You son of a bitch would have made a better lyric lol.

  • actually the lyrics are "yes i was made to love her"

  • I too thought they were saying "you son of a bitch". I love the song. Both this version and Steve Wonder's.

btw sometimes mischievous background singers actually do um, "improvise".

  • Beach Boys Soul...:D
