at that size you got to tow in and still if you don't have a jet ski rescue and you fall in front of a 54-5 wave set you could easily drown. easily.

nothing worse than getting held down without a good breath and then finally making it up for air only to get a lung full of foam and get held down again. if you live you are done for the day.

like snow skiing, sometimes that last wave of the day is a mistake. you are already tired and even tho your mind says one more but your body is whipped dog.

the hold down is rarely ever longer than 15-30 seconds. but when you are being thrashed by something that powerful, you tend to use up a lot of oxygen, so it seems like two minutes. the thing that is the scariest though, is if you arent up to the surface fast enough the next wave holds you down again. etc.etc.

I got news for you brah. At Mavs on days like this 40 second hold downs are definitely in the cards - maybe even longer. Check Powerlines Neal "Moose" Matthies and time it. I did. On Freaks Friday El Nino early 1998, Matthies was held down from the outer peak almost all the way to Sail Rock. And if hadn't had a leash to climb, he probably would have drowned or been stuffed into a cave.
