@ThePinkFloydPig This is the only electric guitar I have but it stays tune better than my martin acoustic and offbrand acoustic. I tune it a lot more tfrom changning environments than it just nauturally doing out of tune from play.
That sounds wicked. Looking for a guitar up to about 400 quid and this one is standing way above the rest in the running at the moment. Plus it's a gibson and that can only be a good thing:P Can anyone suggest any better guitars up to £400 in cost?
I tried one in a store through a VOX ac15cc and it KILLED every guitar in the store with that amp.
Thin Mahogany, mahogany & rosewood neck and thin nitrocellulose(LOVE the finnish) gave it warmth and tons of bloom(sponginess, chunkiness, whatever you call it)and pickup was punchy, balnced and clear as a bell.
I normally hate ceramic pups but in that guitar it sounded super sweet and clear, nice punch too.
My AC15 has an alnico Red Fang and will sound even smoother than store amp.
For a cleaner sound, get the Melody maker. The Epiphone is a damn good guitar, but the MM is made by Gibson so it will be more durable and have a longer life. MM's are great for a clean sound.
My grandpa's giving me a 1971 (I think) Gibson Melody Maker with double cutaway and double pickups. It needs repair but it used to be in a old hippy band with psychedelic paint on it, which was taken off. Sweet video BTW.
Absolutely yes. Got mahogany body and neck (not cheaper wood quality), handbuilt at nashville, just with poor finishing, but nitro painted ecc... There's no comparison in terms of quality but they're 2 completely different sounding type guitars. If you want this guitar only because you want a les paul style guitar with the gibson name on the headstock don't buy it...it's just ridiculous. If you dig the sound you deserve to play it.
i think mm got a great bluesy sound and still preety good distorcioned. i just ask it because they cost the same, and i think that epiphone lp standard costs even more than the mm. so you think i should buy mm?
In MY opinion, absolutely yes. But again it's a matter of taste, personally I prefer single coils, and the one on the melody maker is awesome, I like it more than the p90 mountend on the older versions. On the other hand there's no doubt that the epiphone has less quality in construction, woods, hardware etc even if they're priced more than the m.m....Now is up to you and your ears;)
I just added a MM to my collection, I got it new for 250.00. I run it through a Blues Junior with a Tube Screamer. I keep the tone control all the way off.
Lemme tell you all, swap that pickup out for a humbucking single-coil of your choosing, it will scream.
You'd also think those tuners would stink. Oddly, for being near-original spec vintage, they hold tune even after some shred. Much better than die-cast and a lot of non-locking tuners that I've jammed on.
I'm not a troll, man, but I just thought I'd let ya know.
for the ones who asked if MM is good for punk or metal: I wouldn't reccomand for metal, but i think it rawks for punk-garage rock n roll.
Green Day's Billie Joe uses a Les Paul Junior, that must be better, but very similar to a MM and it sounds nice, you can hear in songs like Church on Sunday,Blood Sex and Booze,Waiting...
A lot of bands into punk-garage uses that...like detroit cobras, joan jettes...a lot ehehe
I think that they were both low-budget, entry-level guitars. I'm actually not quite sure Gibson introduced the Melody Maker after the Les Paul Jr., they seem really similar: lightweight body, one single-coil pickup (although I think the jr had a P90 and the MM something unique). Actually, looking at the dates, the MM was introduced about the time they seem to have been phasing out the Jr. So original Juniors are from the 50s, MM from the 60s (ish).
I'm going for the Melody Maker, but that's partially because my favorite band is the Libertines and Doherty's Epiphone Coronet is fuck-off expensive, not to mention rare.
you should look into gettin a gibson coronet their very expensive but they have a better 'twang' then any tele ive ever played and the trebble you can get on them is truelly amazing specially for what was suppose to be an entry level guitar about 40 years ago
Depends. I know the original 1959 Melody Maker is Carl Barat's favorite guitar; so if you're into punk (be it the Clash or the Libertines), then this might be for you. "Hard rock", though, I'm not so sure about.

There was an interview with carl and the other bloke about their sound and equipment in guitar &bass about a year ago though the article might be on the guitar & bass site, it was really interesting and worth a read.
I have an SG and a Melody Maker....the SG is nearly twice as heavy as the Melody maker.
I have a narrow leather jazz strap for the Melody Maker and it never bothers my shoulder. It's one of the lightest solid mahogany guitars that I've played.
Great guitar. They are great clean and great dirty. Warm little guitar.....a keeper.
Hi, I am about to buy the Melody Maker. But i am wondering.. How much does it weigh? I mean, I cant find anywhere online that tells me what the weight of it is. Do you know? And as far as quality, Would you recomend the Melody Maker?
i was looking at one in the shop 2day, they are nice, they are no performance guitar really tho, they are very light and are good for like solo or group jamming, i'm thinking of getting one, and for 200euros u can't really go wrong
